[If it's infuriating for Chante, it's hard for Marius. He knows how close Chcnte is to his father - he's taken care of him, raised him up, and Chante'd done the same for him in his old age.

But his father is an ex-convict, thrown in jail for a small crime but held longer for trying to escape. He may have changed, become a better man , but they're onto him again, and it's not safe. It's not safe for Chante, he can't know. He'd think of his father differently, he'd be even angrier at him for leaving.

He bites his lip, shifting from side to side, and shakes his head.]

I can't. Your father said it's confidential.

[The thing is that it's pretty difficult to keep a stern expression when Marius does that because he could be very endearing, shifting around awkwardly like that, and for a moment Chante wants to simply let things go and smile so that Marius can, too. Only for a moment, however. He's more tired of everyone trying to keep everything from him as if he would break at the smallest touch. Didn't he deserve to know something, at least?]

My father says that about anything I ask. Are you going to be the same?

[He will be punctuating that with a frown, just to get the point across that he is very, very unhappy.]

I -

[He shakes his head, and there's the frown. Chante only frowns that way when he's grave, serious. It's actually a little scary. Marius only wants to see his husband smile, to see him free of worry, but he can't. Chante's father made him swear, promise that Chante would not know.

He places a hand on his shoulder, shaking his head, and looks straight into his eyes, trying to be as unwavering as he can be.]

No. I won't, Chante. I open up to you, try to share my life with you as much as I can and support you. This is the only thing that I can't tell you in good faith.

[Chante holds his gaze with equal resoluteness, silent for a moment until he finally admits to himself from the look in his husband's eyes that Marius really won't tell him anything. And maybe it isn't entirely Marius's fault anyway, if it's his father that made Marius promise to keep it secret. Chante would simply have to talk to his father again instead; it's not as if it's going to be particularly hard to find him.]

Fine. I don't like it, but it really does seem that you'll be keeping it between yourselves no matter what I say or do.

[And he raises his chin a little, lips pressed together, matching Marius's determination with his own.]

You'll just have to make up to me.

[He really does admire Chante's determination - it's one of the reasons he'd stayed in love with him once he'd gotten to know him, after the whole mishap with seeing him at the park every day and then specifically going to the park in hopes that he'd see Chante. And, admittedly, he doesn't know Chante's father well, but he thinks that maybe with this sort of headstrong behavior, he can convince his father to tell him anything.

He doesn't remove his hand from his husband's arm, trying to calm him a bit. He really doesn't want a fight.]

I'll make it up to you any way I can, you know that.

[And he gives his husband a little smile, a hopeful one.]

[He makes an attempt to keep that frown in place. He even tries to resist the urge to lay his hand atop the one on his shoulder. But it's more tempting to give in because he also would rather not have a disagreement with Marius, and then that smile happens and he knows he wants to keep it there, that that is the look he always wants to see his husband wear. Chante's features automatically relax, and his eyes widen a little in curiosity. And maybe, maybe there's also just a little bit of slyness in them.]

Any way you can?

[He's still mad at Marius, of course, is what he tells himself. But how can anyone resist that smile?]

[He sees the slyness, the curiosity in Chante's eyes, and he has to restrain himself from sputtering a little, making a complete fool out of himself as he's so wont to do. Even though they're married, Marius still is easily flustered when his husband makes any sort of insinuation at all. It's all so very new to him, still.]

A-any way at all! I promise.

[It's not really all that difficult to pick up on that fluster and what Marius thinks Chante is implying, and he almost laughs at that despite a mild embarrassment of his own because it had not been what he was thinking at all.

Although he won't deny a bit of lovemaking, either.

But he won't tease Marius about that, not right now at least, though his lips still do spread into a triumphant smile. He reaches for the hand on his shoulder and slides it off, clasps it in both of his, displaying a hopeful look on his face as he keeps his eyes on Marius's.]

Will you give me an honest answer to anything else I ask?

[Marius wouldn't deny it, either. In fact, there are few things in the world that Marius would deny - could deny his Chante. And, despite the fact that, like everything else, he still bumbles through it , he really does enjoy the alone time they get to share.

But he gives Chante a little nod, twining his fingers with one of his husband's hands.]

Anything. I can't lie to you - well, you know , I'm a terrible liar to begin with.

