Ah, rain—the precipitation that the whole world has a love/hate affair with. It waters the garden for free and ruins baseball games. It cools you off in the summer and it causes more ice and sleet to appear in the winter. Sometimes it is lovely and falls at a decent pace for a few hours, other times, it blasts the whole eastern seaboard away.

Poems and songs have been written about it, people have danced in it, others have cursed its entire existence, and still more refuse to go out and drive in it.

Now it’s time to roll some dice and see what the weather will have in store for you today.

1. DRIZZLE ☂ It’s not too heavy or too light of a downpour, just enough to wash away stuff in the air, water the ground, and clean up the streets.

2. MONSOON ☂ It’s horrible and awful! Rain is coming down in buckets, no one can get anywhere, the wind is whipping everything about, and now the cable is out.

3. SHOWER ☂ Reminds you of early spring, doesn’t it? A nice shower to make everything all green and smell fresh again. Lovely.

4. FLOOD ☂ While rain is good, it can sometimes be bad. Grab a boat!

5. CATS & DOGS ☂ You’re lucky with this one. It’s not the worst storm in the world, but it’s still pretty heavy. Be careful when driving!

1. A DARK, STORMY NIGHT ☂ You know all those stories that start off with a stormy night before something goes wrong: a murder, an attack by ninjas, a crime. It is one of the best known clichés in the world, and you’re stuck in the middle of it.

2. HUMIDITY ☂ It’s that time of the year again when the humidity rises and the rain has two options: make it worse or make it go away. Good luck getting the latter.

3. GRAY RAIN OF DEPRESSION ☂ We all know this one. Stuck in the middle of no where, or right after an argument, or something that leads to angst, the rain decides to express someone’s feelings in a physical form, serious or over the top.

4. QUIET MORNING ☂ Nothing to do, nowhere to be… sometimes the rain is a welcomed addition to a quiet day. Gives you an excuse to stay in, curl up in a warm blanket and a book, maybe a loved one or a cup of hot chocolate. With sprinkles.

5. PUDDLES ☂ After it rains, what is the number one thing you have to do? Go put on some rubber boots and splash around of course!

6. SUDDEN STORM ☂ It might have been predicted, but sometimes storms just sweep in and do their thing with little to no warning. Hope you’re not outside.

7. THUNDER & LIGHTNING ☂ Loud, surprising, scary, ominous, comforting, fantastic to watch or listen to… some like thunder and lightning, others not so much. Of course, if this happens before a big confrontation, the universe is telling you something.

8. CAN’T GET WORSE ☂ You did not say that. You did not just say that. How many times does this need to be seen in movies and books before anyone learns?

9. STUCK ☂ No, no, no, no. This cannot be happening. What happened to the ten percent chance of rain? You forgot your umbrella and now you’re stuck in it!

10. RUINED PLANS ☂ You had all these wonderful plans to go outside, have some fun in the sunshine, do some errands, maybe a date… and the weather goes against them.

11. DANCING ☂ Sometimes rain is a cause for celebration, or you just feel like doing something spontaneous. Grab someone to join you and get wet!

12. RAIN BATTLE ☂ The most intense, important battles happen in the rain. Verbal spars, punching someone in the guts; it’s all dramatic and climatic. And no one slips.

13. DATE ☂ Aww, don’t let the weather ruin your date! It can be really romantic, being out in the rain, and it’s always fun to go with the flow.

14. A DAY INSIDE ☂ Sometimes, it’s just better to stay inside and enjoy something simple and easy like board games or catching up on TV shows, or maybe the bills.

[As a child of the desert, the novelty of constant rain was still new to her, and so Sibylla had found herself wandering the countryside and suddenly under the onslaught. She had let out a shocked laugh and darted for the nearest enclosure, a nearby cave. Once safely inside, the former queen wrung out part of her cloak before taking her hood off, exposing hair that had finally started to grow back. It just brushed her high cheekbones now, though the curls hid how long it truly was coiled like they were.

Silhouetted by the daytime storm, she lingers at the mouth of the cave but turns her gaze inward. Balian had warned her of animals—especially large ones—that also used such caves as homes. But she saw no outward signs, not even of humans, but there were footprints, heavy ones, leading inward yet not outward. Perhaps there's an exit further in? Or a network of caves? Such things weren't unusual in the desert, after all, the more temperate climates couldn't be much different.

Cautiously she calls out:] Hello? If anyone is there, I am sorry to intrude. I shall be gone as soon as the rain is done.

