They never yell, they never fight, but they had been riding the waves of unencumbered bliss for a month. Something had to give. The parting words were simple and peppered with regret. Worse yet, Kip hadn't kissed him back before he left. Not because he hadn't wanted to but because the kiss Scott had placed against his forehead had been so painfully tender that the mere thought of it brought tears to his eyes even now.

Scott had left for practice, leaving Kip in an apartment that felt simultaneously empty and about to overflow. The air was thick with his own doubt, making it almost palpable. It was suffocating and everything within told him to throw on his jacket and take a walk to clear his head, but he couldn't move. All he could do was sit on the couch where he collapsed after the door closed all too quietly and scrub at his face with a hand. Maybe that was the worst part, knowing that even when Scott was bothered he was composed because he had to be for his team. He couldn't go into a practice with any baggage because it would ruin the team dynamic and sour the progress already made.

He had well over an hour to stew in his guilt, to look at his phone where he had typed out an apology and deleted it at least half a dozen times over the last half an hour. It was so stupid, but he doesn't want to apologize over a text, it was impersonal and he wanted to look him in the eye. The argument wasn't even worth the words that were shared between the two of them, Scott had just been concerned about the extra shifts he was picking up lately. He bit off more than he could chew and was visibly exhausted to the point where he nodded off in the middle of Scott talking to him this morning even after their shower.

I was a total idiot. Deleted.

They never even raised their voices, and they might have been able to talk through it had Scott not been forced to leave. In the grand scheme of things, it was such a miniscule complaint that it shouldn't have even been given life. It was almost comical that sleep was the furthest thought from his mind right now, he couldn't sleep if he tried. He was more alert now than he had been for the last couple of days. Kip had so much time to think about it that by the time the practice ends he's convinced himself that this will be the last time. He was doing just fine paying off his loan monthly, the extra money wasn't worth having to stomach a feeling like this again. He loved him more than he needed to get ahead in life. All of this because he was too stubborn to accept monetary help.

So, when he heard the familiar jiggle of the door's handle, he stood up so quickly that he cracked his knee on the coffee table, swore loudly, and pressed his lips together to swallow the ache that came with the incessant throbbing while gripping at the arm of the couch. If he wasn't awake before he was now. With eyes full of emotion he managed to get out a one-word greeting. )

[ In truth, Scott had been a mess at practice. As hard as he had tried to be the captain he was supposed to be, the regret he felt from their argument had bled over into his performance, and the guys had all been worried about what was wrong, and he hated how badly was doing.

For everyone.

He hadn't meant to get on Kip's case. While he wishes Kip would let him take care of him more, he understands Kip's need to handle his own business, a feeing he knows all too well. But he had seen the toll that taking all those extra shifts was taking on him, and he was worried.

But maybe he was being too much. Too intense, as always. He didn't want to seem controlling or making Kip feel like he was telling him what to do. And throughout all of practice he could only worry what Kip was thinking after he has to leave instead of working things out.

Cold uncertainty squeezed at his chest the entire ride home, and when he arrives back to their apartment he half-expects to find it empty. So when he sees Kip, he's surprised for a moment, before he visibly relaxes, relieved the Kip is still here. ]
