Aristeo had tried his best and no one could possibly deny it.

He had spent weeks practicing cooking this obscure meal called English breakfast, had even swallowed his pride and asked for help.

Yet here he stood in the kitchen of Alice's apartment at six o'clock wearing nothing but a pair of pajama pants, with something gooey slowly turning black in the frying pan and gently wafting delicate curls of smoke. Aristeo poked listlessly at the scrambled - now charred - eggs and sighed.

So much for that.

It had seemed like such a good idea to surprise Alice with breakfast in bed one day, to prove to her how much he could and would change to please her. He could be a humbler man for her, he knew he could. He simply... couldn't cook for her. No matter how earnest his efforts might be.

Alistair didn't sleep, so spending a night in Leah's bed for any other reason than having sex (something they still hadn't gotten around to actually attempting) seemed rather pointless.

It said rather a lot about his character that this was the way he viewed things.

Still, there was a certain logic to it beyond the fact that he was more or less a complete prick. As much as he cared for Leah, and he couldn't really deny that he did any longer, the fact remained that she reeked, and he knew that she felt the same way about his scent. Not to mention the fact that to her he felt like a block of rather cold stone that could move, which didn't actually seem like something you'd want to cuddle up to in your sleep.

All in all, circumstances were not ideal for a pleasant night for either of them.
