but even that hardest of hearts unhardened suddenly when he saw her there: persephone in her mother’s garden, sun on her shoulders, wind in her hair, the smell of flowers she held in her hand and the pollen that fell from her fingertips. and suddenly, hades was only a man with a taste of nectar upon his lips To live your life in darkness is no easy task. Evil may be just a point of view - one you may not ascribe to yourself - but a black heart or a ruthless mind is hardly quieted. While you don't regret what you've done, at least not outwardly, you do wonder if there isn't something more. Grey morality has discolored your world. That is, until you see them. They are beautiful, pure, good: everything that you are not. You should be annoyed or at least ambivalent to their presence; after all, they serve you no purpose, promise you no gain. But oddly enough, you are drawn to them, and not even in hopes to destroy or corrupt. No, you want to have them, to keep them with you. What to do with this newfound feeling? Act on it, of course. You've never let anything stop you before. What you don't realize (or perhaps do, you just don't exactly care) is that the object of your...affection may not be too keen on being taken what they see as prisoner. Yet you only have their best interests at heart! Still, you do care for them, in your own fashion, more than almost anyone else, so surely a deal can be struck... You just couldn't bear to lose them.

So, let's talk options.
1) Your character is the one in Rose's spot, on her way off to be married to this sharply-dressed monster. Are they on Titanic? On a different ship? On a train? Probably not in the back of a Winnebago, but otherwise, the sky's the limit here. Any time period works for me.
2) Your character is Cal's choice for a replacement bride post-film. He has absolutely not dealt in any way with the emotional fallout from what happened on that damned ship. Good luck to you!
3) Surprise me with something else. ]

I’d be down for 1, maybe set aboard a ship heading back to London as Rey would originally be from there? Happy to workshop other ideas. ]

What time period would be most fun for you? We could stick with 1912, go modern, or even bring Cal into Rey's universe and have the ship be a spaceship.
If we do 1912 or modern, Cal will want to ultimately take her back to the States. He's the son of a steel tycoon there, and has been raised since birth to take over the business. He just needs to obtain a suitable wife and bring her back with him. He could definitely take her to London first for an engagement gala there, however.
The "suitable wife" part is important, as he needs a woman with enough of a pedigree to help him move up the social ladder. He has more money than he could ever want, but he's keenly aware that, despite his upbringing, he's not exactly a true gentleman in the old money sense of the term. So, whatever background we want to use for Rey in an AU scenario, we'll want to make sure she brings that sense of being from the right family (or something equally compelling) to the table.
If we're talking Star Wars-verse, we have other things to scheme about lol.
Let me know what direction you're leaning, and we can take it from there! ]

After some thinking I figured out how Rey would be a “suitable” for Cal—her birth parents came from old money in London. When she was ten, they passed away and she was made to live with Luke Skywalker—a retired military man with notable wins under his belt and a family that has ties back to some of the more influential families. Luke doesn’t give a crap about that, preferring to be a hermit so when he’s out it’s a “big deal.”
Having Rey sort of forces Luke to be in society again so people try to get in his good graces due to his connections and money?
Could also throw it in that Rey was eventually adopted by Luke, thereby having ties to the “old world” (London from her family’s side) and the “new world” (the Skywalker name). I can see that her engagement to Cal would’ve been at the behest of her aunt Leia in order to keep the money/status “in the family” and the family line can’t merely end with Ben (Leia’s son) and Rey.
Happy to make adjustments and brainstorm further. ]

[ With effort, Caledon manages to give his fiancée and her maid an entire half hour to settle into her portion of their parlor suite before he comes to check on her. He doesn't want to rush her, or make her feel trapped. He has the rest of his life to see her whenever he pleases. He can grant her a little time to get comfortable first.
Still, it's hard to wait.
All his life, he's known that he was not to fall for anyone but his proper bride. Dalliances were fine, of course, but they could never amount to anything. He is a Hockley, the heir to the empire his father built from nothing, and with that comes certain responsibilities. His heart, and his name, have always been reserved for some mysterious future her, who would only be his when he had worked hard enough for long enough to deserve her.
And now here she is, just a few rooms away. With his ring on her finger and her fate promised to be bound with his. Rey Skywalker. Soon to be Rey Hockley. His bride. His reward. His future children's mother.
