THE ALPHA/BETA/OMEGA MEME


In our world, sexual roles are commonly defined by genders -- male or female or other, by sexualities -- gay or straight, bi or asexual or in-between. But what if they were defined by something else entirely? 

Alpha/Beta/Omegaverse is a fusion of fanfiction tropes and animalistic behavior. In this world, sexual roles are divided into three categories: the Alphas (the dominant, the protective and the aggressive), the Betas (ordinary humans) and the Omegas (submissive, fertile and able to carry children).

CONTENT WARNING: Below the cut contains descriptions of animalistic sexual behavior as applied to humans, situations of dubious consent, explicit situations, mpreg, and scenarios of societal oppression. Click with caution! 

ROLES: 
1 - The Alpha.
* Stereotypically type A personalities.
* Anatomically: Males have a penis; females may have a penis in addition to a vagina.
* Alphas knot their mates, meaning that the base of the penis swells and locks them inside their mate while they produce copious amounts of semen in an effort to breed. 
* Strong sense of smell.
* Near an Omega in heat, they experience a compulsion to mate that is almost impossible to overcome.
* Alphas may go into rut, which is their equivalent of Omega heat, and drives them to mate. 

2 - The Beta. 
* Ordinary human being.
* Males have penises; females have vaginas. 
* Can mate to anyone. 
* Might be able to smell hormones of Omegas and Alphas, but will not be overwhelmingly affected by them. 

3 - The Omega. 
* Stereotypically submissive, quiet, intelligent and less physically able.
* Female anatomy is similar to Betas; males are self-lubricating and may have either an external or internal vaginal setup. 
* Regularly go into heat, which involves being overcome by the urge to mate. They are unable to consent while in heat. 
* May be made compliant by a bite to the neck. However, that may also induce a mating bond. 
* Often regarded as second-class citizens or prizes to be won. 

SITUATIONS: 
1 - Bonding - Love at first sight. You've spotted your soulmate. You can smell them, you can feel them, you know that they'll be with you until the end of your days. Unless there's something between the two of you. It could be age - maybe one of you has to wait until the other has reached maturity. It could be that the bond is one-sided, and the other has yet to fall in love. It could be an unwanted bond, or society could have divided you into different places. Is your love strong enough to conquer? 

2 - Heat/Rut - The need is coming on you strong. Everyone for a half-mile around can smell it. Better find someone to ride it out with, or hole yourself up in a room with a few bottles of water and a durable sex toy. And you'd better hope that there isn't someone out there who will take advantage of your pliable state. Best case scenario, there might be a Beta who can take care of you, or fend off anyone too predatory. 

3 - Pregnancy - Whether through a heat or not, you're pregnant. Congratulations - or condolences. Is it time to start a family, or time to start panicking? 

4 - Suppressants - You're using suppressants to keep yourself on an even hormone cycle, skipping heats, or maybe pretending to pass as a different class of society. After all, Omegas might want to be in the military, where they're not usually allowed - or an Alpha might want to take a job in a university or as a nurse. Shouldn't they be allowed to, if their hormones are suppressed? Just hope that you don't miss a dose. 

5 - Mistaken Identity - That friend that you always thought was an Alpha, or an Omega, or a neutral Beta, turns out to be something entirely different, and your world is turned absolutely upside down. Does it challenge your preconceptions? Or does it just ruin the balance between you two? 

6 - Unlikely Pairs - After all, there's no actual reason that Alphas have to mate with Omegas. Maybe two Omegas can satisfy each other. Or two Alphas. Or your intended mate could easily be a Beta. Maybe this is just about breaking out of your pre-established role and becoming something new.

7 - Manifestation - In some cases, an individual may not know they are Omega, Beta or Alpha until their first heat/rut/manifestation, usually happening in early teen years. It may take you by surprise; it may be a blessing, or may be a deep disappointment.

8 - Other - Adventures in getting jobs, making families, fighting bad guys, and anything else you can come up with!

Not a single second left to chance, all the bells and whistles of a well-tuned machine being implemented. Key-card to key card, passed down to paperwork, passed down to a flurry of iron keys that seemed to diminish in sophistication the deeper they unlocked.]

