[ She was relieved when he said it, even if she suspected he was mostly telling her what he thought she wanted to hear. It was true, though - she did want to hear it. This house was perfect, as far as she could tell, and Deanna wanted Cas to agree with her on that. ]

I like it too.

[ She leaned into his side, squeezing his hand once before drawing back away a little. ]

It's just...all the stuff I never thought I could have, you know?

[ Not just the house. The house was the smallest part of it, honestly. She was really talking about everything else. The fact that they were even talking about buying a house, that their lives were stable enough that they could do it. The fact that she wa alive and expecting to stay that way. The fact that she and Sam weren't alone anymore.

The fact that she had Cas. She looked up at him, carefully. ]

But I want you to like it too.

[unwary]

I like it as well.

[He's smiling, slight but honest. It's nothing he has ever really thought of. He wasn't born human, he didn't share the same kinds of dreams... settling down in a house for whatever remainder there was of his life. But it wasn't unpleasant.

Not when it was Deanna who would be at his side.]

We should see if we can get this one.

[He wanted her to have this... all of the things that followed that normal life that she wanted, while they could have it.]

[ Deanna stops and turns to look back at the house as they reach the car. He says it like it's so easy. Just see if we can get this one. Like they can ask for it, and it'll be theirs. Deanna's so rarely gotten anything she really wanted.

But, she realizes, he's right. It really can be that easy. Sign some papers, hand over some cash, and that's it. The place can be hers, hers and Cas', a sanctuary that no one will take away from them.

It's stupid - it's just a house - but her breath catches, all the same, and she squeezes his hand tight. ]

We should.

And we are definitely getting a hugeass bed with memory foam.

Your obsession with memory foam is peculiar, Deanna. [He hasn't seen Sam or anyone else they knew get so excited over their bedding behind...

He smiles though, watching the change in her expression. She looks something close to happy and that's always been a good look on her -- and one he's never gotten to see enough of.

He squeezes her hand in return and nods.]

Dude, are you kidding? It's freaking great.

[ She is happy, or as close as she's ever been, her heart feeling lighter as he squeezes her hand. She squeezes back, just a bit, and then lets go to move around the car and slide in. ]

Hey, let's go look at furniture and stuff.

[ Nothing she ever would have said five years ago, or even one - but now, there's nothing she wants more than to go shopping with Cas, getting ideas on how to decorate their dream house. ]

[unwary]

[Well, he can't exactly argue. He does enjoy her bed back at the bunker and an even larger one would be better. Mostly, he's looking forward to being with Deanna, settled.

They may never get fully out of hunting, but it would be nice to watch her have a safe place to go, an actual home beyond the bunker.

He moves to settle in the passenger side and he nods at her suggestion.]

If you want. [He's never seen her like this before and there's a smile tugging at his lips just slightly.] We'll need a lot.

[ If it had been anyone else smiling at her like that after she'd suggested going to look at furniture, of all things, she would have accused them of laughing at her. Cas is different, though. He'd never laugh at her that way. Maybe that's part of why she likes him so much. She doesn't have to keep up appearances with him, or worry about what he thinks of her. She can just be Deanna with him, whoever that happens to be on any given day.

She grins, rolling her eyes as she starts the Impala. ]

Yeah, we will. Other stuff, too - towels and curtains and stuff.

[ IS SHE REALLY TALKING ABOUT BUYING CURTAINS WITH CAS yeah you bet she is. ]

Yes, dishes too.

[He might be human now, but that doesn't mean he necessarily understands the importance of some furniture... or the difference between the way some curtains look versus others as long as they do their purpose and keep the sun out while they're trying to rest.

You are in for an experience, Deanna.

Oh and speaking of necessities--]

We will need a television too.

[He liked watching TV as an angel and he likes it now too, okay. This is important, Deanna.]

[ She's always in for an experience with Cas, but she doesn't mind. She never knows what to expect next with him, but that's part of the appeal. He keeps her on her toes, even if he always has her back.

She should have expected the TV comment, though. Cas and his...god, she doesn't even know what he watches half the time. Soaps? Nature documentaries? Deanna shakes her head, grinning a little. ]

Giant flatscreen just for you, Cas. It'll take up half the wall.

[unwary]

[He watches everything, Deanna. Everything. It's a good learning experience when it comes to humanity!

He gives an amused look over at that.]

Are we going to get a pet too? [It seems like that went with the house and picket fence ideal for humans.

Plus, he wouldn't mind a cat actually...]