He has no idea what to make of her.
In truth, he's barely been allowed to speak with her in the few weeks he's known her, and he has certainly never been alone with her. All he really knows of her is that she's of a prestigious family – and he has seen the effect of her name quite clearly already, the way people's expressions change when they hear "Skywalker" – and that her aunt is one of the most regal women he has ever encountered. Of Rey herself, he knows next to nothing.
She is beautiful, obviously. She has eyes that suggest a certain spark. And she's young enough that he keenly feels the weight of his responsibility toward her. He is to be her protector, the man who leads her safely through a world he knows is not kind. And she, in turn, is to be his refuge, and the Queen at his side who will help him navigate the higher rungs of the ladder. But is she strong enough for that? Does she even want that? Or is she only here because the Hockley fortune caught her family's attention?
He wants answers to those questions, and a thousand more besides. Mostly, though, he just wants to sit with her in the privacy of a room with no chaperone, and allow the two of them to begin becoming comfortable with one another.
He can give her thirty minutes alone, to get used to the feeling of the ship beneath her. To put away her hat, and have her maid find a place for her gloves, and ensure that everything about the accommodations are up to her standards. (Though on a ship this luxurious, how could anything not be?) And, of course, to acclimate herself to the role she must inhabit, now that she is here and truly his.
But the moment his pocketwatch clicks past the half-hour mark, he is on the hunt.
He knocks softly at the edge of Rey's doorframe, but doesn't wait for permission to enter. She is his wife, after all, or as good as. He has every right to stride into the room as if he owns it, and to dismiss her maid with a glance.
To Rey herself, he offers a cordial but warm smile. ]
Settling in, Sweetpea?
no subject
[Rey surveyed her portion of the suite that would be her home for the next few nights. A voyage from America back to London was usually a long one, and the young woman brought at least a full trunk of books to keep her mind occupied and sharp. There were only so many things one could do to pass the time, and she preferred to keep to herself. Socializing among others of her rank was more of a battlefield than anything else.
A minefield of recalling names, positions in society, who they liked, who was at odds with another--a whole list of things to keep in mind while making small talk. Enemies could be made for offering the wrong tea, or smiling at the wrong person. Her Aunt Leia taught Rey as much. Men handed the wars of the world, but the battles women faced were within society itself--specifically in a ballroom and in making a fine wedding match. Because women were there to be pretty accessories on their husband's arm, run charities, and produce sons to carry on the family legacy.
It was tiring, truly. Many would think that with a high rank and money, one's freedom was all but secured. It couldn't be further from the truth. The higher up one was, the more restrictions there were. One would think getting engaged would grant a young lady more time to do as she pleased, but no. A marriage wasn't secured until the bride said 'I do' and carried a son to term. Only then was her position secured.
Rey had a ring on her finger, and now she was expected to....be smitten with a man she barely knew? Her father placated her by hosting an engagement party for them in London. One last hurrah before she walked down the aisle and tied herself to a rich heir. Any other woman would be happy with such a match, but the young woman was wary. A love match wasn't something she would expect to have, but Caledon...what was he like? Her Aunt refused to give her details, and all her father said was that he was a fine man...
She was marrying a complete stranger, and heaven help her if he started to comment on her figure or demanding to bed her that evening. Already she could feel a headache coming on, giving her gloves and hat to her maid. She was in the middle of taking off her earrings when she heard a knock--
Did he really just call her Sweetpea? No, no, she couldn't let her feelings come to the surface.]
Mister Hockley--[She paused, biting her tongue and took a quick breath. A bashful smile tugged at the corners of her lips.] Caledon. [Right, she should use his name as he was her fiancé.] I'm settling in well, thank you. The suite is perfect.
[Nothing was out of line. Everything was in it's proper place. Still...why was he here? Did he come to talk with her? Seek out her company and not see if he was sold fools gold?
There was a reason why Rey was sought after. A young woman with ties to the new world and old. A family name that would elevate anyone's status--assuming any suitor would be able to survive an evening with her. It wasn't she was cold by nature, no, she opened up around friends and family. She was like a cat in a sense, cautious and wary until her trust was earned.]
I was thinking of having tea soon, would you care to join me? [It would be the polite and British thing to do, especially as he paid for the suite. Heaven help her.]
no subject
An odd, tender warmth spread in his chest, and the look in his eyes softened. If this was how she would be as a wife, he had nothing to worry about.
