[absurdities]

Hurt/comfort is a fan fiction genre that involves the physical pain or emotional distress of one character, who is cared for by another character. The injury, sickness or other kind of hurt allows an exploration of the characters and their relationship.

1. INJURY. You've been injured. Broken bones or bleeding out or maybe just a tiny little papercut. The choice is yours.
2. SICKNESS. You're sick and laid up in bed, at home or in a hospital. The severity is up to you.
3. FEAR/ANXIETY. Something is happening and you're scared beyond belief.
4. LOSS OF SENSES. Sight, touch, taste, hearing, smell, etc. You've lost some important sense or ability and now you're left to deal with it.
5. DESPAIR. Nothing is good or right anymore and you can't shake the depression. Maybe that friend of yours can help though...
6. BREAKUP. You've been dumped. You need someone to comfort you, possibly by the one who dumped you.
7. MAKE UP. Fight or break up, it's time to makeup.
8. RESCUED. You've just been held captive and/or tortured for however long and finally, someone has come to the rescue.
9. BAD ROMANCE. Fight, cheated on, abused, whatever the case is, someone else can clearly see you need comfort from someone who isn't your terrible lover tonight.
10. LOSS. You've experience a loss of some kind and need help getting through it.
11. INSANITY. You're seeing things that aren't really there, hearing voices, or you're just convinced you're at your wit's end finally and you're going to crack. Maybe someone can give you a helping hand.
12. TIRED. You've had a heard life recently and you're just worn too thin to really care anymore. There's no fight left in you anymore. Can someone help change your mind?
13. ADDICTION. Drugs, alcohol, sex, gambling, or any other type of addiction has got you in its grasp. First time or relapse. Will someone be able to save you?
14. INSOMNIA. You can't sleep anymore, no matter how hard you try. Maybe someone can give you company.
15. NIGHTMARES. Or, on the other end of the spectrum, you can't sleep without gruesome, horrible nightmares. Either someone is stuck in your dream with you, witnessing it or they're just waking you up, soothing you out of it.
16. BLACKMAIL. You've been caught doing something you shouldn't and you were blackmailed because of it
17. SEPARATION. You're going to be separated for awhile or were separated for a long time. Either make up for lost time or try to spend every last moment together.
18. VIOLATED. You've been violated in some way. Can include sexual overtones or not. Can someone help you through it?
19. STRANDED. You've been stranded somewhere remote, with no help of anyone finding you for awhile. Can you survive this together?
20. SINS. You're feeling the weight of your sins and guilt clearer than ever. Can someone give you absolution or lessen the ache any?
21. SECRET. It's difficult having to keep that secret of yours, be it a relationship or something you just don't want to share with anybody else. Maybe it's okay to talk about it now though...
22. ADDITION. Babies should be joyous things unless you're in a situation where you know you won't be able to care for them. Either you've adopted or found out you're pregnant.

[For being such close friends, there was a lot of things Jimmy didn't know about Heloise. It wasn't for lack of honesty, she was more open with him than she was with anyone else. ... About most things, anyway.
It was because, in reality, there was very little Heloise actually knew about herself. At least, about her past.
Normally, it didn't bother her that she lacked any recollection before somehow arriving in Miseryville, what felt like years ago yet she couldn't even recall how long it had actually been, then being hired by Misery Inc. when Lucius recognized her genius. Yet lately, she found herself quite distracted by it for some reason...
Maybe because Jimmy, despite being in a very similar situation to her, at least had some vague recollection of his life before Miseryville. Jimmy knew he was from somewhere else, even if he couldn't remember where. But he remembered it had snow, among other things Miseryville didn't. Heloise didn't even know if she had always been in Miseryville, or came here from somewhere else as well. She felt like she belonged here, and yet...
It began to affect her productivity, which her boss noticed. At first she claimed everything was fine, although Lucius would repeatedly ask her what was wrong. Of course she wasn't going to tell him. Problem was you'd have to be blind and stupid not to realize it was causing a serious downturn in her inventions, and Lucius wasn't either, despite how much Heloise liked to think so.
Eventually he all but demanded she tell him what was going on, and now with little other choice in the matter, she finally did.
What was strange was that afterwards, she actually had to wait for a reaction from Lucius.
She expected him to immediately laugh at her, mock her or something. Say something like "That's it? A little amnesia? Get over it, Heloise!"
Instead, for several moments, he just stood there silent, looking thoughtful. As if contemplating an incredibly important decision.
Before finally, asking her in the most serious tone she'd ever heard...
"Do you want to know?"

As they say, be careful what you wish for.

The fact it's the middle of the night doesn't stop Heloise from running to Jimmy's house, then frantically knocking on his door.
She's trembling, badly...
And doing everything in her power not to completely break down and collapse into tears right at his doorstep.]

[For his own part, Party remembers his own mother like a ghost. A few good feeling buried under years of fear and medication, and (later) drugs and alcohol and too much sun have bleached her memory right. But he remembers caring after she was gone.

[After the funeral, that memory is the only thing he has to relate to Brad. The thing is, Brad's mom cared. Brad's mom has been around his whole life till now. Brad's family did the whole holidays, meals, sugar cookies and vacations thing that is apparently real life--they were a real family, and Brad is real messed up about it. Party loved her too, but--well, it's clearly not the same.

[So he understands, but he doesn't understand. The listlessness and snapping, the moping, the not-eating, not-anything. He knows it's warranted and right and allowed, but it's not what he moved in with. There's fear in his heart more than sadness, fear that this is what they are now. One man in despair and the other left alone.

[Like right now: three in the morning, Party wakes up by himself in bed. He can hear the TV, see the cold light of it in the hall. Not the first time it's happened since the funeral, but the first time in a few days that Party pushes himself up. He drags the blanket with him, wound tight around his shoulders, as he shuffles out to the living room.] B?

[Ryan's not the sort to ever get much sleep. He stays up working most nights, sleeping is something he considers a waste of time. Perhaps that's why he's always been teetering on the brink of insanity. This, though... this is the first time he hasn't been able to fall asleep when trying for it. Yesterday he'd been brought a failed subject to terminate - generally not something he has trouble with, but it was a newborn baby girl, one born from another live subject.

He can hear her screaming every time he tries to close his eyes.

Oh, he can rationalize it away. He knows the kid wouldn't have survived, and if she did she would have been a monstrosity. Still, he believes in giving all life a chance. Snuffing one out like that doesn't sit well with him. He wanders aimlessly along the road leading to the town nearest the complex, seriously considering getting a drink.]

[A sigh escapes Naruto's pouting lips as he picks up the adhesive pad from the first aid kit, unceremoniously sticking it onto Sai's cheek. There, he helped. Why did he have to do it anyway, he wasn't the medic on the team. Perhaps it was because their medic was the one to dish out the injuries in the first place.]

This is your fault, y'know. [A more detailed look would show that Naruto appeared to have a matching injury on his own face. Fist-sized, by the looks of it.]

[They were stationed in front of a small fire she'd managed to make in the damp cave with Gaara laying on his back, and Maka switching off between checking his fever and using soul perception to keep watch on the cave entrance. The blizzard didn't seem to be letting up any so it didn't seem like they'd be having company anytime soon. It was always nice to be out of the 'cells' they lived in in facility one, but this facility three trip was very quickly beginning to worry her with its temperamental weather.

With a sigh she returned her gaze from the door back to Gaara, and she made her way over to check his temperature once more.]
