The Pacific Rim Meme



We always thought alien life would come from the stars. But it came from deep beneath the sea, a portal between dimensions in the Pacific Ocean. Something out there had discovered us. The first Kaiju made landfall in San Francisco. The second attack hit Manilla. Then the third one hit Cabo. Then we learned this was not going to stop. In order to fight monsters, we created monsters of our own. We needed a new weapon. The Jaeger Program was born. Two pilots, our minds, our memories, we were connected. Man and machine became one.

In the near future, giant monsters identified as "Kaiju" have begun attacking Earth's coastal cities, resulting in a war that takes millions of lives and quickly consumes humanity's resources. To combat the monsters, a special type of weapon is designed: massive robots, known as Jaegers. The Jaegers are controlled simultaneously by two pilots who are bound together in a process called Drifting, creating a neural link between their minds. The link lets them share the mental strain which would otherwise overwhelm a single pilot. The Jaegers are the last, best hope for humanity's survival.

Instructions:
1.Choose a role (or multiple roles!) and post with your character/fandom.
2. Others will post to you with a scenario.
3. All Jaeger names must made up of two words that have little to do with each other. This is mandatory.
4. Go big or go extinct. Or just have fun, that works too.

Roles:

1. Jaeger Pilot: The rock stars of the kaiju wars. You and your partner may be siblings, spouses, parent and child, or just two people who have the trust and compatability necessary for a successful Drift. Get out there and kick some ass.

2. Engineer: The war against the kaiju isn't just fought by the pilots. You're one of the countless support staff that design, repair, and enhance the Jaegers for maximum kaiju-smashing potential.

3. Scientist: Biologist, physicist, kaiju groupie. You study these horrific monsters so you can figure out how to destroy them...or you just really have a thing for alien anatomy.

4. Mission Control: Off the front lines but not out of the battle. You're watching the monitors, dealing out the orders, and generally making sure your Jaeger pilots don't do anything more stupid than normal.

5. Civilian: A black market dealer in kaiju organs, a reporter trying to get a (literally) big scoop, or just some poor schmuck trying not to get stepped on. You're one of the folks that the Jaegers are fighting for.

6. Other: Go wild.

Scenarios:

1. Preparations: Dealing with kaiju is a process, not a moment. Pilots need to physically and mentally hone their strength, engineers need to perfect the Jaeger weaponry and armor, scientists need to run their experiments, and black market dealers need to make their money.

2. First Neural Handshake: It's time to Drift with your partner. You'll experience each others' most painful secrets, joyous memories, and the time you got drunk and made out with the captain of the football team. Hang on, it'll be a bumpy ride.

3. Downtime: Chill out, have a beer, pretend the world isn't ending. You can explore the thriving towns that have grown up amongst the kaiju remains or just stay in the Shatterdome doing combat practice. However you relax, you've earned it.

4. Kaiju Detected: Battle stations, folks. Get to your cockpit, your command post, or your underground bunker. The monsters are coming, and they ain't gonna stop until someone does something about them.

5. Combat Mode: It's go time! You're in the heat of things, punching these otherworldly abominations in the face with your awesome. Remember to call your attacks; it makes them more powerful if you shout their names first.

5. Aftermath: Job well done, folks. Sit back, enjoy the celebrations, put another tick mark on your kill count...and if necessary, mourn the dead.

6. Other: Go further wild.

That man was just too easily distracting and no matter if she rolled onto her side or stomach he seemed to be right there, asking questions more or less just trying to annoy the hell out of her. [Perhaps it's not very patriotic of Hercules to have an American pin-up painted on the side of his plane, but he doesn't give one flying fuck. He challenges anyone who sees Miss Gipsy Danger to have a problem with his choice of namesake for his plane. She's beautiful, everything he could possibly want, and every time he climbs into her cockpit, he feels invincible.

What, you thought he was talking about the dancer?

No. Hercules' love affair is with his plane and nobody else, ever since the Japs came and bombed his town, killing his wife and very nearly killing his son. He's got the kind of single-minded bullheaded determination that Australians are famous for, and all his considerable focus on honed on one thing: avenging his family and hopefully killing those bastards who murdered half his town.