He had been prepared to insist upon spending some time with her, but found there was no need. Perhaps she was as eager to get to know him as he was her? ]
I would, indeed.
[ His gaze moved over her features, every detail of her pleasing to him. My wife.
Yes, tea was fine, but now that he was finally alone with her, he had no intention of taking her right back out into the main areas of the ship again. There would be plenty of time to mix and mingle in the dining saloon later. For now, she was his, and only his. ]
Why don't I have something brought in for us? [ It did not sound particularly like a question. ] I imagine you must be tired, after all the excitement.
no subject
For now, she would do what was expected of her while keeping her true self hidden away. ]
Wonderful. [At least Rey sounded a little excited to have tea with him. Their suite had a sitting room, perfect to entertain people or in this case, learn more about each other.
Where Caledon wanted to spend time with Rey, she was the opposite. She wanted to keep him at an arm’s length and draw her own conclusions based on observations. Which, would be hard to do as she would be expected to be on his arm while they were out in public.
Still, the way he looked at her, as though he was appraising her value…it was annoying. And giving a statement in the guise of a question…lovely.]
Possibly… [ Rey let out a soft laugh, lifting both her hands to finish removing her earrings and setting them down on her vanity. ] Though, ‘overwhelmed’ would be a more suitable term, considering everything.
[ Going back home with a fiancee, a wedding to plan, and more things than she cared or wanted to do. Plus, the lovely addition of a headache budding between her eyes. She turned back to Caledon, continuing to wear a pleasant smile on her face.]
It would be best to have tea here. I can rest afterwards. [Or figure out a way out of her engagement—no, no, she had to behave and not succumb to such intrusive thoughts. ]
Is everything to your liking, Caledon? [The suite, the ship, her? Was he happy with his purchase?]
no subject
True, the docks had been noisy, and there had been all the commotion of boarding the ship and finding their way to the suite. And there were certainly a great number of trunks and whatnot to be dealt with. Plus, of course, the crowds of steerage passengers waiting in the immigration lines - a depressing sight for any lady to have to witness.
Still, Cal had done everything in his power to shield his bride from the worst of the chaos. Her job was simply to enjoy the journey and become comfortable being his. She didn't need to trouble herself with logistics or the like.
Had he overlooked something? Failed, in some way, to smooth the path for her? He didn't think so, but how could he be sure, when he knew so little of the girl or what would please or upset her?
Though it was entirely possible she meant overwhelmed in a good way...
Well. He would know her better soon enough, and would be better able to adjust details to suit her preferences. For now, the best thing was simply to enjoy being with her, and to learn as quickly as he could. ]
Everything is very much to my liking, yes. [ He let his gaze linger on her eyes for a moment, so that there could be no doubt that he was referring to her. A young woman would be anxious to know that her husband-to-be found her pleasing, surely. He would need to do what he could to reassure her.
Slowly, he closed the last remaining bit of distance between them, and allowed his voice to soften into a quieter, more intimate murmur. If something was bothering her, he wanted to give her the chance to tell him. ]
In what way are you feeling overwhelmed?
no subject
Part of her wondered if she should dare reach for the sharp flower shaped hair pin she had in her hair. It kept her brown locks up in a fanciful bun, but the hair decoration was sharp at the end. Luke Skywalker's methods of raising a child, a young lady no less, were...not the most conventional. Men, as kind and thoughtful as they could be, could also easily over power a young lady...
And, well, Leia had also taught her it was far more dangerous for a woman to be without a weapon in the presence of a man. Besides, it would wound their egos too much to be harmed by a hair stick.
Still, what was the best way answer Caledon's question? Never mind that fact his voice sent a pleasant shiver down Rey's spine.
A long quiet minute later, she finally came up with a suitable answer:]
This will be the last time I return home. [Rey began in equally soft tones, letting her mask fall ever so slightly.] I've gone on these trips, back and forth between the two countries, for years--either with my Father or with my cousin. There is a wedding to plan, and I am standing on the edge of leaving one life behind for a new one. [With a man she barely knew, only that he was wealthy and he was very pleased with her (mostly her appearance) so far.
Given what she stated, could he understand why she felt overwhelmed? If not, then there was also another reason. Putting her mask back on, Rey sheepishly looked away from him.]
