It depends, but for a child, the most important thing for them is that they can trust you.

Trust that you'll apply the rules fairly, trust that you'll be there for them, trust you'll help them follow their heart. Which means showing care.

For children, every moment seems far longer than for someone older. It's a much larger fraction of their life. A missed day could seem inconsequential or at worst a minor disappointment to you, but for them, it can feel like a betrayal.