[ The rain comes in sheets, a grey curtain drawn across the world. Rhaena stands at the casement, her fingers resting light on the stone sill, and watches water sluice down the ancient walls. Behind her, somewhere in the warmth of the chamber, is Margaery.

They are meant to be keeping each other company, two young, well bred women making pleasant conversation. Now so unfortunately trapped inside by weather. It is the sort of thing Rhaena is known for—her grace, her courtesy, her perfect manners. The beautiful, demure princess. The consolation prize.

She should turn. She should smile. She should be what she has made herself: gracious, attentive, the princess who compensates for her lack of fire with an abundance of courtesy.

She remains at the window.

The glass is cool beneath her palm. She presses harder, feels the slight give of the leading between the panes. Luke died in a storm like this. The thought arrives unbidden, as it always does when the sky turns grey and violent. Her betrothed—though she had kissed him only once, chastely, as their families looked on, strained by the circumstance of them becoming half siblings at the combined funeral and wedding of her father and Rhaenyra —torn from the sky above Storm's End. She had been told to weep prettily at the funeral. She had obliged, furious at the act of war, at the further stripping of her relevancy. Jace is still alive, after all, and Baela's. Baela, who will become Queen of the Seven Kingdoms as Jace's concert. And she, again, nothing.

What she hadn't said, what she tells no one: she envies Luke.

Luke had been kind to her, as well as you'd be kind to someone who you'd known from birth, family intertwined. Perhaps they would have been content together. Now she'll be given to someone else, eventually, another political arrangement that requires a beautiful, biddable princess who won't outshine anyone because she hasn't the means to shine at all.

The thunder rolls, distant. She wonders if Aemond flew in weather like this, if he felt anything as Vhagar's jaws closed on Arrax. If there was triumph in it, or merely the sick necessity of war.

The shame of it burns hotter than any dragon's breath she'll never command. Luke had died as a Targaryen should—in the air, on dragonback, facing an enemy. Aemond had murdered him, yes, but there was a terrible glory in it nonetheless. A story that would be sung. A death that mattered.

The wind outside sounds like dragon wings, but it is only water flung hard enough to bruise stone. She cannot even die that way—sky-split, wind-scoured—because no beast will answer her call. She is a Targaryen without furnace, a candle pretending to be a comet.

If she died, it would be in childbed, most like. Or of a fever. Or simply of being forgotten, a name in a genealogy, beautiful and useless and utterly earthbound.

Rhaena can feel the expectation in the silence, the contract she is breaking by remaining turned away. At court they call her demure. They mean she knows her place. But she is seventeen and her betrothed is dead and his dragon still flies—everyone's dragon still flies while she prays without ceasing for her egg to hatch—and she is trapped in this solar being polite.

She makes herself turn from the window, angling her face back towards Margaery. It won't do for her to neglect her manners further. The firelight catches in her silver hair, and she schools herself to be a proper Targaryen princess, all grace and composure. ]

Forgive me, [ she says, and her voice is steady. ] I am poor company. The storm. It reminds me.

[ She doesn't finish the sentence. No woman is a daughter of a great house without skill in manner and subterfuge, even those like Rhaenyra or her own sister Baela who flout the rules, and especially not Margaery Tyrell. The Tyrells rule the Reach, fending off the grasping clutches of the overmighty beneath them (and isn't there something to be said in both their houses' need to manage overmighty Reach houses getting ideas above their station?) and no Great House controls without bringing their daughter up to skill. Rhaena keeps her hands loose at her sides, though she wants to clench them. Even her grief must be performed correctly.

Daemon, her father, loves her. She believes this, most days. But Daemon Targaryen's love flows like dragonsfire—toward those who command the sky, who answer flame with flame. Baela has Moondancer. Baela, her twin, her mirror, her opposite. Baela who sits a dragon as though she were born astride one. Perhaps she was. Perhaps Rhaena emerged second from their mother's womb and found all the fire already taken, already burning in her sister's blood. Her stepmother has Syrax. Even her baby half-brothers will have dragons before their voices break. And she has—what? Needlework. Court manners. The ability to sit through a storm and make conversation.

She'll never know that feeling. That power. That consequence. And for all her lack of a dragon, surely no one would think the only daughter of the Lord of the Reach lacks consequence.

Rhaena looks back to the window again, watching the sky tear itself apart.]

Tell me more about your gardens,[ she says, hastily. She has been silent too long. Besides, this sort of talk is what is expected. Because she is dutiful. Because she has learned, these seventeen years, that there is no point in wanting what you cannot have. ] Highgarden is so famed for them. Will this weather not be harm them?
