For a species as long-living as the Olympians are, it had seemed for a long time that they didn’t have soulmates at all. But then the first message came on an arm. It was a rarity, and not one that the Muses ever considered for themselves.

Polyhymnia had taken to living on Earth full time. Over the years she went by many names and had many careers. By the time she saw the first scribble on her arm she was well into her thousands. She was shocked to see the writing, just a little message, a greeting (something most try at some point).

Spock recognizes the letters that answer his scribbling, but he can't read them. He has to ask for help and, when he does, his mother explains what they mean. The age appropriate explanation is that he's writing a note to his very best friend, one he hasn't even met yet. The idea takes a while to settle in the back of his mind, to make sense, but when it does, he is content with the concept.

It does a great deal to inspire him to learn terran lettering and linguistic structure.

For a while, he mostly just draws. He's quite good, even by general standards, but one day he asks a question. Some questions he can't ask, but the reasons behind what is unacceptable elude him. He just knows that when he writes, the letters don't seem to sink in the way other things do. This question must be acceptable, because it stays.

Do you live on Earth?

With long-lived species, it is expected that your soulmate will likely be far younger than yourself, especially at first contact.

She can see some of the drawings, they show as faint lines but she can tell they are done by a rather skilled hand.

It's easy enough to answer and Spock thinks little of it. It does not occur to him to specify where he does live but that is largely because most humans do not seem to enjoy Vulcan. If she is from Earth, she is likely human, and he would prefer not requesting she do something unenjoyable.

I have never been to Earth. I hope to go one day.

She will learn it, assuming enough resources exist. She knows most Earth languages all the way back to Ancient Greek. She can probably put her mind to learning one from another world.

Vulcan

There is some irony there but Spock would miss it even if he were old enough to understand it.

In practice, Vulcan isn't a very simple language to learn, especially not through writing, but as time passes Spock gets better with his English as well. He also ends up with more real-estate for writing as his arms grow.

He does wonder, on occasion, whether the person who writes back to him will be happy with a Vulcan soulmate, but he can't bring himself to ask. At one point after a year or so, his responses slow to a halt. The only thing that makes it clear that he hasn't tragically expired is the occasional start of a word, in Vulcan or English, that appears and is hastily scribbled out.

After that, he devotes himself to logic and doesn't ask any more questions about Earth.

Vulcan proves to be a challenging language, but her motivation to be able to speak to him is stronger than the difficulty.

Though the messages grow less frequent and she does worry a little about him. But she doesn’t want to be overbearing, so she gives him space for a while.

2. A red string tied around your pinky is connected to your soulmate’s pinky (when the two of you are at a certain distance). You can only see the string of fate when you close your eyes.
3. Ink marks (similar to tattoos) are on your body. When your soulmate is in the vicinity, it’ll slowly move, as if reaching out. When you two touch, the tattoos will connect with each other.
4. It is impossible to lie to your destined soulmate.
