Vamp out
THE VAMPIRE MEME

Vampires are appealing creatures. They can be dark, mysterious, sexy, or just downright violent. They can even be hunky and sparkly in the sun! Vampires come in so many different varieties, it's hard to choose just one type. Whatever your brand of vampire, it's just hard to resist the draw of one of the oldest, most unsettling figures in horror to date. So why not try your hand at playing one yourself? Or offer your character up for bait if you're more inclined to do so. - Post your characters.Name/Series/Preferences in the subject field as usual along with whether your character is a vampire, outsider, or hunter(Unless you'd like to roll for individual threads!). - Others respond after going to RNG.Roll 1-3 for what your character is and then1-3 again for what type (if you desire). - Choose or roll for a scenario. You could make up your own after you roll for what your character's role will be if you want! - Have fun! Vampires 1 - Sire You're old enough to have created vampires of your own. Maybe one, maybe many, but they're all special to you in their own way. 2 - Sired You were once normal, human, but then you were changed into something more. Do you thank your creator or hate them for changing you into a monster? 3 - n/a Your creator is neither here nor there at the moment. You're just a vampire on the hunt or trying to fit in. Outsider 1 - Victim You're a victim, someone to drain and leave behind. Maybe they'll take pity on you and allow you to join, be one of them. 2 - Willing You've got the hots for vampires or just a morbid fascination. You're willing to let them drink from you and maybe so much more. 3 - Pawn You're being controlled somehow by a vampire. Mind control, blackmail, whatever. Hunter 1 - Born You come from a long line of vampire hunters. 2 - Moral Objection Vampires are abominations that deserve to be wiped off the face of the planet. 3 - Vengeance A vampire took someone dear from you or possibly made you into one of them. All you can think about is getting vengeance. Gen 1 - hunted prey. You're starving tonight and you're out scoping for just the right nighttime snack. 2 - newly made. You're a newly made vampire or you've encountered someone who's recently been changed. How do you deal? 3 - mind control. Some vampires have the ability to control humans' thoughts or actions and tonight is the night you have to do it. 4 - overpopulated. Vampires have taken over the world and now humans are treated like livestock or pets that you can feed off of when you feel like it. Not all vampires think this is cool though... 5 - injured. Not a lot can injure a vampire but there are those that will drain them for their blood or those that hunt them and know tricks that actually leave a mark. Do you help them? Or if you're the one injured, do you seek help? 6 - unaccepted. You were changed or you've met someone who was once dear to you and changed... you're not sure how to accept them. 7 - close call. It's too close to sunrise and you have got to find refuge with someone. 8 - player's choice. For anything that's been missed!
| Violent 1 - trail of bodies. Humans are nothing but food and you've gone on a spree lately. 2 - hunted. You're being hunted or you're hunting. 3 - outnumbered. A bar or a club full of vampires doesn't bode well for humans... 4 - ravenous. You've been starved or drained and you're going after the first person you see or you've stumbled across an extremely hungry vampire. 5 - entitled. You're entitled to this person's blood, whether they want to give it or not. 6 - self-defense. You have to defend yourself from those that want to hurt you. 7 - vengeance. Someone is after vengeance... 8 - player's choice. For anything that's been missed! Romantic 1 - real love. You know this is real, even if the other person is reluctant. Maybe it's not even a worry between you two and you just feel like being together. 2 - confession. It might not be the smartest idea, but you need to tell this vampire or human exactly how you feel for them. 3 - forever. It's time to make your lover into some a vampire or maybe it's time to ask your vampire lover to do it for you. 4 - making it work. There are obviously some problems, but you're going to overcome them. 5 - forbidden. Either no one can know about what you're doing or you just receive dirty looks for doing it. 6 - not exactly normal. Your attraction might not be normal or the circumstances surrounding your relationship might not be and it's time to discuss if you have a future or you're just kidding yourselves. 7 - defense. Someone hurt your lover and now they have to pay. 8 - player's choice. For anything that's been missed! Smut 1 - blood offering. There's nothing like a vampire feeding on you that gets you in the mood more. You offer them your blood in exchange for something else. 2 - coerced. Some vampires have mind control capabilities and some have blood that's like a drug that will make you crave more. 3 - no sex better than vampire sex. You're both vampires or one of you is dead set on becoming on tonight and you'll do anything to convince your lover it's time. 4 - pet. Similar to another option except that a 'pet 'entails so much more than being treated like livestock or cattle. 5 - touched the monster's heart. You're actually in love with each other even though you weren't sure it was possible. You just want to make love and show your vampire how you feel. 6 - so much stronger. The human or weaker vampire might not want it, but thankfully you're strong enough to take whatever you want from them. 7 - mine. It's time to claim what is rightfully yours and make sure they know it. 8 - player's choice. For anything that's been missed! |

[Oh this would be fun! I am just gonna give you a starter and we can roll with it.]
