[If Phil had wanted the legend, Steve wouldn't have been here. He was a good man -or tried to be- but he really was just a guy. Any pedestal he was put on that didn't recognize that, he was destined to fall off. He cursed like a sailor. He had a(n admittedly carefully controlled) temper. He was impulsive. He was stubborn. He didn't follow orders well. He had ghosts and demons and issues.

He was very definitely human and that it was the person that Phil wanted was a relief that... didn't even come close to his relief that Phil was still alive, but still let him breathe, relax, and jut be. That Phil was a strangely calming and balancing influence was even better. It was why he was in a cabin surrounded by snow and cold and okay. Why he was relaxed back on the couch, rubbing small circles on Phil's ankle with his thumb, teasing and smiling.]

It's up to you. We made it here. If you want to spend the entire week reading, I'm not going to complain. [Much. Maybe.]

[Phil had learned to be the calming effect. So many people he worked with were damaged in some way, that he had learned very quickly to work through the pieces of them, and help make them work. He didn't seek to fix, never seeing them as broken...but they needed support.

When it had just been him, Clint, and Natasha, it had been difficult enough; with the team expanded, it sometimes seemed daunting. But he did what he could, to be the hand on a shoulder, squeezing, or more often the voice in an ear piece, voice cool and in control, walking them through the mission.

It was only with Steve that he actually was able to relax, to let some of that facade fall away. They were both products of expectations, and ideals.

So if they could help each other navigate the world, and find each other simply as two men...then for all the better.

Flexing his foot as Steve moved his hand, he let the smile spread just a bit more.]

I didn't rearrange our entire schedules so that we could find time alone...and then use it only for reading.

[Then they were doing just about perfectly, from where Steve was sitting.

He slipped his fingers a bit under Phil's pants and scratched, lightly.]

I won't pretend to be disappointed by that. Put the book down and come here properly, then. Before I pick you up and carry you where I want you.

[Mostly, mostly teasing. Possible, but not likely without better cause, really.]

[Phil barely managed to cover up the sigh of pleasure at Steve's hands on his leg with a false huff of consternation as he leaned to place the book on the coffee table.

He gave Steve an even look, even as he moved to shift his body.]

For the record, threats don't work on me. They usually make me very chose exactly the opposite of what you wanted.

[He smiled; Steve well knew that, as it was. Going to sit next to the other man, Phil knew that they would adjust themselves accordingly soon enough, an easy negotiation of limbs.]

I just happen to take what you said as a request.

[And he took the opportunity then to lean in, pressing lips to matching pair.]
