[Meredith has been an executive assistant for a tech CEO for years, but she's eager for something new.]
no subject
[ She looks up from her papers momentarily to take in the woman in front of her. ]
no subject
[Meredith is dressed neatly, hair in a tidy bun, one hand on a cane for support. She's hoping that Marie-Claude mostly ignores that part. Yes, she's got chronic health bullshit. No, that won't stop her from being a force of nature as an assistant.]
Justice League membership- trials start now!
Greetings. I hope you did not find the trip too taxing.
no subject
[It's not her time. She's not even entirely sure what that...vortex had been that brought her here. It's a frankly marvelous future in which people have calculators in their pockets that can call Asia and look up encyclopedias - not that they actually seem to use them much for that, but that's a puzzle for another day and her mind is wandering...]
[But oh, she can't help it, immediately looking at the control panel for the transporter.]
Oh, my, wonders upon wonders. I get that it breaks us down into constituent molecules - that's the only way it could work - but how does it get them to reintegrate properly?
[And it's only then that the Spider Queen realizes she's on the moon - and this time the voice comes with outright awe.]
Oh, golly.
no subject
Yes, I often have a similar reaction.
[ His even tone of voice makes it hard to believe he ever gets so excited as ‘golly’, but he likes to play his calm part. ]
When the interview is over, I am sure I can find a space suit if you wish to walk upon the surface.
[ He’s enjoying her response. Why not give a little more joy into life? Besides, it's a good test in itself. ]
no subject
The future sure has its share of marvels.
[She looks to him, though, with a nod.]
But since that sounds like a rollicking adventure - we'd better get the interview part over and done with, shouldn't we, Mr...?
[What does a space man built like a brickhouse like to be called, after all?]

J'onzz. J'onn J'onzz, known to the people of Earth as Martian Manhunter. [ But, his heart is warmer than his hand and he adds- ] But, please, call me J'onn.
[ Yes, the man from Mars goes by John. ]
We have several interviews today, each being conducted by a different member of the league. I asked for you.
[ He allows her to speculate on why, as he walks her to seating and a low table. No one else is in the base right now, so the viewing dome is as good a place as any. It’s often used for receptions, but a meeting of two is fine. ]
no subject
[They surely have that, right?]
Well, Mr....J'onn. Let's hope I don't disappoint.
no subject
I trust you will not. I was most surprised to see your name on the list of applicants.
[ J'onn isn't undertaking a full mind scan yet, but he is keeping receptive. Detecting feelings and vague impressions of thought. ]
Curiosity is a great weakness of mine, Spider Queen. Are you in any way related to the original? Your grandmother, perhaps? Or is it a simple homage?
[ A time warp is not ludicrous to him, but not where his logically mind would go as a first explanation. ]
no subject
Well, I'm here and if I'm here I'm gonna help - it's not like I can get back. Because, well, I am the original. As far as I know. This time-and-space stuff is a bit new to me. But I grabbed a creep, fell through some sort of portal and...well, here we are.
[Some costumed palooka using what she now knew were gaps through time to pull off heists that couldn't be pursued. Pretty smart, though he'd ended up with a face full of her boot anyway.]
no subject
He quirks one of his considerable brows as she explains, a hand going to his chin immediately. Adding a bit of Rodin's Thinker. His wide, red eyes are always hard to read, being as broad and blank as railroad crossing lights. But he regards her with as much sympathy as fascination. ]
Intriguing... it appears we are both strangers in a strange land. That will certainly present some unique challenges.
[ He has a million questions, but his gentle heart pushes one to the forefront. ]
Have you found a home here?
[ He has and hasn't, in the long time he's been on Earth. Lots of them, but the only one where his heart is remains not a place but the league. ]
no subject
[But the other question...]
Well, not as such. I guess you can say it was 'deal with criminal' first.
no subject
If you require assistance in finding lodging, or creating a civllian identity in this age, I will be honoured to be of service.
[ He put it on the table, but doesn't dwell on it, though it's no hollow offer. She hasn't come for charity- she's come to help. ]
Perhaps we should discuss how these difficulties will impact you. Have you encountered any modern threats, so far?
no subject
And your League.
[She gestures around.]
And apparently this.
no subject
[ J'onn comprehends the situation is less an interview, and more a request for help after all. His hands clasp together, as he thinks. It takes some practice to truly read his expressions, but there are countless thoughts flying around behind those glowing red eyes.
Eventually, he speaks again. ]
The help is yours. We'll put a pin in membership for now. First things first, and as is often the case, I think some dinner is in order.
no subject
I will admit my stomach has been growling. So they still eat in the future, then? It's not like dehydrated pills or nonsense?
[The last at least said with humour.]
no subject
no subject
Eight years after when I'm from.
[A thought occurs to her. An important one.]
Do we beat the bastards? The fascists, I mean. And the Japanese.
[And, because her stomach is growling.]
Something modern, I think. Gotta get used to the modern world sometime.
no subject
[ He stands with a sweeping of his cape, gesturing for her to walk beside him. It’s only a small walk to the commissary, not nearly enough to fit a world history. ]
Fascism, sadly, never truly vanished. It rears its head in many forms, and we endeavour to face it whenever it does.
no subject
Kinda figured that. Evil doesn't change much. And also kinda figured we wouldn't be buddies with the Soviets for long.
no subject
[ It was a dreadfully lonely time to be an alien on Earth. No one saw the public form she now walks beside for many years (many more, as the sliding timescale keeps him appearing in the 50s!) until Superman appeared.
His steps are calculated, not to outpace her despite his advantage in leg length. ]
There will be much to learn. But much to tell us too. Your shortcut to our time will have brought some valuable cargo, I suspect.
[ The electronic sliding Star Trek doors 'ssshussh' open as they step into the commissary. Just as modern and silver, arranged with multiple smaller tables on the edge of the broad room and a few larger ones. He gestures to a table near a serving window, while he simply walks through the wall to get into the kitchen. They can talk while he prepares. ]
I think some Japanese cuisine will be a good early lesson.
no subject
Japanese, huh? Y'know, if you said that where I was last week, people'd have given you some looks, that's for sure.
no subject
[ His cape folds around him as if possessed of a will of its own, morphing across his surface to form a chef's uniform. Complete with toque. Sadly, no window to show off his abs, but at least it's form fitting. ]
The world is, in a way, smaller now than it was then. But sentient beings share more similarities than differences, especially those of the same planet. Experience is the best teacher.
[ He punctuates this with the rapid thunk of slicing vegetables. A small smile slipping onto place before he adds- ]
And, honestly, I just like udon.
no subject
Oh, ok. What's, uh...?
[It's not exactly a common dish where and when she's from.]
Looking for someone who knows how to handle.. delicate feathers?
It won't be all the time. Just when I need you, I suppose. [Whoever genuinely responds to this might think she was asking for help with an animal of some sort, but nope. This was for her. The wings in question were hers.]
