THE NEXT GENERATION MEME
Somewhere down the line, the two of you became parents.
Maybe this is an AU, canon taking a hard left, or simply where life ended up. Either way, there’s a kid to raise now.
Pick a point in the story and see how that’s going.
HOW TO PLAY
- Post your character, canon, and preferences.
- Age younger characters up to an appropriate childrearing age.
- Work out whatever family details you need for the thread.
- Pick a prompt or roll RNG.
- THE FIRST NIGHT HOME: The baby is finally asleep, but neither of you is. Now that the house has gone quiet, the fact that you’re responsible for this tiny person is starting to feel very real.
- YOUR TURN: The baby has finally settled against one of you, and moving them now would be a terrible idea. Unfortunately, the person currently trapped underneath them desperately needs something.
- THE DRAWING: One of you finds a drawing, story, family tree, or school assignment about your family and brings it straight to the other. Some of the details may require discussion.
- JUST LIKE YOU: Something happened today that was so unmistakably the other parent’s influence that you’ve been waiting for a chance to tell them about it.
- THEY’RE GROWING UP: Something that used to fit doesn’t anymore, or something they once loved has quietly been left behind. One of you notices first.
- AFTER BEDTIME: The house is finally quiet, nobody needs anything for the moment, and you’ve both made it to the end of the day. Sit down while you still can.
- I CAN’T BELIEVE WE MADE THEM: Something happened today that leaves one of you looking at the other like this must somehow be their fault. Or their accomplishment. Maybe both.
- THAT IS YOUR CHILD: Something has gone spectacularly wrong, and one look at the evidence is enough to tell you exactly which parent this came from.
- DON’T LAUGH: You’re supposed to be backing each other up, but one of you is dangerously close to laughing at the worst possible moment.
- YOU TAUGHT THEM THAT: A familiar phrase, habit, trick, or questionable skill has turned up in the next generation. The other parent would like to know where that came from.
- THE MESS: Nobody is around to confess, but the evidence is extensive. You’ve found the aftermath first, so naturally the other parent needs to come see this too.
- WHO SAID YES?: Apparently one parent already gave permission. That would be useful information if the parent in question remembered doing it.
- STOP ENCOURAGING THIS: One of you is trying to put a stop to a new behavior. The other has already laughed, smiled, or made the mistake of asking to see it again.
- THE CALL: The phone rings, and whatever you were doing before that no longer matters. Somebody needs picking up, something needs explaining, or both.
- NOTHING IS WORKING: You’ve fed the baby, changed them, checked everything you know to check, and walked enough laps to wear a path in the floor. They’re still crying, and both of you are getting tired enough to fray.
- WE NEED TO TALK: One of you has found something serious enough that the other parent needs to hear about it before either of you decides what happens next.
- NO, WE AGREED: You made the decision together. Somewhere between then and now, one of you went back on it.
- THE SECRET: One of you promised not to tell the other something. At the time, that seemed manageable. Now keeping the promise may make things worse.
- YOU’RE TOO HARD ON THEM: You waited until the two of you were alone to say it, but you’ve been thinking it for a while. The other parent pushed too far.
- YOU’RE TOO EASY ON THEM: This isn’t the first time one of you has stepped in, let something slide, or softened a consequence. It may be the first time the other parent refuses to let it go.
- THE WORST DAY: Everything went badly today. Everyone is safe, but one of you is still shaken when the other comes through the door.
- WE’RE NOT OKAY: The kid isn’t the problem. Whatever has been wrong between the two of you has started bleeding into the rest of the household, and neither of you can ignore it anymore.
- THE THING THEY HEARD: You thought the argument was private. It wasn’t, and now the two of you have to decide what comes next.
- THE EMPTY ROOM: The room isn’t theirs anymore. Maybe they grew up, maybe they left angry, maybe something much worse happened. Whatever the reason, the two of you are standing in what they left behind.
- WILDCARD: Something has happened in the course of raising a kid together. Bring it to the other parent and see where the thread goes.