[ She's not looking forward to the aftereffects of the life lessons he gets from sitcoms and soap operas, that's all. His pet idea gets him a quick, surprised glance. Deanna hadn't considered that. ]

Uh. I dunno. Do you want one?

[ She points at him quickly, cutting him off before he even gets a chance to answer. ]

No dogs.

[unwary]

[He promises to not cause any unnecessary drama like in those soap operas. There's so much memory loss or surprise children that pop up in those... as well as bizarre love triangles. They have enough other types of trouble to have to deal with.

But, Deanna, come on.

Let him answer first at least |:

No, no dogs. He knows why she's uncomfortable around them.]

I was thinking about a cat.

A cat?

[ Her eyebrows shoot upwards, her expression turning thoughtful. Deanna's never thought of herself as a cat person, but... ]

You really want one, Cas?

[unwary]

I think it would be a good addition.

[Be glad he didn't suggest anything strange yet, Deanna.]

[ Yet.

Deanna shrugs her shoulders, thinking. ]

I guess it wouldn't hurt to go down to the shelter and look.

[unwary]

[Have some faith in him, Deanna.

He won't suggest a monkey. Possibly.]

[ Possibly.

She's never been able to refuse him, though, and all she needs to hear is that simple confirmation before she's smiling to herself, shaking her head as she makes a lefthand turn and heads for the local animal shelter. ]

Why a cat?

Because you aren't fond of dogs. [He could understand the phobia on her part. She had been left with... quite an impression of them before she went to Hell. He didn't want to cause her unnecessary distress, even if he did like dogs as well.]

Many consider them clean animals, which is something else I thought you would appreciate. [No dog smell in the car, Deanna.

Just... cat.]

[ She can't really deny that, and she wouldn't try. Deanna loves Cas, and she'd do a lot for him, but there's no use lying to him and saying she's totally okay with something when she's really not.

All the same, she glances over at him, trying to get a read on him. ]

But a cat's something you really want. Not just...a dog substitute you think I'd be okay with.

[unwary]

It's not.

[It's better than bees, Deanna.

You don't want him naked on the hood covered in bees again. Besides, now the bee stings would hurt... and probably in sensitive areas.

But she gets a slight smile out of him. He knows what she's trying to do.]

Are you certain you want a pet, Deanna?

[nochickflicks]

[ Deanna bites back her first instinctive response. I'm taking you to look for one, aren't I? It's a deflection, not a real answer, and she's afraid that Cas will know it by this point.

She's silent for a moment instead, staring straight ahead out the windshield as she drives. ]

I can't even keep my family safe, Cas.

[ Not just Sam, not just John. She's talking about all of them - Ellen, Jo, all the people she'd had some kind of responsibility for and lost somewhere along the way.

The words are quiet, more sober all of a sudden, and she glances at him only briefly before looking away again. ]

Why would anyone trust me with some helpless animal?

[unwary]

You've always tried, Deanna.

[She has always fought with everything in her when it comes to her family, in the face of everything. He frowns when she glimpses at him before carefully reaching across the seat to rest a hand on her shoulder. It's an attempt at comfort -- though he's still not entirely talented at it.]

You think you wouldn't be able to take care of it. [It's not a question. She practically said as much after all.] Things are different now.

[Calm enough that they could even entertain the idea of actually buying a house of their own, something beyond the bunker.]

Trying -

[ She cuts herself off before she can get the rest of the words out. Trying isn't the same as succeeding. Trying doesn't mean anything when your friends are bleeding out in front of you, dying in your arms and doing it all for you.

She shakes her head violently, keeping her eyes on the road, but she doesn't brush him off when he puts a hand on her shoulder. ]

I wouldn't even know where to start, Cas. You think I ever had a pet growing up, living out of suitcases and fast food bags?

[unwary]

[He could argue with her over the good she's done, the sacrifices she, herself, had made without a second thought, but he isn't certain if it's the topic he should poke at just now, when she's already agitated enough.

He wants her to see what he sees though, one day.

What so many others see as well.]

[ Deanna's still not convinced, though, glowering darkly even as she pulls into the animal shelter parking lot and parks the car. It's still a big responsibility, and it's not just the scooping litter boxes and buying cat food she's concerned about. What if something happens? To her, to Cas, to the cat? What if this whole buying a house, settling down thing turns out to be an impossible pipe dream?

She doesn't get out right away, just shuts the car off and sits there behind the wheel, staring straight ahead out the windshield. ]
