Metropolis is so boring, Ilya thinks. Not even any halfway decent clubs, and the ones they do have close so early they’re not worth the effort to go to; there are pretty women to meet at the bars and he’s hardly ever recognized, which can be a good or bad thing (also so not a hockey town), but they’re so low-key, and half the time they’re having poetry slams or whatever, so again he’s just not convinced there’s any point. The most exciting thing this town has going for it is monster attacks, which, frankly, if Ilya’s seen one he’s seen enough.

He would rather not have even seen the one, in fact.

Even the streets are quiet as he walks along, looking at his phone and not paying much attention to where he’s going. Tempted to call this night quits and go back to his hotel room, probably text for a while before falling asleep with his phone facedown on his chest. But he looks up when he finds himself in front of a Denny’s. Remembers his teammates talking about this when they had to take a stupid bus through stupid Pennsylvania one time after their plane had mechanical issues for five hours. The best food you can get on the road, supposedly; the best kind of food to load up after a game. And he is pretty fucking hungry.

The door chimes as he walks in, taking off a pair of sunglasses he probably didn’t need to bother with. The hostess starts to offer him a table near the windows, but his gaze is already going to a familiar face. Okay, this is not who he expected to meet up with at this very late hour. Tonight’s starting to look up after all.

“Oh, thank you, I am meeting her,” he tells the hostess, smiling, before making his way over to Lois Lane’s booth.

It’s easy to see the exhaustion in her face, the way she’s staring forward so blankly he’s not even sure she sees him coming over. Ilya stops near and leans over slightly, with a wave of his hand in the space above the table. “You are sleeping with your eyes open? Or actually awake?”

[ a broad shouldered blond slips into the booth across from the doctor, deliberately inelegant in the way he tosses himself onto the cheap pleather. artfully tousled beach waves, streaks of glitter down his face smeared with sooty mascara stains under the dark sunglasses he's wearing inside at night for some reason; not subtle at all to his occupation, if the scent of cigarette smoke and too sweet alcohol on his person wasn't obvious enough.

the wait staff seem to be in a titter, talking quietly to themselves in small pairs behind the counter. lestat for his part, doesn't pay them any mind. instead setting his elbows on the sticky tabletop and leaning forward, sunglasses lowering to reveal piercing pale blue eyes alight with some veiled mania. ]

Denny's is a perfect place to refuel and research and Sam is clearly posted up for the night. He's eaten a ridiculously large salad, finished his juice and is probably on his second pot of bad coffee, drinking it like it's penance.]

[ Usually when she meets men in a kind of impulsive and unwise decision after a certain hour, she at least knows who she's looking for, although she's feeling a similar sense that this night too will be accompanied by a kind of abstract dissatisfaction with her choices, the state of the world, and men on the whole.

Things she knows: he's got one leg, widower, and he's an emergency medicine doctor. All of those things on paper paint a pretty fucked up picture of the man Shen is sending out to her. She's not sure if she should be impressed or insulted that he managed to pin down her unique scramble of trauma.

Whatever. She's hungry and pulling weird hours. She's here at 2AM as promised because he also works nights, but not this night. No, Shen is covering solo tonight, and she's within walking distance to the ED so she can go give him grief right away depending on how this goes.

The place isn't packed, but it's not empty either. Furiosa takes a seat at the counter all the way at the end, so her back is to the kitchen rather than doors (another bit of her paranoid idiosyncrasies that always likes to have eyes on the main artery of entrance and exit).

She probably should've asked for more physical description than "missing a leg." Her prosthetic is pretty obvious, her fingers making a little chime each time she lifts her coffee cup. For some reason, it didn't occur to her how much harder it'd be to clock behind pants, although it's obvious in retrospect. She's attempting to subtly eye various men's gaits over the rim of her coffee cup. ]

[Hell Denny's is everything that Denny's is... but worse. The staff doesn't want to be there, the diners are only there because there's very little else open for food at two in the morning, and sometimes it feels like the atmosphere itself doesn't even want to be there.

The TV is blasting 666 News, Katie on a tear about something or another that probably isn't even accurate.

Husk is at a corner booth, nursing a cup of coffee and trying not to get a hangover. Why is he there instead of the Hotel? Who knows. Maybe he just needed a change of scenery.]
