It was another one of those feelings Hannibal had, that immaculate intuition than sent him looking for Matt despite the protests and the declarations that he didn't want Hannibal on the rooftops of Hell's Kitchen. Intellectual he knew it was to protect Hannibal, but that was sans the knowledge the other man had on him, that he was quite the predator and the hunter at any given moment.

This time was different, bodies were broken and strewn all over the place and Matt's was one of those bodies. His Matt, the possessive part of him that pathologically pursued him with the tenacity of a harpy even though his words and actions presented him as the snow-white Caladrius bird of myth. In his own mind this was unacceptable.

It was that possession that allowed something ugly to open inside of him at the sight of that descending blow. A cold and ancient violence that objected absolutely to the idea of Matthew Murdock being taken from him.

Matt wasn't defenseless, but he was prone, too vulnerable to stop one very lucky assailant among the many that stood last. The brutal intention carried in the arc of a weapon descending toward a defenseless angle of neck and spine. He saw Matthew half-turned, balance compromised for the briefest fraction of a second, blood already darkening the collar of his shirt. Vulnerable was not a sentimental word he'd use to describe Matt at this time.

But mortal was appropriate.

Hannibal moved before thought fully articulated itself. One hand seized the assailant beneath the jaw while the other anchored the crown of the skull with almost tender precision. There is artistry in understanding exactly how much force the body can endure before it ceases to belong to itself. This was the kind of subterfuge Hannibal engaged in, he was smoke, silent and unobtrusive to anyone else but Matt.

The neck broke with a muffled crack.

Not severed. Not destroyed. Merely interrupted.

The man collapsed instantly, weapon clattering uselessly across concrete as his limbs spasmed in confused rebellion against the sudden silence between brain and body. Consciousness remained behind his eyes, Hannibal made certain of that as death might have been a mercy. Mercy was exquisite when it was carefully limited.

His heart rate retuned to normal, unmoved by the strangled sob through lungs that still functioned well enough to sustain suffering of the man who's body lay broken behind him. Hannibal only had eyes for Matt and didn't spare a backward glance, hands already at work to put a stopper on the worst of Matt's injuries.

"You need to open your eyes, kohanyi," his voice was the same hypnotic, droning sound with that even tone he always had, but it was insistent, "consciousness is going to be much harder this time, but I need you to be present."

It was one of Kuro's headlining shows, and the band was about 75% through their set. Everything had been going well. VIP had sold out. Everyone was on point. The crowd was hanging onto every note.

Jay was front and center on the stage. The others were sneaking some much-needed water while he played his violin solo. The softer melody meant a quieter crowd, which made it easier to notice trouble on the left side of the pit.

It was a murmuring at first. A couple concerned, "hey, are you all right?" when someone struggled to stay on their feet. But the murmurs got louder. Questions turned to shaking and shouting. Jay looked over in time to see someone land in someone else's arms, and his bow scratched.

He knew a medical emergency when he saw one, and instinct just kicked in.

Before anyone else on stage realized what was going on, The Mystic was climbing off the stage, leaving his violin behind.