Though he supposes he can take a break for a night; his unit is being housed with some Yanks at the moment, and the USO has prepared quite a show for their soldiers. Apparently Miss Gipsy Danger has agreed to make the trek out into enemy territory in order to entertain her brave American boys, oh, and those Aussies who're tagging along. Herc figures it would be unsporting of him to miss the show, especially since Miss Danger is the namesake for his beloved baby. (That's his story and he's sticking to it; Hercules is not about to say he engineered their current posting just for the chance to see his favorite burlesque dancer perform in person. That would be ridiculous, not to mention a misuse of Air Force resources.)

It's really pure chance that he finds himself in the front row, right in front of the low stage that got set up, despite the fact that the rest of his unit is somewhere towards the back. He absolutely didn't bribe anyone to get their seat. No sir. He would never do that.]

[Training to work on the Jaegers in some capacity was always part of their training in the Jaeger Academy. Fail to pass one level, don't worry; you'll still have a job somewhere in the PPDC doing something to help the program. He never failed, though. For a few years after making the final cut, he didn't have to even think about what else he'd do except pilot a Jaeger, though he'd excelled in other areas of their training. He and his partner, Connie, piloted a Mark III named Epsilon Pulse all up and down the eastern coast of the Pacific Ocean. And they were good. Not...the best, but they were good. Always came back in one piece.

That is, until something happened. His breakdown is somewhat infamous in the PPDC, as no one else has seized up like that in the middle of a fight with a kaiju before. Had they been the only team deployed, both Connie and him would've died and Tacoma, Washington would've been destroyed. Thankfully, that isn't the case. Tacoma still stands and Connie's still alive--but she and him are no longer co-pilots.

Some people think he should have been let go altogether and sent to a psych ward somewhere in-land, but even six months after the incident, the kaiju are still getting tougher, and the Jaegers are starting to go down. And he happens to be a very skilled weapon technician. It only makes sense that they bring him back--just not in the same role as before. He always did weapon tune-ups with the other crew members and had been in the process of designing a new weapon for Epsilon Pulse when the incident occurred. And now, since he's been reassigned to his old Jaeger, he can finally implement it.

Entering the LA Shatterdome again after so long goes just as he expects: there are tons of people bustling from here to there, and every now and then, he'll get a look from a passing crew member or technician. It doesn't take one of the eggheads from K-Science to figure out why. And honestly, he doesn't pay them any mind; nor does he care what they think. He's done with being a Jaeger pilot and he's perfectly fine with that. Having one other person inside his head is just enough to last him a lifetime. He doesn't need anyone else filling that void.

Soon enough, he's made his way over to Epsilon Pulse's bay, and shifts a heavy satchel filled with a datapad and many of his own personal tools and equipment on his back as he looks around. He recognizes most of the pit crew, having worked with them for some time, but there are some new faces as well. It's to be expected as the Academy has a tendency of turning out PPDC personnel than pilots. Wanting to waste no time, he calls to the nearest person--he doesn't recognize her from behind--as he starts removing his bag.]

Hey, do you know if there's a spare locker in the crew area where I can put my stuff? It's been a while since I've been down this way.

[A Jaeger-filled world must, by definition, include Jaeger groupies. Andrew Carter's never been in the running for pilot candidacy, but he's okay with that. His real dream has been to work on the giant robots themselves, elegantly crafting more powerful weaponry and stronger armor. He has promotional pictures of Striker Eureka and Crimson Typhoon on the inside of his locker where other people have pin-ups, and he's memorized the stats of every Jaeger currently or formerly in existence. One of his most precious possessions is a chunk of helmet armor that was taken off Tacit Ronin during repairs. You want a chain sword that shoots lasers? Carter will find a way to make a chain sword that shoots lasers.]

[No, he's not a baby kaiju. Or a half-breed kaiju. Or a mutant. He's a perfectly reasonable scientist who happens to have an unusual look to him for reasons completely devoid of kaiju matters and he'd be very grateful if you'd stop asking awkward questions so he can go back to his work. Abe's used to the stares by now and shaming people into silence seems to be the best way to get a little peace...that or telling them that his condition also renders him resistant to the horrific effects of Kaiju Blue.]