Astarion hated being hungry now that he's gotten a taste of actual blood. But the issue was asking people for a little sip without seeming too...much. Right now he had a terrible night hunting and was still hungry as he stalked back into the Inn.
"What is a vampire supposed to do for a meal around here," he growls as he walks up to Barcus and sits down. "the hunting is terrible."
Yay!
To say the gnome is a little intimidated by a vampire three times his size would be an understatement, but to act intimidated would be beneath him. So he does grimace and flinch slightly at the growl, but recovers quickly and gives Astarion a dour look and a raised eyebrow. "I suppose most of the wildlife out there is sans blood at this point. I wouldn't fancy a bite of any of it, myself."
There's a pause, where he looks at His Majesty, the hairless cat sleeping by the hearth. "...he must be eating something, I suppose. Probably nothing you want to share."
"How bad is it? If you're going to have to start asking for volunteers..." Does he like that idea? No. But it's better to have a vampire that's just slightly peckish around than one who can't control his thirst due to starvation.
Re: Yay!
"I've been eating mice," Astarion grumbles and glances at the cat. "Which I think he's been doing and mice are not rats. Barely a mouthful and I'm already competing with a cat for what mouthfuls there are."
Astarion flinches as he hears himself. Cazador would have beaten him for sounding like that. "I should be fine for maybe another day before I get too hungry to fight or the hunger gets worse.
no subject
"But I suppose that doesn't help you. Even if we had grubs here, they don't exactly have blood in them."
He raises the flask he's been mixing ingredients in up to the light, studying the reaction for a long moment. When he sets it down, he sighs and looks over at Astarion. "Damn it. We might need everyone who can fight, at any moment, and you can't exactly go asking the children for a bite, can you."
That leaves one obvious choice, in this very room, and it's not the cat. "If I do it, will you promise to help find Wulbren?"

Get him to the safehouse. [ He knows he doesn't need to tell Gav, that they're already on the way. He knows he doesn't need to add, "I'll be there." It's understood. Clive ends the call and looks down at the dirty ground of the alleyway for a moment. He's brought back to reality by the shuffling groan of the wraith-like creature struggling in the grip of his other hand. ]
I think we're done here. [ Clive's voice is dark and cold, and he looks at the delirious creature. Once a human, forcibly turned into a vampire, starved until they became this hunger-driven thing. Maybe. Maybe with enough time and kindness, they could be brought back to themselves, given a chance at a new, longer life. Clive isn't feeling merciful, and so his grip tightens around the creature's neck until Clive hears the final, resounding crack of the vampire's spine. In a moment, the life leaves that poor thing's body and Clive is letting them drop to the ground in a heap.
He has a soldier to tend to.
He's waiting at the safehouse, only just arrived, when Gave arrives in turn with a grim package. Gav has a sorry expression on his face, and Clive's jaw twitches before he nods over at the table in the makeshift dining area. He strides over towards Gav and Zack, slipping his arm underneath Zack's shoulder opposite of Gav for added support. ]
Walk me through it, Zack. What happened?
[ Clive is the leader of the Cursebreakers, always out in the field just like all of his loyal soldiers. He won't ask them to risk their lives without putting his own skin on the line as well; that doesn't lessen the guilt warring in his immortal frame.
They make it over to the table; he could just heft Zack up onto it himself, but he accomplishes the task with Gav, just to maintain his humanity through the rage and fear simmering inside him. ]
no subject
He tries to grin when Clive saunters in, all smoke and fire. He can see the fiery anger in Clive's expression, even if the old vampire is keeping as serious as ever. Once that broad shoulder is under his arm to help him stand straight, Zack hisses out a groan which is followed by a grim, rumbling laugh.]
You wouldn't believe it, boss. A group of scavengers. They came out of nowhere. I had three of them on me before I could even turn around and tell them to back off.
[Zack is a seasoned hunter, he's been doing this gig for years now. Not only because it makes decent money but because he's come to appreciate the cause that Clive leads. He's made a family with the hunters. And ... Vampires are dangerous beings that have been dwindling human numbers for as long as he can remember, but Zack can hardly think that they're evil. They used to be human once. So, despite the very fact that Zack helps kill the ones that are too lost in their own darkness and hunger, he knows that there are some vampires out there that... Can maybe be saved. Just look at Clive. A vampire but a man first and one that cares deeply for his group.
But first, Zack needs to save himself. Meaning he collapses on the hard table as soon as they're able to heft him onto it.]
Come on, lay it on me. It doesn't look that bad, right?
no subject
He feels a chill wash through him, even despite his preternaturally cooler flesh. ]
You've still got that puppy mug of yours intact, so I suppose it's not half-bad... [ He tries to be humorous, but his voice is grim.
