Space Opera refers to works set in a spacefaring civilization, usually set in the far future or A Long Time Ago, in a Galaxy Far Far Away.... Technology is ubiquitous and secondary to the story. Space opera has an epic character to it: the universe is big, there are usually many sprawling civilizations and empires, there are political conflicts and intrigue.
1. Slice of Spacefaring Life
It's life, but on a spaceship! An interstellar journey could take hundreds of years, so you have some time to relax and take it easy. Do a little aeroponic gardening, enjoy stargazing from the bar, or immerse yourself in studying the latest nebula you're passing through.
2. R&R
After being cooped up for days, weeks, or years, you and the crew are finally sliding into the nearest space station, colony, or commercial hub for a little break. Enjoy shopping, restaurants, and resorts!
3. Space Piracy
You're a bit of a rogue, but you like the independent life cruising among the stars and taking whatever you can find. It's only a crime if you get caught, right?
4. Space Military
Perhaps you're on the opposite end of the spectrum, and you prefer tight-laced uniforms and adherence to regulation. Enjoy political intrigue, internal and external strife, morally dubious empire building, and mecha battles!
5. Sleeper Ship
You're on a very long journey, so long that most if not all of the crew have been put on ice for the trip. Whether by accident or design, you're awake - is anyone else up?
6. Emergency!
Something has gone wrong! Your colony is under attack, or maybe the hull of your ship has been blown out by a passing asteroid. Can you repair the warp drive in time?!
7. Arrival
At long last, solid ground! Get out there, it's a brand new (or new to you) planet or colony to explore! Maybe even a new species to meet or civilization to study. You're not wearing a red shirt, are you?
8. Intergalactic Bar
Your standard hive of scum and villainy.
9. Space Brothel
What it says on the tin. Get your xeno on!
10. Wildcard
Anything goes!

Riots and protests had broken out across the planet, and the ruling council of the empire had already started threatening to cut the planet off from the gate system, marooning it in the galaxy without any connection at all to trade and civilization. They'd done it before, when resistance levels on a planet grew high enough to become a liability, and one planet needed to be made into an example for all the others. But they wouldn't do it while the heir of the empire was still on that planet, missing somewhere and being sought by the revolutionaries.
They probably wouldn't do it. Gojo really hoped they wouldn't do it. He wasn't irreplaceable, but it took time to engineer and raise a new heir with the genetic code to control their ancient technology. Most of the children produced by the process went screaming insane well before they reached maturity. And the emperor was already old. If he died without a capable heir to keep the gate systems powered, all the planets in the galaxy would be cut off.
So Gojo had sent a desperate coded message to the best pilot he knew. He'd still been in the academy when Gojo had done his military and combat training, and even if Gojo wasn't sure they'd ever been friends, he hoped he could trust Nanami Kento. He also didn't have a lot of choices.
The meeting place he indicated was a quiet, run-down tavern in a quiet, run-down part of town, and three of Gojo's students lingered in the main room of the tavern, waiting until Nanami arrived and then taking him into the back to meet Gojo. They were actual university students, budding revolutionaries, and Gojo had taken them under his wing and made them his allies and protégés.
When they brought Nanami into the room, Gojo grinned and stood, coming over to greet him with his usual shameless cockiness. "So, do you still owe me a favor?"

He was never patriotic or anything as asinine as that. He was just seeking a comfortable life, one where he wouldn't have to work too hard and could maybe, help people a little. But at the time, it didn't seem like working for the empire would get him that. Which means off he went, on his lonesome, to find his own path. He worked odd jobs here and there, as crew on other ships for a while, until he saved up enough money to buy his own ship. From there he was able to get better jobs, higher paying gigs, and more trustworthy contacts. He never did anything under the table, never anything illegal, but it took a while to build his reputation into someone good and trustworthy. Now, he reached that point, where he could pick his work and could maintain a strict schedule where he didn't need to be break his back for more credits.
It started making him think about taking a vacation. Some beach planet or something. That would be nice, right?
Of course, then he got the message from Satoru Gojo. On one hand, he was sorely tempted to ignore it. What in the world did the man need from him after years and years? He kept Gojo's contact because... well, he did have a soft spot for him and he was a little worried about the pressure the empire was putting on their heir even back when he was a student. But he never thought he'd actually reach out for help.
There was only a grimace when he realized where exactly he'd have to go to find Gojo. Fucking of course he was involved with a revolution. God damnit.
Still, he's here and he didn't skip out on Gojo. There's a frown when Gojo greets him, his eyes flicking over to those students of his before back to Gojo. He's not sure he trusts, well, any of this but here he is anyway.
"Maybe," Nanami replies, neutral. "Depends on the size of it."

Not actually waiting for an answer, he tipped a hand in the direction of his students, finger outstretched to point, even while his eyes stayed on Nanami. "Megumi, take this one."
One of the students, a boy with spiky dark hair, rolled his eyes aggressively, but he lifted his chin to answer. "If the revolutionaries catch you, they'll kill you as an emblem of the empire, or they'll try and ransom you. In either case--if the empire knows you're dead, or if the empire gets you back under their control, then they're likely to shut down the gate system and maroon this planet from the rest of the galaxy, as punishment to the population for their revolution, like they've done to other worlds that have put up too much resistance. Or, worse, they might unleash their worst firepower to raze the planet's population."
Nodding his approval of this correct answer, Gojo kept studying Nanami's face, unnaturally blue eyes sharp over the edge of his dark glasses. "As long as they think there's a chance I'm still on this planet, gone to ground and hidden, then they won't be able to take drastic action against the populace. If I stay on the planet, that creates the greatest likelihood of me eventually getting found. If I'm going to get off-world without being noticed, right now in the chaos is my best chance. And you're the only pilot I know who might be able to pull it off."

But shit, what a hell of a situation he's gotten himself into. There's no going back if he accepts this job, even if he's discreet about it and parts ways with Gojo right after he gets him off planet, there's still the chance it's traced back to him and he gets... a reputation. He doesn't want to be a revolutionary, he never has.
Yet, here Gojo is asking him for help and he really, really, really can't find it in him to say no. His eyes close for a moment and he sighs, hands tucking further into the pockets of his jacket as he slumps in on himself for half a second before straightening up again. Fine.
"Okay. Four passengers?" Gojo and the three students. He's just trying to make sure he knows what's what. "Also, I need to refuel."
So, they can't leave right away. If Nanami is going to pull this off, he needs a full tank of gas for his ship. There's no telling how long they'll be until they hit another fueling station or planet once they get off planet.

"I've got money. I'll transfer you the credits for the fuel and your fee for the job." No need for a deposit, he knows he can trust Nanami. He'll pay the full fare up front, and be extremely generous about it. He needs enough to be able to establish himself elsewhere, but Gojo has a dozen accounts secreted away throughout the galaxy, so he has no worry about running out of funds. But money is no good to him if he's dead.
"We're in your hands. Just tell me when and where and what you need from me in the interim, aside from the money. Megumi here is a hacker, if we need to access any systems, and Nobara is a sharpshooter. If we do end up in any fights, we'll want her on the ship's guns." He doesn't offer any commentary on Yuji's skill set.
Gojo's leg bounces a little, restless and ready to run. He's antsy to get off this planet, and he hates that he has to rely on someone else rather than being the one to do the protecting.
