What's happened isn't that, thankfully. All things considered, given how much astrophage they're currently experimenting with, it may as well be a miracle that the explosion wasn't much, much worse. It had been relatively contained, scorching about half of a hangar but not actually threatening the structural integrity of the carrier itself.
(Stratt had ordered as many of the hangars as possible be reinforced, as well.)
An explosion is still an explosion, though, and Stratt had been front and center to observe that particular experiment — an attempt to speed up the breeding process because it's still going slower than any of them would like.
Due to that, she'd been caught in the blast, as had a few other officers and scientists.
At the time, Grace had been in a training session with Yáo, Ilyukhina, and DuBois. It's the only reason he hadn't been present too.
Her injures could be worse. She's suffered some burns and some internal hemorrhaging, but there's a full hospital ward on the carrier and she'd had the best of the best to get her stable. She hasn't woken up yet, but everyone assures him that she will in time. Her labs are getting better with each passing hour, and none of her organs have suffered any serious injury.
Really, she wouldn't want him here. She'd want him working just as hard in her absence, if not harder, to pick up the slack of her being out of commission. It's why Grace currently has a notebook open in his lap, revising lesson plans for the astronauts. For some reason everyone here seems to think he's her second-in-command and it just...
It makes him feel like he should be here, at least when he has a couple free hours that haven't already been assigned to other tasks. (Stratt's given him as full of a schedule as she can, of course.)
He taps the pen against the page. He's trying to focus, but the words keep blurring together. He sighs, leaning back in the creaky fold-up chair they gave him, and chews absently on the back end of his pen.
Then he sees Stratt's eyelids begin to flutter. ]
