[ Metropolis is very blue.

Lots of things are blue, Peter's noticed. Hard not to, when it's the only color he can reliably identify. Everything else is muted grey, awaiting the day his soulmate unlocks the rest of them. Peter doesn't mind blue as his starter color - it has to be better than the brown his soulmate is stuck with, matching the boring color of his own eyes. Blue is the color of the water, the sky; it's rich and it's pretty, and Metropolis' really is that perfect clear color, the one New York only gets on lucky summer days.

Peter's bus jerks to a stop, and he quickly pulls his gaze away from the window, joining the wash of people exiting onto the street. A glance at his beat-up watch tells him he's running later than he thought; unfortunately, the big blue sky dotted with lazy white clouds will simply have to wait, as Peter ducks his head and darts through the crowd, aiming for the big, brass orb-topped building.

Peter wasn't originally going to agree to this assignment, a favor for Jonah. Why would he do a favor for Jonah, particularly one that takes him outside of New York? But the pay is above minimum wage rather than below it, for once; it seems Peter's reputation for getting impossible superhero photos has preceded him, and Mr. White for the Daily Planet called to see if Jonah would be willing to lend his fantastic staff photographer for a week, to get some action shots of Metropolis' friendly neighborhood alien, Superman. Superman posed for photos, of course - the guy sat down for interviews all the time with Planet reporters, apparently - but their editor was looking for more of an action shot akin to the ones Peter's name was plastered all over for Spiderman. Jonah was only too happy to volunteer Peter's services, in exchange for an IOU in the future.

Peter's also not staff, but of course, Jonah glossed over that part.

And in truth, he could do with the money. Life in the city is not particularly cheap, especially when you're spending a quarter of your budget on chemicals to make webbing and craft store spandex. So Peter agreed, even if he felt a little uneasy leaving New York. He never really has, not for more than an overnight in Jersey - and definitely not since becoming Spiderman.

Oh jeez, he's late!

Peter fumbles with his messenger bag as he slides into the rotating door, trying to free his portfolio from the confines. He exits quickly, still messing with the bag; his senses zing as someone breezes past him, chattering rapidfire into their phone - he sidesteps to avoid their barreling path, stumbling when he bumps into someone else. Of course, because his bad luck is all but biblical at this point (and his messenger bag was hanging on by a thread, because of course it is, why replace a bag when he can sew the strap back together himself?), that bump sends his crap all over the floor.

Ah, great. His portfolio is finally free, scattered across the tile. What's probably more pressing is the hot coffee he can feel seeping into the arm of his shirt, a grey smear down the front of this person's crisp white shirt. ]

Oh, God, I'm so sorry! [ Peter's already apologizing, mouth running away from him, frazzled, too focused on the absolute scene he's causing to look up at the innocent victim his luck has claimed right alongside him. He pulls a handful of crumpled napkins from his listing bag, automatically moving to press them against the spilt coffee on the guy's shirt (oh, that was for sure going to stain, had he just spilled a full, fresh cup?) ] Are you okay? Did it burn you? Crap, crap, crap I've totally ruined your shirt - I can get you another cup of coffee, uh, and maybe some baking soda? I'm so, so sorry, I should have been watching where I was -

[ Peter looks up, finally, wrinkled napkins soaked through with fragrant coffee, brown meeting clear, vibrant blue, and the world around him bursts into color. He can't even process all of it in his periphery, shocked into stillness and just staring, openly. ] ...going.

When Bolaire had first gained conscious thought the world had been in greyscale...that is until he saw a flash of red and a body drop. He had no idea what it meant but he had to run. He couldn't be on the field any more. He had to get away before someone took him from this body and put him away again.

He wouldn't be put away again.

He didn't want to be put away. He didn't want to sleep again!

And wasn't that a thought, a weapon who had wants and desires beyond what he had been made for.

Now ten years later his world is still in color and he hasn't told a soul. After all what did it matter? A weapon, "alive" or not does not have a soul so therefore could never have a soulmate. Right?

Instead he sat in the warm light of a tavern fire with a glass of wine resting beside him as he listened to the other three talk. Blue gems constantly drawn to the youngest there with his fire shock of hair and eyes that reminded Bolaire of the first sunrise he had seen. They're beautiful and he's sure that if he had Hal's talent for poetry and theatrics Bolaire could write sonnets about the beauty of those eyes. But sadly that is not his forte so instead he sits and he watches and he listens.

Eventually Hal has to leave to take care of his children and Murray has work at the Pentavral so it is just Azune and Bolaire in comfortable silence.
