Hydra have, or had, a lot of bases. Like a comical amount. Shutting those down becomes an ongoing project. A big enough project for both an Avenger and a disgraced shadow agency. Coulson's SHIELD needs to make sure none of those splintered Hydra factions find their feet, otherwise their goal of building back closer to SHIELD's founding principles is shot from the outset.

They rarely cross paths. Actually, SHIELD has devoted some resources to making sure they don't. They use some trite Minor or Major League analogy that Melinda doesn't care about. Baseball is Phil's thing and not hers.

The arctic base Steve Rogers just single-handedly decommissioned has some elaborate self-destruct procedure. It cracks in two and begins to bury itself under an artificially-generated avalanche. From an aerial view, it almost looks like a diving submarine. A handful of aircraft slid off the roof of the facility and disappeared into a widening crevasse in the ice.

Steve almost gets buried down there too. It wouldn't be the first time. At the last second for dramatic tension, a quinjet drops into view ahead of him with the ramp already lowered. It's a big jump, but one he can easily make.

Melinda's known for extractions and has a great sense of timing. That's not why they call her the Cavalry, though it sure doesn't hurt. She can tell he made it in. The weight and impact of his landing registers on the flight instruments. "Steve," she says levelly from the pilot's seat, not looking back.

She doesn't say anything else or leave the controls until they're at 30,000 feet. After a few quick adjustments to the onboard computer, she lets the autopilot take over and removes her headset. Up and off the chair.

He's not one of her kids. He's not a kid at all; older than he looks. She's still coming for him with disappointed mom energy. "What the hell was your exit strategy?"

By the time she makes it back there, Steve's standing up with the shield leaning against the jet wall beside him, gloves off, helmet off, hair spiked from it, but upright and definitely in one piece.

"My exit strategy is trusting my people." One of them, and certainly one of the best of them, being her.

He's not upset by the question, in either the offended way or the chagrined one.
