Let's have a fight
This was the third attempt at this potion today so far; Granger had messed the previous two up by doing things too by the book. Drat, did she do things too by the book sometimes. For such an intelligent witch, she could be amazingly rigid in her way of approaching things. Potions required thinking outside the box.
It most certainly didn't help that Severus was feeling uptight about this... thing that was going on between them. He'd been feeling increasingly uptight about it over the past couple of weeks; scared, even. Convinced Granger was going to get sick of him. And he was sure she would. As a matter of fact, he was already somewhat convinced she already had. After all, why would someone like Granger want to be with someone like him? He was expecting her to turn around at any minute and casually say she'd had enough of him, goodbye, she wanted someone much younger than he. The thought frankly horrified him and filled him with a sense of bitter rejection that he had no true reason to justify feeling.
"For Merlin's sake, Granger!" Severus angrily snapped as he watched her start chopping the Nux Myristica leaves instead of breaking and twisting them to release the juice - something he'd told her to do, despite the book indicating to chop them. "How many times do we have to do this potion before you get it right?"

She wasn't entirely sure what it was, exactly, but there was something, admid the heat and humidity of the study, that was shredding their nerves to tatters and making them both snappy and a little more irritable than usual - and that's saying a lot, given both their predispositions to irritability. They were both frustrated, tired and somewhat out of sync with one another - and, of course, her budding feelings for her new (new?) teacher were an entirely new problem that her mind kept dwelling on.
Honestly, Hermione was sick of the tension, she was sick of not knowing where she stood and she was sick of having these feelings that had no real outlet. It kept her mind distracted from the work she was trying to do - most potions she could do without paying attention to the book, but the things Severus was teaching her required a little more concentration than that - not that she was complaining. She took great pleasure in the extra dedication the work took and that was why her drifting mind was such a bother. She wanted to focus on learning, not on whether or not Severus Snape liked the way she had done her hair that morning - as if it mattered. The potion fumes ruined any effort she made anyway.
His scolding made her jump, dropping her knife as she whirled around to face him, furious. "Maybe if someone wasn't breathing down my neck like a Dragon with a cold I might be able to concentrate more, Severus Snape!" She crossed her arms, glaring at him - she doesn't care if he's her teacher, Master, whatever, she has the right to speak up for herself. "I understand that you're trying to educate me but you're hovering!"

He leaned in, towering over her; deliberately attempting to intimidate her. "Perhaps that's because the last two times I set you to task, you failed miserably," he replied icily. "I don't care to have to instruct you to restart all over again."

Frustrated, Hermione began to gather the ingredients and set them to one side, cleaning up a little so she could begin again. If she was lucky, she wouldn't have to start entirely from scratch - she's used to the routine for the foundation of this particular potion, sadly. She ignores his shadow behind her, staring blankly at the page for a moment before she takes a deep breath, starting once more.

The way Granger turned back to what she was doing, dismissing him, made him bristle. He watched the back of her head and looked down at the way she was puttering about, fussing, always damn well fussing, and the irritation in him increased several notches.
The words that came out of his mouth next were as unthinkingly revealing about his feelings as they were deliberately spiteful towards her: "Perhaps you're not as invested in this as you claim to be. Perhaps you don't wish to do this anymore."

"You're giving me far too little credit," she hisses, taking a moment to redo her hair to keep it out of her face. "If I didn't want to be here you know very well I would have left already! I don't waste my time on things that I have no intention on finishing! This is not some kind of obligation for me!"
Swallowing her pride, Hermione rubs her eyes and takes a deep, calming breath, trying not to explode. Severus was right, she had been off today, and it was entirely her fault. That didn't forgive his snippy behaviour, but it gave him a small out. "I want to be here. I want to learn, and I am enjoying myself. Today has been a particularly bad day but that doesn't mean I want to pack up and quit."