[Oh, yes, Chante knows—he can't possibly imagine Marius as anything else, really, kind and honest person that he is. He gives his husband's hand a gentle squeeze in response, and then he knows that he'll just have to forgive him now. He's still smiling when he says,]

I like it better when you're a terrible liar.

[Because Marius wouldn't be Marius if he wasn't.]

Then I'll try not to get any better. For your sake.

[It's a little joke, though, because he doesn't lie to Chante, as a rule. He squeezes his hand back and leans in to kiss his husband's forehead. It's not much in the way of making up for things, but Marius will try in any way he can.]

[And Chante definitely knows Marius won't ever lie to him; it is just something that he doesn't even question; a fact of the universe, maybe. So a chuckle escapes him, and then another one as his eyes flutter close when lips meet his forehead.

When Marius draws back, he looks into his husband's eyes with a fondness and a love with a strength he did not know he was capable of, and he holds his gaze for a moment before he reaches out with his free hand to grab Marius's other hand. He begins to take backward steps, pulling Marius along with him, grinning playfully.]

Remember, you have to answer anything I ask. Okay?

[That look is really all Marius needs to have his knees go weak. He hopes that feeling never goes away. Luckily, Chante is there to help him, to pull him along, and he'll be happy to follow him.]

Anything. I may need to sit down for this...

Then let's sit in the gardens.

[There's a laugh, though, as he releases one hand so he can turn and actually see where he's heading. He breaks into a jog, still dragging his husband along with the other hand, and then he asks, almost suddenly,]

What was Courfeyrac referring to when he talked about that one night you told him something that didn't mean what you thought it meant?

[Because in this verse everything is happy and no one dies ok ok. ;; ]

[Marius does his best to keep up, grinning wildly until Chante asks him.

And then his cheeks tinge.]

Oh.

[This is embarrassing.]

I meant to ask him if I could stay over for a while, because I was losing the apartment and didn't have enough to pay rent. But I got flustered, and it came out 'I have come to sleep with you.'

[Chante actually has to pause, his footsteps slowing down to a halt as he presses his lips together, trying to fight back a grin and a chuckle. It's awful of him; he should not be laughing at his husband and embarrassing him any further, but it's actually really funny.

He tries to put on a straight face as best as he could.]

That's... [A snort.] Um. Terrible.

[This just got even more embarrassing. He's red all the way down to his neck now, but he really shouldn't be. He promised he'd tell Chante anything, anything he'd ask.]

Yes, well. I was...my tongue got tied up. I meant to say 'Can I stay here' and 'I need to sleep'. They came out at the same time.

[Oh. Oh dear. Chante still feels on the verge of uncontrollable laughter, but Marius has grown so red that he's also getting a little bit worried now. Chante takes both Marius's hands in his again and squeezes them tight.]

It's alright, Marius. Everyone has those kinds of slip-ups sometimes, right?

[He smiles, hopefully, praying that Marius would feel comforted with his actions in some way.]

I guess. It just seems like it happens to me more often.

[Really, he can't blame Chante too much for laughing. The entire situation, in hindsight, is kind of hilarious. He sits down on a bench in the garden, squeezing his husband's hands back.]

What else do you want to know?

I think it's cute.

[Chante says that in an almost abrupt manner, sounding almost like he's stating a fact of nature, and then he's continuing before Marius can even respond.]

What is... [There's a moment's pause wherein he considers what else to ask; "most embarrassing moment" is out of the question, now that Marius seems embarrassed enough, so maybe it's time to take a safer route.] your favorite animal?

[He laughs a little bit, his nose crinkling. If Chante says it, it must be true.]

I...don't really know? I can tell you that I am not good with cats, at all.

[He'd had an experience with Eponine's cat almost clawing his face off. Good times, good times.]

[He definitely looks utterly surprised at that answer, eyes wide and head tilted almost imperceptibly to one side.]

You're not?

[Because Chante just can't possibly imagine how cats can hate his sweet, gentle, loving husband!]

Not in the slightest.

[He gives a little nervous chuckle, looking over at Chante.]

Though maybe Eponine's cat just thinks it's a lion.

[Chante grins when their eyes meet, and he impulsively leans over to kiss Marius on the cheek, because Marius is endearing when he chuckles like that and because Chante loves him even if he's not very good with cats.]

Maybe it does, and maybe that's just how lions play.

[he returns the kiss on the cheek, laughing. He can't help being endearing. It just happens.]
