I have a little dreidel
I made it in my mind,
An imaginary dreidel
Is the hardest one to find!


WHAT TO DO:

OPTIONS:

1. Fry-up: Traditional foods for Hanukkah include latkes--savory potato pancakes served with applesauce or sour cream--and sufganiyot, jelly doughnuts. That said, there's nothing to stop you from frying tempura or a whole chicken for the holiday, as long as you're frying in oil!

2. Menorah: Lighting the menorah is an important part of Hanukkah; it represents the eternal light remaining lit and is a symbol for hope in (what is in the Northern Hemisphere) the darkest part of the year. What type of menorah do you have? How much of a fire hazard are your charaters?

3. Dreidel: The game of dreidel is a little like baby's first introduction to gambling. For those not familiar, the rules can be found here. How competitive are you as you play?

4. Presents: While they're not part of Hanukkah traditionally, presents have become commonplace, in large part due to the proximity of Christmas. Some families do one smaller present each night, some just do one present, and some don't do it at all.

5. Singing: Hanukkah songs are a mixed bag, from the more modern "Light One Candle" to "Maoz Tzur" (Rock of Ages) and Ocho Kandelikas (Eight Candles, sung in Ladino). And of course, coming up with new verses for the Dreidel Song is an improv competition in its own right.

Joe couldn't tell you when he learned the rules for this game. Like the penny ante crap games played against front stoops, the knowledge seems to have entered through osmosis, though it's tinged with the shadowy image of a long forgotten elder spinning the little top beside a bowl of raisins.

Tonight Joe has traded down from his usual high stakes gambling to playing for matchsticks. He sits with a scotch and soda at his elbow and spins the dreidel with a quick motion of his tanned fingers. It twirls and then plinks down on shin and he tosses another match into the fingerbowl at the center of the table before handing the little wooden top over.

I'm sure you'll be fine!

Angel, meanwhile, is learning the game for the first time. His face is heavy and studious, and he seems to be taking everything very seriously as he spins the dreidel. Religion has no answers for his existence, at least that he's found so far, but he's drawn to it like a cat to a space heater, basking in the periphery until invited in more explicitly.

The dreidel lands on nun, so he simply offers it back.

"It's kind of a slow game, isn't it?"

[He looks suspiciously from Meredith to the donut as if expecting this to be part of some sort of trick to get his guard down. The same sort of air wouldn't be out of place in a stray dog being offered a scrap of meat by a kind animal lover. And very much like the dog he resembles, Dex swiftly snatches the donut away and then retreats back a few steps. He doesn't bite into just yet, eyes still on Meredith.]

We're celebrating the miracle of a small jug of oil lasting for eight nights in the eternal light. And that means eating food fried in oil. Jelly donuts are traditional, along with potato pancakes, but I am taking requests for Friday--fry-day for more outlandish picks.

For today? Donuts. Happy Hanukkah.

[Having done the explaining thing, she grabs herself one of the donuts as well, lifting it in a bit of a toast.]
