[The chill of the morning stirs him from his slumber and makes him snuggle closer to the body next to him, seeking comfort and warmth. There's some sense of rightness in it all. A strange calm that he hasn't felt in too many years now.

But then he blinks, awake and startled, realising that this is not the state of mind he usually is in. He sees Flins next to him and memories flood his mind.

Maybe it was the drink he had that made him gather up the courage, but it all started from a kiss. One, then another. A gentle touch, a slow burning fire, a search for warmth and respite from the tiring journey and the cold night, from the loneliness spreading like a black hole in his heart.

It all turned into passionate, yet tender feeling that he couldn't name, maybe afraid to give it a name in the first place. Is this love? What a scary idea. He can't deny that Flins grew dear to him. Close to his heart. He's been seeking his companionship during the quiet nights, sharing stories and observing the flames of the lantern.

It's raining outside, and the sound wakes Edward up.

It takes him a few moments to place it; he can tell it's water, but his first thought is that a water pump broke, and he nearly springs out of bed, ready to get to work to fix it lest the Vault flood. Then he remembers where he is, and pieces together what he knows and what he's learned so far: on the surface, water falls from the sky sometimes; this is called rain; when rain hits surfaces, it makes a variety of different sounds, most of which he's still having to learn; he's somewhere sheltered, so he won't get wet; thus, he can settle down and listen to the raindrops on the roof, making their little pitter patter noise.

And it's for the best, because Edward is very reluctant to leave the bed, and the person he's curled in against. He rearranges his head against Danse's shoulder and stretches an arm across his chest. Danse is so broad, so much bigger and heavier than anyone from Edward's Vault, and Edward wishes he could have seen him, even once. Still, learning about him through his hands hasn't been all bad.

Parts of it have been positively thrilling.

Edward toys with the hair on Danse's chest, running his fingers through it before letting his hand come to rest over Danse's heart. He can feel the slow, strong thud of it through his palm, and that makes him reposition himself, getting his head closer so he can listen to it.
