Morning comes softly, which is unfair.

Romance is awake before it does anything dramatic - there's no headache, no remnants of a hangover, no immediate shame. There's only the slow, dawning awareness of weight beside him, of warmth that hasn't yet shifted away.

Mira. The hunter who came after him in all her wild, beautiful rage, swinging her Gok-do at his face, aiming to kill, but never quite delivering the blow that would send him back to the demon realm to face Gwi-Ma's wrath.

He doesn't move at first, only watches as sunlight creeps through the cracked curtain, spilling over her bare shoulder. Her breathing is even, body tangled in the sheets like she belongs there with him.

This is bad. This is very, very bad - for both of them.

Were he any other demon, full of malice and cruelty and rage, he would simply kill her and be done with it. It's the goal, the one they've been working towards, isn't it? End the hunters for good, shatter the honmoon completely to allow their king to feast and maybe, just maybe...buy himself a little bit of peace topside.

He should kill her.

He doesn't.

His gaze swings up, studying the ceiling, tracing over the cracks with his eyes as he remembers the previous night in vivid detail. Heat, urgency, sharp nails raking down his back, the way she moved like she was still half in a fight. Maybe they were. She’d come at him angry, electric, alive in a way that made something old and dangerous in him wake up and stretch.

She shifts beside him, and his gaze snaps back to her, every muscle in his body tensing. He sits, lets the sheets slip from his shoulders and chest, deliberately hiding his right hand as fingertips sharpen into claws - just in case she attacks.

"Good morning," he murmurs quietly, gently, as if his hand isn't already half a weapon.

[ It wasn't how he imagined it. In the dozen, hundred scenarios Lasulahn Lavellan had imagined over and over in the slow, perilous trek from the Hunterhorn Mountains to the Frostbacks, waking up curled in the arms of his First was not among them. He had once, of course - when they were young and the world seemed softer, even for Dalish mages like them. But a decade separates that time which seems now like a dream. Lasulahn remembers only that it is real for it kept him sane in the series of waking nightmares that followed.

So Lasulahn had prepared for anger, for betrayal, for disgust. He had prepared for Inquisitor Lavellan to turn him away without even seeing him. Only at his most hopeful had Lasulahn dared think Hadis might not only hear him out, but forgive him, be glad to see him. The beautiful, fragile thing that once bloomed between them, though? That was surely gone like so much ash.

Hadis looks older than Lasulahn remembers, but then, Lasulahn is aware he too, is changed. The years of travel and solitude, of grief and of exploring ruins infested with demons and Creators only knew what else, have worn on him. There are lines in what was once a soft face, scars across his too-thin body. But in the bright of the morning sun, sharing warmth buried beneath furs, Lasulahn is grateful that, even if it took him far too long, he did finally return to his clansmate.

For a while, he only watches as the other sleeps. Idle, he reaches out to gently pluck a stray tress of hair behind one pointed ear. ]