info in journal; i'll be playing him at a post-ED-recovery/post-therapy canonpoint for this one because he definitely wouldn't want to become a parent until he knew he was stable; also very much here for the messiness of what an airline pilot's schedule realistically does to a family dynamic - missing milestones and holidays, added strain on the other parent and potential conflict over it, young children not understanding why dad isn't here all the time, guilt over it, etc. happy to plot over pm, toss up the starter, etc. ]

lmk if i need to change anything!
But somehow, things kept working out here. Freddie isn't perfect, and she isn't either, but there hasn't been any obstacle that had ruined things so far. She's even started to quietly look at new places, ones big enough for all of them. Started daydreaming about having him with her at Christmas, preparing him for her overwhelming family. It's so enjoyable to plan for good things, rather than preparing for the worst, that she almost misses her phone ringing. ]
Freddie. [ He's in the living room, and even if he didn't hear the increasing panic in her voice behind her closed door, it's obvious on her face now as she darts around the space, picking up her keys, her purse. ] I have to go. That was the day care. Rhaenys hurt herself.
[ Elia knows accidents happen, that Rhaenys is a tough little girl, but she's still Elia's little girl. She has get over there, as soon as possible. ] They're at the hospital. Will you come with me?

And now, that three year old is toddling her way into their bedroom before climbing up onto their bed, her giggling breathless. Her little sister, born nearly a year after "Bee", comes crawling in after her. Noel is still trying to figure out walking.
But she knows how to stand up with the aid of something else - like the side of their bed - and then demand of Leon: ]
Up! Pa-pa! Up!

He hadn't been ready to get up yet.
The three-year-old piledriving into his mattress makes short work of that.
But what really drags him to consciousness is the tiny hands that grab at his arm, a stumbling weight into the side of the bed that isn't quite the same as a soft crawl. The little pat at him. And finally that chipper little demand that is far too awake for this hour.
Tiredly he blinks awake with bleary eyes, and shifts so that his arm hands out of the bed, toward Noel. ]
One of these days we're getting you stairs, kid.
21 + 22-ish for the western au lol
It had been nearly two years until he was found by a member of The Connections. They made their threats, eyeing up Grace, who had been swaddled to his chest in a harness, but ultimately dismissing her. They wanted Rose.
And they would kill Ethan for taking her.
The man - a mountain lion with long pointed nails - didn't get the chance to do much else. Leon shot the man in the knee and told him to "get off his property". Rose was safe, Grace was safe, but Ethan was still shaking, still breathing too hard, mind whirring, fox ears flat against his head, tail twitching in agitation.
He hunches over the sink, feeling nauseous as he realizes: they can't stay here. And he was a fool for thinking they could. He needs to take Rose and leave. Grace will be safe here with Leon. Even as it will kill him to leave either of them. ]
kinda 1-ish lol - u kno the au
It probably helped Rose was only almost two years older and the age gap between them wouldn't be that big.
Thankfully, Grace took to a routine with little fuss. It allowed Sherry and Rose time to spend with the new addition and then Leon and Ethan. And then allow Leon to help Ethan readjust to being out of the hospital again.
That night, with the rain pouring outside and a soft rumble of thunder above, Sherry was downstairs doing homework at their large table just outside of the kitchen. Rose was in her booster seat, coloring. Grace was fast asleep in her crib. Ethan was taking a shower -- with his husband's insisted "assistance". ]
Starting to think you just like getting me naked, Mr. Kennedy.
[ He can't even stop the chuckle that comes out after saying that, reaching up to fondle and gently squeeze at his mate's chest. A thumb circles one swollen nipple, ]
Good thing the feeling is mutual.
[ While they are still under the warm spray of the shower, having already washed each other's hair and bodies, he leans in to take that nipple in his mouth and suckle on it. ]
cw: 🌶️
Menace--you're a menace.
[ A whine slips. At the sensitivity. At the pressure behind it. ]
🌶️ 🥛
He pulls off, running his tongue flat against the nipple after doing so. ]
You mean like you when I'm like this?
[ There's no heat in that statement, just a satisfied smirk because they both enjoy this part of the post-pregnancy (like a lot). Especially when it only happens to Alphas who had a strong enough bond with their Omegas: carrying the milk for their child for some of those pregnancies.
