[ The apartment is quiet in the peculiar way of post-Joining mornings: no televisions blaring, no neighbor’s music leaking through the walls, only the soft infrastructure of a building settling—pipes ticking, a refrigerator cycling, distant traffic that never quite thickens into a rush. Even the light seems altered, flatter at the edges, as if the world has been sanded down and re-varnished with different rules. Any sound she makes will resonate through the house, the neighbourhood, maybe the entire world. Traveling and traveling to no end.

She washes her hands for longer than she needs to. The water runs hot, then hotter, and she watches it bead and slide over her knuckles. The immunity in her is a fact she can’t feel directly, only infer from the way the Others look at her. Like a door that doesn’t lock when everything else has been bolted shut. Like a resource. Like a hazard.

Well, nothing new, being an odd woman who can't be believed. She's old hand at it, really. And the world is a better jail than Arkham. She dries her hands on a towel that smells faintly of detergent and old lemon. The smell doesn’t belong to her, which makes it safer, somehow. Sofia opens the refrigerator and takes inventory without thinking: eggs, butter, bread, a jar of jam, a carton of milk. She sets a pan on the stove and turns the knob until blue flame appears. It’s a controlled thing, fire made obedient. She can work with obedient.

Eggs first. She cracks them into a bowl one-handed, a clean snap, no hesitation. She adds salt, pepper, then hesitates with the spice rack, fingers hovering. Paprika. A little red dust that blooms against yellow. Bread goes into the toaster. The lever clicks down; the sound is too loud in the quiet. Sofia’s shoulders tense and then release, a reflex that never fully leaves her. She watches the toaster like it might betray her, like heat might become something else when she isn’t looking.

Butter hits the pan and softens into a glossy puddle, then foams. The smell is immediate and grounding—fat, warmth, simplicity. Sofia tips the eggs in and listens to the low hiss. She stirs with a spatula, drawing the curds in slow folds, keeping them soft. She is careful with timing, as if tenderness is a procedure.

She plates them neatly. Toast pops up, startling in its cheerfulness. She cuts it diagonally with a sharp knife, the blade whispering through crust. Coffee next. She measures grounds with the steadiness of habit, though she can’t remember when the habit began. In Gotham, coffee was often a tool—wakefulness, edge, a way to keep moving. Here it’s something closer to an anchor. The machine sputters and gurgles, filling the kitchen with bitter fragrance. She grabs the mugs.

With two plates balanced in her hands, she steps out of the kitchen. The bedroom is dimmer, shadows pooling in corners that the morning hasn’t reached. The air carries that faint metallic aftertaste again—something the Joining left behind, not quite smell, not quite memory. Sofia sets one plate on the coffee table, then the second a measured distance away, spacing like boundaries drawn with a ruler. She sets the mugs down beside them, handles still turned outward despite herself.

She sits on the edge of a chair rather than the bed, posture straight, ankles crossed with deliberate control. The room has too many angles and too many soft surfaces. Softness hides things. She keeps her hands visible, palms resting lightly against her thighs until she decides what to do with them. ]