I didn’t eat much this morning either. I wasn’t sure if the sea would be rough, and to avoid anything unpleasant, I had very little for breakfast. The lack of food could also be contributing to my current state.
[Yes, the bashful bride was too excited or nervous to eat. Clearly that would explain away everything.]
no subject
That subtle line of concern reappeared between his brows as he tried to understand what she was saying. Did she think he was going to spirit her away entirely? Lock her up in a gilded cage in Pennsylvania, to be cut off forever from everything she'd ever known before?
The wedding, however, and the change in life roles... Those things, he understood entirely. Of course this would be difficult for her, though hardly unexpected. She was a lady. She must have known since birth that her path would eventually wind in this direction.
Still. She was young, and knowing that one would be expected to do something someday was rather different than actually being at the precipice of it and jumping. She might have been prepared in theory, but now here she was, and, well, yes, that might be hard...
Perhaps he should have taken her out to the house he'd had built, so that she would have a firmer sense of the life she was stepping into. He had trusted that she was prepared for the deal they had agreed upon, but perhaps he hadn't given enough weight to her age, or her sex, or her as-of-yet-unknown temperament. Perhaps she needed something more specific in mind, to help assuage her fears.
Though certainly being hungry was contributing to matters. That made sense. Her aunt or maid should have seen to it that she was better fed, before allowing her off on a journey.
Odd, how protective that thought made him feel of her. She was his now, and no one was going to allow his wife to wander about unfed and uncomfortable. If her maid couldn't be counted upon, he would find one who could. Simple as that.
His look of concern softened into something almost tender. He'd get the two of them some tea. Talk Rey through things. Soothe her nerves. That, at least, he knew how to do. ]
It certainly could. [ There was no judgment in it. If anything, her sheepishness only brought out more warmth from him. There was something pleasant about knowing she needed his care. ] I'll have them bring in a tray for us. Something mild. You'll feel better in no time at all.
And, Rey... [ And God, it felt good, saying her actual name. He offered a small smile, and successfully resisted the urge to reach out for her, to touch her in any way. That would need to wait until she'd been fed. ]
You can be back in England every year, if you like. [ Except during her confinements, of course, when the children began to arrive. But by and large. ] I hardly intend to hide you away from the world.
no subject
Caledon's words took Rey aback, making her blink in surprise. She wondered if this was another test of sorts. If she would be able to tell if her husband-to-be was telling her lies to placate her, or if it was the truth. She had heard tales of men changing once they had their brides--going from sweet, and caring to demanding children and leaving their wives at home. Honestly, the latter didn't sound so bad, it would give Rey the chance to do as she wished but Caledon...he wanted to climb the social ladder. To do that, he needed her. ]
I would very much like that. [She murmured, unable to stop herself from giving a small smile. Her mask slipping once more. Maybe she was judging him too harshly. It wasn't his fault that they barely knew each other. No, that was orchestrated by Leia. The woman was brilliant, and had she been born a man, would have been a commendable as a general. She was clever, sneaky and scary when she needed to be.] London in the fall is truly breathtaking. The cooler weather is perfect to enjoy the foliage of the season and there are very few social engagements.
[Meaning she could stay inside and be content with her own company. Besides there was hunting, which she was unsure if Caledon would want to partake in the activity. He probably would, men seemed to be drawn to the idea of hunting a creature and taking it for sport.
They were still so close to one another, it would be so easy to reach out and touch one another--which seemed so improper but it was what fiancés did, right? Hold hands, or show some form of affection. Did he want that? Heaven, if he tried to kiss her, she would pull away and do her best to not deck him. Ben said she had a good right hook. No, no, he wouldn't do anything untoward. She had to keep her thoughts from running wild.
There was one question that was burning in her mind since their engagement was announced. Now was as good of a time to ask as they were alone. ]
Caledon...[It was getting easier to say his name and not surname. Rey tilted her head to the side, watching him closely to see if he wore a mask as well.] Do you think a man and a woman can be happy together when they barely know one another?
no subject
So he could do something to please her. That was good to know. Taking her to London in the autumn would be challenging; summer was better for prolonged absences from the business. Even so, he was confident he could arrange it from time to time. And if her main interest in seeing the city in that season was that she would be able to avoid shirking any social duties, while also being at liberty to stroll about with him, that boded quite well for her mindset and priorities.