[Because they had plans. They being an obscure reference - switching hands as time passed, nameless faces shifting every few years or so and he had lost track. His own craving silenced just as cold as the blades that held him. Four points to keep him steady, chains to bind. Services exchanged to wipe the slate clean and oh, could he appreciate the avarice of it all. The mortal lot far too keen to deny it, but there it was. Staring him right in the face, the ghost of awe and fear lining thick glass with thicker rims.]

Oh-? Was beginning to think you'd forgotten about me.

[His smile crept upwards. Slowly slicing, lips a bit too cracked. Marred by disuse and he slapped them together. Tested the spit that came as soon as he was rattled awake. Last door closing and locking behind the trio and the Sin tilted his head just so. Stealing a glance.] It's been a while, but I guess things haven't changed that much.

[They never said anything to him, never coaxed the words. As if they were fearful of what they may bring. Or they simple found no need. Either way, he was glad to find the floor again. Cross of his lowered by the crank of an old wheel, noise loud enough to echo through a few floors at least. A proper greeting - the announcement a bad omen all on its own.]

[They always needed three; three to hold separate links of chain. Wrists pressed behind his back, iron clenched around his throat, and two shackles to the ankles to make him Marley's own ghost. Ushered up stone steps that turned to wood, that turned to marble, and finally modernization. Pills held out and he took them, swallowed them down with a lashing of the tongue. Nothing left to chance, venom spitting when shields were down.]

[But they stopped in a stark-white hallway. Medical in nature, the sterile smell making him wrinkle his nose. Not his favorite flavor, but beggars really couldn't be choosers.]

[The first thing Julian realized upon waking was that he felt absolutely terrible. His guts felt like the were rebelling and trying to wrench themselves free of his body without much care as to what was in the way. He shifted uncomfortably, a groan rising out of him as lances of pain shot through his lower abdomen--cut off when he further became aware of two things.

First, he was completely naked.

Second, he was chained to the wall by both wrists, which seemed a bit redundant with the active force field stretched across the open gap before him--he wasn't going anywhere. Gingerly, he stretched to the limit of the chain, testing it--far too strong for him to break, even on his best day, and barely enough for him to stand hunched over and move more than a foot or two away from the wall. Obviously someone didn't want him going anywhere--for what reason he wasn't even going to begin to guess.

Garak had been with him on the runabout, and Julian sat up (just enough give in the chain to do that comfortably, he noted) to try to locate him, eyes roving over the rough stone walls of the cell--natural stone, which explained the chill in the air. They had to be in one of the cavern systems their scans had detected. The space, at least, was fairly wide open, he hoped that if Garak was indeed in here with him there wouldn't be any attacks of claustrophobia to deal with--it was awkward enough being here without a stitch of clothing. But the tailor wasn't anywhere in sight.

Julian breathed in deeply through his nose, trying to push through the pain he was feeling to determine exactly what was wrong--no visible injuries, he couldn't rule out poisons, infectious agents, or even just an adverse reaction to the sedatives he'd presumably been given, if his addled brains were any indication. He took another breath, then--he stopped short. The smell permeating the room was familiar; something he usually equated with Bajorans and their peculiar reproductive biology, a smell he wouldn't be able to detect if it wasn't for his enhanced senses. He almost hadn't recognized it, mixed as it was with his own scent, but now that he'd caught it he wouldn't be able to mistake it for anything else.

Omega pheromones. Not the smell of a Bajoran Omega mixed in with his own human scent--this was nothing but him.

Suddenly the roiling in his stomach worsened, anxiety threading in with whatever was done to him, combined with the slow burn of what, he presumed, was the beginning of a heat--he didn't recognize the sensation from the inside, he'd certainly never expected to experience it. Humans didn't share this particular biological imperative with Bajorans...

...and, he realized as the force field cutting the room in half fell--Cardassians.]

Jane was a Beta. Simple, ordinary, and flexible. So, she had a deal with Sherlock Holmes to take care of his needs for when he went into heat. They were friends, and it wasn't that much of a bother to to step in and lend him a hand, so to speak.

She got the text, and was on her way within a rather efficient hour, with plenty of time for a shower and fresh clothes, and a bag packed for as long as he needed. Sometimes it was a day, other times, a weekend. Jane planned on a weekend, just to be on the safe side, and in case he felt good enough to do the usual things. She never knew if she was going to be dragged along on a case even while he was in one of his moods.
