[Wichita's past the point of wanting to cry, even though her muscles ache and every bruise and cut she's managed to get herself were pulsing with dizzying pain. She's far beyond needing to cry about it, her system completely running on adrenaline and her rarely-flexed fight instinct instead of actually thinking through her next move or dodge. This isn't the reason why they spar, she knows it's kind of the opposite of why she asked to learn to fight, but apparently that doesn't matter to her anymore. He's bested her one too many times this session, and just once she wants to be a step ahead of him.

And the way she's fighting now? It'll never happen. But damnit, she's trying.

The hand armed with his knife swings out widely when she thinks he's close enough, but she still misses. And instead of following through with another, closer swipe, she backpedals, because she's absolutely scared of the fact that he'll likely just catch her hand and cut her with her own weapon again, and she can't stand it. Yes, right, did we mention Wesley's unarmed? Because he is, and it just makes it more infuriating that she has nicks along her arms and a few just below her knee, just because she couldn't get away fast enough.

She growls with frustration and keeps putting more space between them, using the back of her hand to push her sweaty bangs away from her forehead. She should end this, she knows it, but instead after... little to no thought, she runs at him again, full tilt.]

Winter in Los Angeles was unlike any Holiday special that ever graced the television screen. There were no cheerful carolers, streamers and a world blanketed in white to give it the illusion of immaculateness. It was overcast with showers haplessly washing away the oil-slicks of the damaged 101 Freeway. Frigid. Gray. Miserable.

Gregory Edgeworth regretted every second he was spending this Saturday not home and attempting to get in some bonding time with his son before the holidays. Instead he was driving up Ventura freeway into the hilly district of Encino to meet with his rival in a vital court case that was soon coming to a head. The drably dressed defense attorney silently hoped his son Miles didn't resent him for canceling their dinner date together again. On the outside, his bookworm of a boy never seemed to mind, but he couldn't help but molder over the hole he must be making in his only child's life.

The silvery showers pelted his beat-up Studebaker with the wipers sheeting away the ripples across his windshield at the speed of a snail. He was lucky not to get in an accident, despite being praised often for being such a cautious and defensive driver. The long drive gave him too much time to think about all the grievances this case was giving him, but he hoped above anything that this last stunt would lead him to the truth of the matter. Von Karma was hiding something vital from him and he'd get to the bottom of it... even if it meant forgoing his innate politeness.

Passing through fleets of trees and greenery into the high-profile residential area, he had the feeling he was in the midst of the movie stars. On every corner was a mansion of daunting size and measure with new top-of-the-line vehicles parked in every circular driveway. It was enough to make a man feel a little self-conscious.

But nothing would prepare him for the soul-crushing mammoth of a plot that housed Von Karma estate. Gregory pulled his car to a slow stop, his mouth pressing in a hard line as if to steel himself as his eyes seemed to dilate just to take in the manor's sheer grandeur. He stepped out of his car without an umbrella, and pulled up the lapels of his coat just to shield his face from the sting of the wind, taking care to pat his fedora down as well.

Much to his chagrin he looked just like the suspicious black silhouette on the neighborhood-watch signs, yet he carried on past the manor's large gates relatively un-noticed. He had given Von Karma a notif that he was coming that evening, but by the dark look of the mansion, it seemed he might have forgotten.

Gregory stood outside the lofty double-doors with their sinister door-knockers. In the dramatic shadows their fanged faces almost looked alive and ready to devour him if he got near.

...He had to be rational. He couldn't let the intimidation of this place run him off. That was the tactic Von Karma used on all his opponents. Steadfast and stubborn, with a passion for truth, Gregory wouldn't be stumbled.

Though his fingertips still trembled just slight as he rang the daunting bell.

"DI-DONG."

The reverberating sound was like a harbinger of his impending doom.