Perhaps he had found quite the treasure here, after all.
Her question only confirmed it for him further. ]
Well, I certainly hope so. [ His amusement crept into his tone, turning the words light and almost teasing. She was a sweet girl, wasn't she? Just nervous, and young. Both of which would be remedied in time. ]
Though I imagine we will know each other better, before our vows are said. [ Moving as slowly and gently as if he were approaching a wild animal, Cal reached out to brush a wisp of her hair back from her face. It was a far more intimate touch than he'd ever allowed himself with her before. ] I was hoping you would speak with me now, as a matter of fact.
no subject
If he was a man more focused on his status and wealth, or one that wanted to provide for his wife and family. If he would be faithful in his marriage or run off to another woman because his "needs" weren't being met.
She could hear her father's voice in her mind, telling her she was preparing for the worst rather than taking things a step at a time. To take a breath and trust that things would be fine. Cal seemed to think so, feeling brave enough to close the space between them to touch her.
Rey stilled as she resisted the urge to grab her hair pin, or shove Cal away from her. Her mask started to slip. First with her smile faltering and then by taking a small step back. If he was thinking of kissing her, he would be sorely disappointed.]
Truth be told, I was unsure of when to expect you. [Rey managed to say and not hiss. She cleared her throat and took another breath.] I know people travel differently--my father enjoys a good glass of brandy when he boards. My cousin prefers to find a lounge to smoke in. I was unsure if you were the same, or wanted to enjoy the ship before coming here.
[She let out a nervous, albeit forced chuckle to hold up the illusion she was a naïve girl. Finally alone with her fiancé with no chaperone in sight. Any young woman would be nervous--or in Rey's case, try to figure a way out of the situation.]
I was very surprised to see you so soon, and for a moment thought you were calling on someone else. [Sweet pea, who would provide such a silly nickname? Be nice, play nice.Rey told herself.] And I agree, it would be nice to know more about you before I walk down the aisle.
[She could hear china clinking and utensils moving around. Looking over Caledon's shoulder, she faintly saw a waiter rolling in a tea kettle, tea cups and other covered dishes.]
Shall we continue this conversation over tea?
no subject
So she didn't want his caresses. Not even on the cheek.
Cal's eyes darkened slightly, and his smile flattened back into a neutral line as he lowered his hand. It was possible, he told himself, that she was only withdrawing out of modesty, or some girlish fear... but her words put that hope out in a hurry.
One didn't need to be an expert in negotiation or strategy to hear what Miss Skywalker was truly saying: Why are you here? and I have serious reservations about this arrangement.
Nor did he fail to notice how eager she was to get out of this particular position with him. The instant the tea cart approached, she was ready to go, though any fool could see it would take a few minutes for things to be arranged.
Had she been forced into the marriage, he wondered? She'd seemed willing enough, when he was courting her. And who wouldn't be? He was offering her the world, in exchange for... What, exactly? A willingness to allow him to care for her for the rest of her life? Amenability toward the idea of raising her children in prosperity, and attending every worthwhile social event on the arm of a man who doted on her?
Hardly a poor bargain, for any woman.
He drew a thin breath and exhaled it, forcing a polite smile into place. ]
Of course.
[ He refrained from speaking to her again until all was arranged for tea, and they were seated and once again alone. Storm clouds were clearly forming in his thoughts, but his expression was civil enough. It would hardly do to antagonize her, or to go assuming the worst. She was, he reminded himself, tired and hungry, not to mention nervous and young. Perhaps he had just startled her. Flustered her. That was possible, wasn't it?
So, once he had a teacup in hand, and his bride-to-be clearly had what she needed, Caledon tried again. ]
Why don't you tell me about London? Your London, that is. I imagine you have a... rather different perspective on it, having spent so much time there.
no subject
Maybe...Rey needed to change tactics. Rather than view Cal as an enemy, she should view him as...a colleague? A business partner? Wasn't that a marriage was? A business arrangement between two families? Once again, she could hear her father's voice in her mind, "You're considering this whole thing a failure before you've even given it a chance."
