You're asking something from me I can't give. Feeling sorry for what I did isn't something I'm wired for. I can feel sorry for the consequences that happen because of my actions but regretting what I did in the first place? Not gonna happen.

That's how redemption works, Dex. You have to actually want to atone for sin and feel something akin to regret for your actions. If you can't do that, you can't find it.

My therapist once told me that kindness and compassion are not innate emotions to people. Empathy is but it's not the same thing. And that to keep those qualities, you have to make a choice every day to choose those instead of anything else inside of you.

I can't be sorry for what I did in the past. All I can do is try to make up for it in the future.

Kindness and compassion are innate to most people and it's only the limitations that are put on us that temper those things in some. People choose not to be kind because it suits them, and that's what you did. You made choices the entire way and that you continue to make them now doesn't speak to atonement.

I'm stuck in a bad cycle. Every time I try to get out of it, someone pulls me back in. Kind of hard to look for a way to do better when no one will let me.

The point of these things is to overcome the worst impulses and influences of other people. You could have said no to Vanessa. You could have taken your escape and fled the city. You keep making choices that put you in those cycles so the thing that needs to happen? You have to stop and think about consequences again. Not just for yourself. You need to ask--who is going to get hurt from this? And if people are, don't do it.
