HOW TO PLAY
• Post with your character, canon, preferences, et al. • Others tag you with one or more symbols from the list below. • You write a starter using the requested soulmate trope.
💬 — WRITTEN WORDS. A sentence, a name, or the first words they'll ever say have been on your skin longer than you can remember. Then somebody says them.
⏳ — COUNTDOWN. The numbers have been ticking down your whole life. They just hit zero.
🎨 — TRUE COLORS. The world has always been grey. Somebody walks into view, and suddenly it isn't.
🧵 — RED STRING. A thread only you can see is tied to your hand. Somebody is at the other end.
🩹 — SHARED WOUNDS. Bruises, cuts, and scars that aren't yours keep appearing on your body. A fresh one gives you something to go on.
✍️ — SKIN WRITING. Anything written on your skin appears on theirs. One day, somebody writes back.

Alvis wasn't the only one tasked with the care and keeping of Grandmama, arguably the oldest tree in the forest, a massive tower of a tree, crown head and shoulders above the rest of the trunks around her, and her own trunk so big that she could support the whole arboreal village on her own, though mostly she just held the heart of it, and the rest sprawled into the sturdy arching branches of the trees around in so many concentric circles and crookedly-branching paths, following the natural lines of those tree branches and trunks that supported the platforms and bridges between dwellings.
How any of the residents arrived varied, though any one of them would say they'd been called there in one way or another, and while most of the people in the city over the hill -where they went for supplies once a month- regarded them as a bunch of charming eccentrics, there were a few -both in the village itself and in the city- who remembered when they'd been wild radicals, though that had been decades before, well before Alvis' time there.
For the third time in as many nights, Alvis jolted awake from a dream, briefly terrified at the sound of the rain outside, convinced in those first few startled-alert but still-uncertain moments that it would be acidic enough to burn vegetation and flesh alike, his fingers crawling along his arm in search of comforting rows of scars that were no longer -and had never actually been- there. Knowing full well that he wasn't likely to get back to sleep and would only frustrate himself trying, he decided to go for a walk, swinging on his cloak -a saffron yellow hooded thing that he'd found in the secondhand bins on the last supply run, one that had felt familiar in a way he couldn't pin down- and picking up a flashlight, making sure it had actually gotten a charge before the storm rolled in.
He debated for a moment before turning to head inward, towards the gathering hall, since it would be time to start on breakfast soon enough, and even though he didn't have breakfast duty, another pair of hands rarely went unappreciated. He did pause at a lookout point, tilting his head up into the rain, as if he needed the reminder that it was just water.
