[ probably not very surprisingly, it's difficult to talk over cadavers. more often than not, that's when they stumble across each other: at work, she as a morgue technician and he as a D.I. it gets a bit... you know, a bit awkward, trying to get to know someone over a corpse. so eventually, on Greg's invitation (sometime after Christmas when he asks her first), they manage to find themselves at coffee. before shifts, after shifts, mid-shifts.

she's careful. she's a careful person, most of the time. not frivolous, not too quick to act. careful. makes sure she's got ground to stand on before she actually stands up. so there's a lot of coffee involved in getting to know Greg Lestrade a little better than she does. and it turns out - it turns out Greg's interesting. he's really interesting, actually. he's good to be around, he's a kind man, he's got far too much stress to deal with but he deals with it brilliantly despite the sort of home he's got to go back to, he cares deeply for people worth his care even though his work shows him all the different ways people don't care for each other on a daily basis, and he shows it in his own quiet ways. he's playful, he's fun... and Molly's got all this just from coffee. just from talking over coffee.

today, they've done their usual. Greg's in the middle of a shift, excused himself for a coffee break because it's a slow day and he deserves one, and Molly's got half an hour until she starts. they've had their coffee, their chat (he's a good friend, really, good conversation, good to while away time with regardless of the topic), and they're about to go on their way. he's about to say goodbye, and she's stood there under her umbrella ready to wander off— except she doesn't want to go. suddenly, she doesn't want to go just yet. something's different today, just that little bit different, and Molly thinks... well, she thinks she wants for once to just follow an impulse.

lips paused around a goodbye, eyes flitting back and forth over Greg's face (double-checking: is this okay? can I...? should I?), a hand grabs out without her really registering it to wrap into his scarf, keep him here and steady. a beat, a beat more, standing there and staring at him— and then she surges, caution thrown to the wind in favour of just going for it and stretching to press a swift, chaste kiss right onto his lips.

... and then she realises what she's doing. oh. oh no. immediately she's letting him go, setting herself back onto her feet and brushing herself down, looking just about everywhere but at him. ]

Sorry. Uhm— I'll. That - sorry. I'll... I'll see you. Have a good day.

[ and - and starting to turn to go because all of a sudden she's made that jump from Sensible, Together Molly Hooper to a slightly startled, flustered thing and she's not entirely sure she knows what to do with it or what he's going to think of it oh no oh no oh no. abort. ]

that's ok! Sorry for my delay, too. Molly is adorable.

[Lestrade had always been fond of Molly, but when they had initially met, he had still been married. Of course, it had been a failing marriage, but marriage nonetheless, and his wife was the cheater - not him. He had tried to deny the fact his marriage was failing for a while, even while Sherlock deduced at every corner just how much Greg's wife was being unfaithful. Greg ignored the annoying consulting detective, mostly because he didn't want to believe the younger man was right. But eventually, he did give in to the inevitable, and he and his wife separated. The flirtation between himself and Molly grew, and even if talking over cadavers was a bit awkward, he didn't mind so much. Once the divorce had officially gone through, he felt more confident about finally asking her out on that first date.

Much like John, Greg always hated how cruel and indifferent Sherlock was to Molly. He also never did like the way Molly was just so attracted to the dark-haired man, whom he'd practically known since he was a scrawny kid, underfed and clearly high as a kite, commenting on that very first crime scene. It was that Christmas party, too, where Greg knew he wanted Molly to pay more attention to him than Sherlock. It was painfully obvious Sherlock would never be interested in Molly that way, anyway - Greg wasn't completely sure Sherlock thought that way about anyone, really.

He's actually going to ask her on a proper date soon, instead of these little meetings for coffee, which don't exactly count, anyway. They don't always talk about important things, but he likes talking about things other than work, even if it's just her cat Toby - especially that, because quite simply, she's cute when she talks about things that matter to her so much.

Greg knows this is about the time where they'll say goodbye and part ways, and it's not that he hasn't been wanting to kiss her, because he really, really has. Honestly, he wanted to kiss her when he saw that dress she wore to Sherlock's party, even if it was worn mostly just to impress the consulting detective. For a second, he's confused what Molly might be doing, until her hand grabs his scarf. His mind is still a bit slow to catch up until suddenly, finally her lips touch his, too quick, and too fast before it's over.

He registers her speaking and trying to get away, but he acts, too, before really registering what he's doing. Greg grabs her arm to stop her from going, turning her back to him, and unaware of the little, goofy smile on his slightly grizzled face, he makes his own move. Greg pulls her in, and dips down a little to swoop in for a proper kiss.]

[ oh. oh. that's....

oh.

it takes a few seconds to register, register the difference between scurrying away and staying very still, held in warm arms, close to someone, close to... Greg's kissing her. properly, properly kissing her. once she recognises it, realises what's going on, realises that this is absolutely definitely happening the tension of confusion falters and eases into contentment. Molly melts, eases in, lights up and presses herself closer.

she doesn't know how long it lasts and doesn't rightly mind, either. it lasts longer, that much she knows, and longer is good. definitely good. she's comfortable here, swept up in a whirlwind of humming white noise and safety, so when it does finally runs its course and they part (not too much, Molly happy to pull back just enough to give her space to speak, to give Greg space not to need to strain) her lips are instantly tweaking up at the corners, dazed and dizzy. ]

I—

[ she pauses, swallows down the giddy hitch that shifts the octave of her voice. when she tries again it's clear, determined, nowhere near the timid quiver of her getaway speech. ]

I think I've been wanting to do that with you for a while. Thank you.

[ a glance up at him, smile stretching, full and bright. mutual, then. mutual. good. better than good actually. brilliant. ]