[Riley's been part of the Orion Bravo pit-crew for a few months now, most often helping the pilots get in and out of their armor and working with LOCCENT during calibrations and upgrades. Between Kaiju she makes sure armor is in working order as well, unable to do some of the tougher jobs with the jaeger itself. During the initial attack in San Francisco she'd been lucky to escape with her life, but she'd lost her family and a leg in the process. The missing limb limited some of the work she could do, but she was damn happy just to be able to contribute to the cause at all. She wasn't the only one on the crew motivated by lost family to work their hardest, and that common cause bound them together as close as the mothers, fathers, siblings and other relatives they'd had to drag from the rubble of their destroyed towns.

Some of them considered the pilots part of that family as well, protectors of those still in need of defense. They had fame for what they did, but the support and loyalty of those who served with them. Riley got along well with Mikaela most of all. What age difference there was between them didn't matter when it came to chatting in the mess hall during meals or heading out during off-time to unwind for a few hours.

As soon as Orion Bravo is back in the Shatterdome, Riley heads into the cockpit to help the pilots out of their armor and flashes Mikaela a smile.]

[Angela Hansen was never supposed to be a soldier. At least not in a war of this scale. Her battlefield was the boardroom, the home, not the actual world. And she had been fine with that. She enjoyed her battlefields, found herself fitting them. But.

A lot of things changed on the day Scissure attacked.

She supposes, to some degree she should have been glad that Chuck had caught that cold the week before. That the fever had been enough for her to cave to his puppy eyes and call them both in. Back then she had been annoyed to some degree, work was important, they were in the middle of the biggest project of the year, and she was missing all that fun. But when she heard what happened to her office building, hear how there were no survivors in that rubble her stomach drops and she is so so glad of the second life she's been given.

The only thing she regrets is the loss of Herc. Moron trying to save everyone, cramming their neighbour and her kids on till there's no fit for his weight and while she's so proud of the hero he was, sometimes she finds herself hating him so much for leaving her, for leaving Chuck.

It's the reason that when Chuck makes it quite clear that one way or another he's going to the Academy she enrols herself. Chuck's all she has left these days, she's not losing him to another of those monsters while she stands on the sidelines. She's heard about the often compatibility between family, and all she can hope is that it's true. Because she'll pull whatever strings she can to make sure that if Chuck goes up in a jaeger, she'll be the one next to him.

Today's the first test of that all and Angela's actually a little surprised at how sick with nerves she feels.]

[ charlie had waited for days for his mom to come join dad and him but she never had and eventually he gets it, eventually it sinks in. his mom is never coming back. with that understanding comes anger and resentment because his dad is supposed to be a hero, right, his mom told him so, but what kind of hero can't save his own wife?

( it doesn't help that he knows: if herc hadn't saved him, his mom would still be alive. it's kind of his fault, isn't it? if he'd never been born his mom wouldn't have had to die. )

he stops letting anyone call him charlie. that's what his mom called him. so when, later, he meets mako mori, the iconic survivor of tokyo, when herc and her adopted dad stacker pentecost go off to talk about grown up stuff that charlie isn't allowed to listen in on even though he's a big boy now, he introduces himself as chuck, not charlie. ]

Academy days pass in what seems like a blur sometimes; Chuck fight to be top of the class and he fights hard for it, Mako Mori nipping at his heels every step of the way.

But he must have done something right (or someone doesn’t want Mori in a cockpit and doesn’t give much of a shit about what happens to Chuck – though that could be residual bitterness speaking) because he’s called up and she’s not. News is, of course, he’s co-piloting with his old man, the legendary Hercules Hansen (legendary, ha - just wait, it’d be Chuck’s name they were shouting, Chuck Hansen, there’ll be fucking signs and banners and people begging for his attention and he’ll be above it all, smirking down because he’s a rockstar, a pilot, better than the common man and it’s everything he wants, all he is) and he’s not real happy about that because it’s his father.

Chuck goes anyway because orders are orders and it’s what he’s got to do to keep moving, to surpass everyone, to keep piloting. He goes, he shows up for testing, proves he’s compatible in the kwoon and now al they gotta do is get him past the pons training and he’ll be piloting the still in progress Striker Eureka, first of the Mark Vs.

He can do this. He’s been in the sims, the training, all that. Now he’s just gotta open himself – his memories and heart and mind and everything he is to his father, the one person on the planet he cannot stand.