Neither of them said a word to one another until everything was set for tea. She sat across rom him, taking a few sips from her saucer here and there, and managed to enjoy one biscuit through the tense atmosphere they created. Food and tea were already making her headache better. Cal's question gave the young woman pause. setting her teacup down on top of her saucer.]
It was where I spent most of my childhood. A lovely city with as much history as there are shops. My family also spent time in the country side when the summer was over. A wonderful place to spend time with one another. A lot of good memories were made there. [There was a faint smile tugging at the corners of her lips, recalling the time she bested her cousin in a sword fight. In the country side, they didn't have to abide by all of society's rules. Rey was freed from the pressures of acting like a perfect young lady...and there were no balls to attend where men seemed to lose all coordination and step on her feet.
Rey reached for another biscuit, placing it off to the side of her teacup before looking back at her fiancé. There was a moment of silence as she internally debated if she should ask questions of her soon-to-be husband, or have a real and honest conversation with him.]
I owe you an apology, Caledon. [Her voice was soft, a hint of tiredness in her words.] I do not know you, and I made the stupid decision to believe you would be like the other suitors who've tried to court me. Men who saw me as a prize and who eagerly wanted to leave their fingerprints on my body. [Rey wasn't stupid, she knew what men wanted. Her Aunt Leia made sure she didn't grow up to be so young and naïve to fall for every flowery poem, or half-hearted promise, or be easily swayed by a smoldering look. One of the reasons why she kept a weapon in her hair--a last resort.]
You are not like them, and I am sorry for letting my fears blind me to your true character.
[Hopefully that would soothe Cal's mind and help him understand why she was quick to pull away. While Rey had not been mistreated by her family, she was raised to be on guard at all times. The men who have approached her, well, a title could not cover up lack of manners of class.
She was the first to lower her eyes away from him, looking down at her tea and biscuit.] Kindness is a rarity in this world, and I am sorry for not being kinder earlier.
no subject
Christ, he hoped not.
Though, again: she was still young. Even if she had been hidden away from the world, which he had no proof of, it might only have been done to protect her virtue. She was spoken for now, and no one could find fault with a man like him wanting to show his bride more of the world than she'd seen at her family's country home. And who knew? Once she'd seen all the excitement he could offer her, perhaps her tastes would change.
It was fine. It would all be fine.
And then she had to go and say that.
Other suitors. Of course she'd had them; every girl worth having did. But men who eagerly wanted to leave their fingerprints on her body?
What the hell was she on about?
Had she been left unsupervised with someone? Had they harmed her? Defiled her?
Rage flared at the thought of anyone touching what was his, but underneath it came a different concern. Had he not been allowed to get to know her better before, so that he wouldn't realize she wasn't a virgin?
Or had she had to defend herself against someone? Was that why she was so damned skittish with him now?
He shuttered his expression into flat neutrality, and set his teacup and saucer down. ]
Other suitors, [ he repeated, and his voice sounded wrong even to his own ears. Too low. Too full of warning. He cleared his throat and tried again. ]
They... did things to you?
no subject
Then again, perhaps most men would love to have a naïve woman. A great way to bend, twist and mold their bride into whatever they wanted. Was that what Cal would've wanted?
Rey let out a soft sigh, lifting her gaze to stare at her teacup and saucer.]
I was speaking metaphorically. Not...in the literal sense. [Rey paused, gathering her thoughts.] There were some who managed to step on my feet more times than I could count. Some did not care for oral hygiene. [Her nose wrinkled at that particular memory. The man's breath entered a room before he did.] But, there were a few who believed their titles, their money, allowed them to skirt around the rules.
[Rey paused as a few choice memories danced across her mind.]
One gentleman asked for two more dances, and I politely declined. He didn't take kindly to my refusal and decided to hold my hand so tight, I thought he might break my fingers. Another... [A bitter smile danced across her lips.] Said my looks made up for my lack of child bearing hips.
[Like she had any control over her own body and its ability to produce children.]
My cousin overheard him, and intervened before I could retaliate. [Whether that was a kick to the shins, or a punch to the throat. At least Ben saved Rey from doing something that would harm the family's reputation.
The young woman lifted her gaze to Cal's face. If he was still upset or if he was beginning to understand why she was skittish to his touch, or didn't wish to be alone with him.]
I know a woman of my status is sought after--but I do not believe it gives a man, regardless of his status or title, carte blanche to treat me in such a way.
