I know exactly what you mean. And it's terrible. Why do so many people in the profession think that means the end to all fun?

I got into the profession because it was fun, and exciting, and damn satisfying to make something out of nothing or discover something new. If you're not happy as a scientist, then hey, go do what actually makes you happy, you know? My mother was a Science major who switched to Art mid-college and was a helleva lot happier for it.