[Birthdays are not a thing they can afford to celebrate in the middle of assembling together a new Shatterdome and restoring one of the greatest (and prettiest) Mark-III Jaegers, but Mako knows when Tendo's birthday is. And while she doesn't go overboard with a lot of many things, there is something possitive and hopeful towards celebrating birthdays, in her mind; another year of being alive, another year closer to the end of the war against Kaijuu, she hopes.

Either way. Pentecost doesn't authorize exits into the city of Hong Kong, because they're here on duty not on pleasure, but even she has one day off every week, and this particular week she takes it to go to a pretty shady place in the market.

When she drops in and sits next to Tengo at the table in the mess that day, she does it with a small package wrapped in brown paper (you know, the size of a bag of coffee beans), and slides it over to him on the bench.]

[ the thing about having been a dancer since practically before she could walk is that when it comes to physical compatibility, virginia thrussell seems to be fairly compatible with everyone she's met in the kwoon. there's varying degrees of compatibility, but she's surprisingly adaptable. or maybe not so surprisingly. she's spent her entire life studying the movements of other people and learning to match her body to theirs. learning the kata taught to all jaeger pilot hopefuls is a little difficult, but when she thinks of it in terms of choreography it becomes a little easier.

the only thing she's a little worried about is the rest of the compatibility equation. being able to match the rhythms of the body is one thing. mind-melding with another human being, especially since gin was one of the few solo applicants to the academy this year, is another thing entirely. so it's with a little trepidation that she sits outside the offices of the shrinks and brain scientists that have been doing scans and asking questions for days on end. ]

[It's been a year almost to the day since Navid's first encounter with the Kaiju and as he sits in the corner booth at the diner, watching Sheiva flirt with the waiter behind the counter, it finally feels like the newness of being a pilot is starting to wear off. He's under no illusions that he's still new compared to the rest of the pilots, but he's no longer the newest or least experienced, and has a few take-downs under his belt now. That he gets to work protecting LA where his rather large family lives puts him further at ease. It isn't that he doesn't trust the other pilots, not that he thinks any harm would come to his family who further inland than some, but the fact is that he just feels better doing the job himself. After the first few neural links with Sheiva, he knows that she feels the same way. Her own family lives on the East Coast, well away from the threat of kaiju, but it's hard not to separate individual feelings after a while. She's seen his history with his grandparents and siblings, met them herself, and with her own family safe it's understandable that she too is motivated to keep them safe, and everyone else in the city.

Nights like this away from the base are good however. Sheiva's the sort to play as hard as she works, and Navid doesn't mind letting her drag her around to bars, restaurants, and clubs to keep her company or make sure she gets back in one piece. Watching her lean on the counter with a lock of hair twirled around her finger, he leans back in his seat amused. By the way she's smiling at the waiter, and the dazed sort of look in his eyes, he gets the impression that she'll be finding her way back to base in the morning. That's fine with him. Another fifteen, twenty minutes and he can probably head back alone to get some shut-eye.

Until then he'll nurse his decaf coffee and munch on fries while catching up with the day's paper.]

[This gala celebrates the people the media now dubs the Heroes of the World, but it's just another political propaganda with half the Shatterdome officials and the three remaining pilots (plus Marshal) ushered over for the sake of some pictures that will make some man in a suit look more benevolent now than months ago when he signed off the closure of the Jaeger programme. Mako hates the hypocrisy in the air, but almost everyone else seems to like the free open bar. So there is that.

She ends up finding Yancy in a corner, surprisingly alone, and thinks it must be fate that she's carrying two glasses with her, because he looks like he can use a drink. Or another, whichever the case. The table he's occupying is mostly empty, so it's not difficult for Mako to take a seat next to him.]

I haven't seen you all night. [Because they'd sat Yancy, Raleigh, Mako in that order, all three of them together surrounded by journalists and a few army officials, at what Mako's been secretly calling the Gipsy Danger table. And while it wouldn't have been difficult to lean over and catch Yancy's eye during dinner, it wouldn't have been polite to show half the table her cleavage; besides, it sounds cool to open with that line. (Remnants of Drifting with Raleigh; that intention to impress Yancy Becket all the time.)]
