( Hands on hips and brow furrowed, Phryne stares rather crossly through the threshold of - what should be - the downstairs lounge. It should be, because she's already done a thorough circuit of this floor, and this is where the lounge was then. She's certain of it. She has a sharp mind for these sorts of details; infamously so.

And yet. This would now appear to be...an abandoned broom closet of sorts.

With a tut of frustration she spins on heel, eyes narrowed against the gloom pervading the old house's interior, and searches for - anything, really. A door she'd somehow missed; a break in the dust that would suggest someone other than her had moved by, manipulating mechanisms or something of the sort. Nothing stands out. A chill draft echoes along the hall, which is impressive considering the sweltering heat outside, and her rouge-red lips twist into a put-upon frown. )

I'm missing something, ( she mutters for her own ears, the act of confirmation aloud helpful in cementing facts and theories. The closet gets a harder stare, a closer inspection under the sharp cut of a flashlight's gaze as Phryne illuminates every dusted, cobwebbed corner, incorrigibly suspicious. Much of whatever was stored in here has since be pilfered or rotted to time; even the shelving is utterly dilapidated. Cautiously she steps further within, wary of treacherous floorboards. One ancient hand-broom still clings to use, and Phryne grasps it with a gloved hand, beginning to work away at the grime on the floor, on the walls. A trick hinge, she thinks, or a hidden latch. Some alcove into the walls. There must be something, and she's never met a magic trick she couldn't crack. )

[It was supposed to be a double-feature. A room in the guest house of a ranch near enough to the Louisiana bayou to be haunted. The ranch had horses to ride, and nearby cemeteries dating back to the early 1800s to take tours in.

Maria had been somewhat exasperated when Ashe had handed over her phone with the confirmation of a week's vacation to the ranch, but the thought of riding horses again had been nostalgic enough to keep her grumbling to a minimum. Sometimes she really did miss the old days of just... horseback riding.

And it guaranteed to be haunted!

... Right.

The first day had been fine enough; they'd gone to the stablehands and fetched a couple of the horses made for guest usage, and wandered out through the nearby forests and swamps for a few hours before the saddles rubbed a little too hard the wrong way and they decided to return to the ranch.

Maria sighs as she opens the door to the guest house. Nothing looks all that different until she steps into the bedroom. It looked like someone had put her suitcase up on the bed, rifled through it, and then knocked it off the bed in a hurry.

[The House of Lamentation is VERY fucking haunted. By demons. Literally. It also has occasional portals to its human counterpart, which certainly doesn't ease up on the surrounding villagers' JUSTIFIABLE fears and rumors of all the fighting between the eldest brother and the rest of the house's inhabitants. Did he murder them all and they continue to fight it out even in death? Who can say?]

[It definitely does not help that the first Demon King: the nightbringer cursed the lands it's on to oblivion. It really does not.]

[Sometimes (often) there's actual ghosts too, because a house of 7 demons tends to unleash them on accident on an almost bi-monthly basis, and after centuries, it adds up.]

[The structure that was there before they teleported the cursed haunted mansion; used to rearrange all its rooms nightly. This helps Lucifer do a lot of crazy magic with the building structure, fusing it with the human-dwelling, so he can get away with doing more magic with less work, adding entire rooms, hiding some, obfuscating others, expanding many, adding things like windows in rooms that make no logical sense for it.]

[And then there's the actual crypt in the basement guarded by a literal hellhound with 3 heads, aptly named "Cerberus."]

[It's like the WORST/BEST escape room ever. Including random passages that even Lucifer doesn't know all of.]

[Don't mind the skull sconces in the hallway, they don't bite. The Avatar of Gluttony does though -- don't get eaten. Welcome to Hell. Literally. For what it's worth, it's basically Hell-lite at least.]