One hand goes down to grab both their hard cocks and rub them together in that grip, and the other fondles Leon's other breast, giving it a little squeeze. Fond, appraising, and deeply aroused. ]
You drive me crazy, too, you know.
[ His mouth then goes to the other nipple, wanting to give it equal attention. ]
another 21 - for the post-RE7 au
And then the notification comes in that the security system has rebooted.
Still no response to any message. A phone call goes to voicemail.
Whenever Leon comes home, the front door will be open, the recorded voice from the security system chiming in to say "front door, open" and "back door, open". Blood will be smeared on the walls leading to and from the living room, furniture turned over and fragile items broken. The only other sound Leon will hear will be his youngest daughter, Grace, sniffling in her playpen in the living room. The moment she sees him, the toddler starts wailing, reaching for him, face red and wet from all the crying she's been doing since her other parent was taken. ]
sick day - father-son cuteness
He did his best on the lessons he was taught, paying attention to everything the teacher said. He enjoyed coloring and learning to write better (he already knew how to write his name). He enjoyed playing with the building blocks for the most part, moving away when the rowdier kids came in to push everything down. Same with the kids taking the toys and slamming them together.
He tended to gravitate back towards the book corner and would flip through his favorite ones. Some of them he could already read and others, he would slowly teach himself. Lunch and naptime were the best times. Along with going outside to play. Out there, where he could run and jump and climb on things, it felt easier to engage with the other kids. Especially when he got to kick the smaller soccer ball around, dribble the dodge balls, and toss the pickle balls around. It was fun and it was Elliot at his most sociable.
So, when the week before Thanksgiving rolled around, and Elliot was practically dragged out of bed, Ethan frowned and took his temperature before breakfast. It read as "normal" but he still felt his baby boy looked tired and pale. Elliot refused most breakfast foods he loved in favor of one piece of toast.
Before letting him out of the car, Ethan told their son to go to the nurse if he felt worse during his school day. His Papa would come get him and take him home. Normally, Ethan would do it. But he was in the middle of a week long technological decoder training course at work. He needed to be as present as he could be for it. They were, thankfully, in-between cases at work so the most Leon was doing was paperwork. Famously, his favorite thing (it was not).
Elliot didn't even have the chance to ask to go to the nurse. He was sent there by his teacher when he put his head down at his table and stayed there even during play-break time. The nurse let him lay on the cot in her office, his head and body achey from the fever. He heard her making the call to his father and then fell asleep before she hung up. ]
no subject
But the context of that call is more worrying than any sort of relief at being spared the office. Elliot is sick. And not just sick, it sounds miserable.
He knew something had been wrong the minute the kid had missed hash this morning. No well child in their house does that.
And worse: he has too much time to ruminate on the possibilities on the drive from the Capitol back to Bethesda. Is it a fever? An infection? A parasite? WORSE? Leon doesn't waste any time when it makes it to the school, barely turning the Jeep off before he's up the stairs and rushing into the front office with a very scant, clipped explanation of why he's shown up.
Thankfully, the nurse is waiting and knows what he means (to the rescue of the wide-eyed receptionist who had still been stumbling over a clarifying question while he was being escorted back to the tiny little sick room the school has).
Elliot's curled in on himself while he sleeps, shivering and sweaty to the touch. He can feel the fever radiating from him when he brushes his hair back and tries to gently wake him. ]
Hey buddy. [ It's a quiet greeting, awed at how miserable his boy looks. ] You ready to go home?
1 - first day home
And already Hope was proving to be different from her older siblings. Quiet and sleeping a lot of the time. Already she smelled of warm spices (like Leon), still too nebulous to tell which ones yet. Her brown eyes would get big and take everything in when she was awake, her tiny hands holding with a stronger grip than expected, her little body soft and warm, eager to curve against whichever parent was holding her. So far, she had only smiled at her parents. Her siblings were eyed with silent uncertainty.
It made Ethan laugh more than anything. Figures the kid with his eyes and hair would be like that (coming after three that took after Leon in looks).
