Thanks to the ministrations of the Scouts and an AU of his beloved cat, he doesn't remember what happened before. Nothing about them, who they were, what they looked like, or how desperately he was trying to deter the Homeworld.

He doesn't recognize Minako when he boards the train, or when he sits beside her. But he's had a long work day and all he's thinking about is going home and having some ice cream, and curling up under the covers after a blissfully warm bath. It's so nice to be off work.

He's not even noticing how sleepy the train makes him, he's aware of the danger of drowsing on them. They're so comfortable and pleasant. He's just sitting there beside her, idly scrolling through the panda tag on Instagram, looking at adorable cuddly creatures as his eyelids are starting to droop,

[ it's been a long trek from liyue to mondstadt, and dan heng is tired.

he may be a young for an adeptus, but he is still old enough to have known varka for a long, long time now, as dan heng often plays liaison between the two nations whenever it is necessary, so he has worked with varka many times over the long years. having met him back when he was still cavalry captain, before taking over the full mantle of the leader of the knights of favonius, dan heng has enjoyed the view as he's grown into the role.

more than that, though, they are friends. it's difficult not to be friends with a man like varka, whose uproarious laugh is infectious, whose smile is warmer than a bonfire. he's charismatic and funny, making friends and allies wherever he goes. even dan heng, distant as he might be, was not immune to his charm.

but this is not a business trip. dan heng isn't here as an ally this time, he's here as a friend, invited to attend windblume for the first time in many years, given that varka has been away from mondstadt for a long time, now. they'd met at the border, varka personally escorting dan heng to the city himself, and halfway through the ride dan heng finds himself dozing, the rocking of the carriage enough to make him feel sleepy, after a long few days of traveling.

his head bobs, his shoulders sway, and soon enough he's slumped against varka's side, head on his shoulder, out like a light. ]
