The Door to Another World

It wasn't there yesterday. You're sure of it. A door where no door should be; in the back of your closet, at the end of an alley, in the middle of a field, plastered over with wallpaper that someone's already started peeling back. It doesn't match the architecture. It hums, faintly. It smells like somewhere else.
You open it. And you're not in your world anymore, or maybe your world just got a visitor it never asked for.
HOW TO PLAY • Post a top-level with your character, their world/setting, and preferences. • Specify whether your character is the one who opened the door and stumbled elsewhere, or the one whose world just got a door and someone's about to walk through it. • Reply to others: one of you is the visitor. The other is the visited. • Play with tone: wonder, horror, comedy, romance. A door doesn't care about genre. |
1. CLOSET DOOR ✧ They were just reaching for a jacket. Instead, their hand found cold air, strange light, and someone staring back at them from the other side.
3. THE PAINTED DOOR ✧ There’s been a painted a door on that wall for years, you never thought much about it. Except today it’s changed. The door is open and there's a stranger standing in the frame. You might not know who they are, but now you both have a choice to make. Erase the painting and close the door forever, or maybe embrace this new connection.
4. EMERGENCY ✧ They're running from something, pursuers, a disaster, the end of their world. They throw open the first door they see. It shouldn't have led to someone else's kitchen. Seriously, just who is this person that just popped into your home!?
5. THE RECURRING DOOR ✧ You've been seeing the same impossible door your whole life. You always convinced yourself it wasn't real. Today, at your lowest, or best, they finally turn the handle. Someone's on the other side and somehow they’ve been expecting this. Who knows, perhaps they were seeing the same door as well and it was all fate that connected your worlds.
6. MIRROR DOOR ✧ They touch the mirror and their hand goes through. The world on the other side is similar, but wrong. A dark reflection. Or a better one. Someone's living in it. And now both of you have to work together to navigate this dark and backwards reflection of the familiar.
7. THE SUMMONING ✧ Not all doors are physical. They were trying to summon something, a demon, a god, a pizza delivery. They got a person instead, stepping through a door of smoke and chalk lines with absolutely no context.
8. BASEMENT ✧ You hear something downstairs in the basement. It’s coming from behind a door you’ve never noticed before. Someone's been down there a while. They're not a monster. Probably. Will you let them out? Or, perhaps, you’re the one that’s found yourself trapped in this dark, strange space.
9. HOTEL HALLWAY ✧ That door you just stepped through has led you here, a non-descript hotel hallway. It’s empty and quiet. With multiple doors and hallways. Some lead nowhere, some to kitchens and other amenities. There’s no one in sight, and that door you came through? Yeah, when you open it there’s only a hotel room now. Luckily you don’t seem to be quite so alone as another door opens up! Hopefully it’s someone friendly.
10. KEEP THE DOOR OPEN ✧ The door only stays open under certain conditions, at midnight, during a storm, while someone holds it from either side. Now you have to decide: keep it open and risk everything, or let it close forever.
11. CLOSE IT BEHIND YOU ✧ They didn't close the door. Now something from their world has followed them through into your own. Now it's spreading and it's hungry.
12 THE DOOR IN YOUR DREAMS ✧ You’ve been dreaming of it and nothing of it for quite sometime. An empty space, an abstract or familiar location. But an unfamiliar door that’s been calling you to open it. And should you do so then on the other side there’s someone else. Another person’s dream, their thoughts, memories, and emotions.
13. WILDCARD ✧ Man screw these prompts, I do what I want! Come up with your own scenarios, your own reactions! Let the doorway of your imagination run wild!

SETTING: Welcome to space opera baby! Maybe it's a seedy alien bar where you pop in just as a blaster fight breaks out, or step out into a space ship in the midst of a heated battle, or maybe it's a less life-or-death but no less intense gaming session between the crew. Regardless, there probably something intense happening.

(pre-mcu) asgard - step into an incredibly bright and airy room, with ceiling arching high overhead and decorated with gorgeous frescos and intricate knotwork. the room is packed full of tall, elegant bookcases, mostly written in what would look like midgardians as runes but scattered with a number of languages. the nearest person is stuck in the seat of a soaring window between the stacks, curled around a book and swaddled in the folds of a long cape.
victorian tarot parlour - step into a dark and dusky room, cramped and quiet and absolutely stuffed with "occult" items. the muffled sounds of people chatting and moving and clinking glasses can be heard from somewhere beyond the room. the chairs and couches of the parlour are entirely overstuffed and the wooden furniture is all draped with a clash of dark patterned fabrics. the center of the room is a large but rickety table, the neat stack of a tarot deck alone in the middle of the inky tablecloth. (the nearest person is probably behind you.) ]

...right?
Maybe it's the door to your office at work. A classroom, a bedroom, any number of thresholds you cross every day.
Or maybe it's unsettling.
Maybe it's set into the base of a tree.
Or in the middle of the street, seeming to hang midair by invisible strings.
Wherever it is.
Whatever it looks like.
The door is yours, and yours alone.
Run along, dear, you'll be late.
Oh, yes, very late, indeed.
I suppose that must make you The White Rabbit...
[Oh... that laugh. It's awful. Just an absolutely dreadful noise, really. Almost as if music could be a headache.]
Terribly sorry about the abrupt scenery change; we know you were expecting your usual coffee shop (or wherever you may have been expecting, or not at all), but The Universe had different plans for you! A small room off a smaller waiting room, a communicating door with a transom between them. The office has mustard colored wallpaper and old wainscoting covered in tick marks from striking matches. His desk, an inlaid almost-antique, is loosely covered in papers, books, an ashtray, a pen set, typewriter, and a heavy plastic rotary phone. File cabinets line the back wall and a tall window opens onto the tarred roof of the sandwich shop three floors below. A ceiling fan churns overhead, and a calendar featuring Rembrandt hangs directly across from his desk. It pronounces the year 1939.]]