She was also the one Leon got to feed this time around, much like Grace years before. She had a healthy appetite from what they could tell but wasn't as vocally demanding as they were used to. This was also the birth Leon had to fight the most to be there for, their work trying to call him in multiple times. When he had already put in to have all of winter off months in advance once they knew the due date.
It was actually snowing outside on the day they were set to leave the hospital. New Years had come and gone (Hope had been very curious and judgey of the noisy fireworks) and they were now in January. Ethan had just placed the pacifier in Hope's mouth - giving her approval in breathy noises, one hand grabbing for Ethan's finger - when he looks up to Leon coming back in. His smile remains but his brow furrows slightly in confusion, ]
Couldn't find a wheelchair?
first day at schooool incoming
But they would just tell her they would be back soon and she would just get bored on their trips.
Rose and Grace were going to college ("the last school you go to when you're old enough") even though they still lived at home. Elliot was in high school and Hope took one look at their books and worksheets and papers they typed out and decided she didn't like it. The way Ell struggled with assignments sometimes - or just groaned about them - had Hope further deciding she was never going. Why did she need it? She could be what she wanted without it, right?
The classroom had looked nice enough: clean and colorful, the toys all sorted and organized, a whole corner dedicated to books, little welcome gifts for the new class of the new school year. But Hope stayed close to her parents, her little hands gripping Ethan's pants or Leon's jeans. On the way home, she slouched down in her seat in the back, voicing aloud: ]
Why do I need to go to school?
[ When they had tested her for preschool, Hope had scored high enough that the staff had suggested skipping pre-school, skipping kindergarten, and letting her go to first grade. Ethan had declined. He felt that would be too much for his already very introverted daughter. They did let her skip pre-school, though. So, really, he should've expected this kind of response from her. He sighs softly, turning his head to look back at her, ]
Because you'll get to learn new things and meet new kids.
[ Immediately: ]
I don't want to meet new kids.
14 - u asked for this lol
Ethan had chalked it up to maybe she had watched something too scary. Maybe her imagination was getting to her at night. She had always had a strong, active one.
He never thought, for one moment, that it was the start of something devious. Something evil coming for their child.
Not until they had reached the village proper and started going through houses. Most were old and worn, lived in for decades and showing it. Dusty and frayed tapestries hanging on walls next to religious imagery, cold fireplaces filled with the ashy remains of logs and soot, splintered wood everywhere, windows broken or covered in grime and frost. The smell of must in almost every room and rotten food in most of the kitchens. The smell of blood tinged most doorways if not straight up overpowered them in the cold. They found evidence of injury and foul play all around. They heard distant animal noises, wolves far off and out of sight.
But the people just weren't there. It's like the place had been abandoned. One such house they entered still had candles burning in it, speaking to someone still being around. The floor was getting covered in dried, flabby wax, hotter wax creating further divots and layers. And then he stepped into the most lit room of the place and saw them: pictures of their daughter. Her school picture, to be in fact. At the center. And then other candid ones of her outside, going in and out of her school building, at the grocery store, at the library. Even the infant one from the hospital.
Ethan stood there, staring, his whole body numb, eyes wide and unblinking. He couldn't process what the hell he was even staring at. And then, above Hope's school picture at the center of the collage, was the same picture they had been seeing of the woman named "Mother Miranda".
Suddenly, his phone buzzes in his belt and he's startled into finally moving. He checks it because only Sherry, Leon, and Hunnigan have this number. He sees Sherry's name and he feels sick. His stomach drops and he already knows before he answers. He just knows, tears filling unblinking eyes.
Hope wasn't at school. Someone had already picked her up earlier in the day. Someone that looked like Ethan. Just like him. She saw the footage on their cameras.
It felt like his heart had stopped in his chest, his arm fell and the phone clattered to the dusty floorboards. He can't breathe, he can't think. Until he's trying to suck in air that feels like it can't fit into his lungs. The sound that comes out of him when he finally manages is strangled and terrified. It's not a sound he's ever made before on any of these missions. But he does as he calls his husband: ]
Leon. Leon!