Clive plucks one of his gloves off and bites into the flesh of his palm; he doesn't hesitate to press the wound there against the wound in Zack's side. His blood would soothe the pain, but not much else when applied externally like this. Docile prey are easier to feed upon. ]
Zack. You need to make a choice, sooner, rather than later.
no subject
But Zack is still going to try and stay optimistic. He glances at Clive with another half-smile. It's slowly fading, though.]
Don't say it like you can already smell the blood in the water, man.
[Because he knows Clive can smell it. That's what sucks.]
Just get me stitched up. It'll be fine.
[Will it, though...]
no subject
If you want to remain human, I won't blame you, but...
[ Clive knows he could command it: put not just the power of his vampiric presence into his voice, but the fact that he's been Zack's leader for a few years now. But he won't do that. ]
I haven't... sired anyone before, but I'll do it, for you. [ Not even Gav, who's watching all of this with a quiet stoicism. He was turned by Cid, who led them before Clive. He knows the truth of Clive's words.
Clive puts his hand to one of Zack's. ]
There's no shame in wanting to live, or in wanting to... die as you are. It's your choice, but... [ His shoulders fall a little. ] I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be sorry to lose you.
no subject
But there is that little edge of doubt inside of him. The world is growing colder by the second. He's bleeding out.
Then Clive puts his hand on top of Zack's hand and he has to glance at the other man. He watches his face, wondering what's going through that head of his. How many times has Clive had to lose his friends over the years?]
Really? You've never sired anyone before? ... That's hard to believe. You're such a bleeding heart.
[He has to tease one more time before seriously considering the question. Losing his humanity in exchange for living. Staying alive to ... To do what? If Clive is going to miss him, them who's there with Clive now? And later?]
You know, in any other life I might have said to just let me die a hero's death. But... you make a pretty compelling argument.
no subject
Clive leans in, feeling the weight of what might be about to happen pulling him into this sort of tender, dark space. He rests his forehead against Zack's.
He has flashes of old memory of when he became a vampire himself. There's always a kind of intimacy in it. ]
You're still a hero. [ But then Clive begins to move quickly. He doesn't see the sense in making a new wound on Zack's person, so he moves fluidly like a beast and finds the wound in Zack's torso. He needs Zack's blood in him first, before he can offer his own to make the change.
His nostrils flare as he smells the traces of the vampire that caused his wound, and a growl rumbles in his chest - pure instinct. ]
Clive. [ It's Gav, bringing him back to himself from his rage, and he laps at the wound in Zack's side. His saliva would drive the numbness his initial dose of blood caused to something like euphoria as it works its way through Zack's system. Clive cleans the ragged wound with his tongue. It's quick work that only seems to stretch out into minutes.
He finally breaks away from the wound, having had enough of Zack's blood that his own would be sufficient to induce the change. Clive bites down into his wrist and rips away at it with his teeth, ruthlessly enough that the wound won't close so quickly. It's the sacrifice a sire should make for their fledgling-to-be.
He presses the wound towards Zack's lips. ]
I'll be here. It's okay to be scared, but I'll be here through all of it.
no subject
Zack is not expecting it to feel like that for him. But Clive is close, coming in like the burning fire that he always is. When their brows touch, he can already feel Clive's heat and he already feels the urge to want to grab him and keep him there.
Then Clive starts to administer himself to Zack's wound on his torso and Zack can barely keep his senses straight. It's a strange, warm-hot feeling. Weirdly euphoric. And it makes him gasp out and grab hold of Clive's shoulder quickly, unsure if he should push or pull him in. The pain is somehow pleasant and aching at the same time. What the hell is this...
Before he can make heads or tails of his own slowing down heart... Clive's wrist is at his mouth.]
You know what this means, right... Clive.
[They'll be together for a long. Long time. Zack wonders if it's okay to leave his humanity behind. Watch his friends fade away. He is scared. But at least Clive would be there. All smoke and fire.
Zack grabs Clive's wrist and he pulls the bleeding wound to his mouth. Coppery blood fills his mouth like liquid gold. It tastes... Good. Too good. He can't stop drinking.]
no subject
It feels, almost, like the first time he spent in bed with a lover.
He knows this will run far deeper than that.
Clive sighs, and feels the rush of his blood into Zack's mouth, and he swears he can even feel it continuing to run into Zack's body, starting to merge into his flesh and change him. It doesn't work that quickly, however, or at least not like that.
Sure, Zack might feel the wound in his side starting to close, but it won't be until they reach a certain tipping point and Clive pulls away that the change will fully start to happen.
Every beat of Clive's heart feels like one more step towards a final moment, a moment they reach when Clive has to finally pull his wrist away from Zack. He resists the urge to clutch at it; it will close of its own accord now. Instead, he reaches with his uninjured hand toward clasp hold of Zack's again. ]
You're going to be okay. [ Clive wills the steel into his voice, for Zack, to be the leader, the sire, he needs. This will probably be frightening - Clive remembers it vaguely - it feels like dying, as vampiric blood starts to force changes at the cellular level all at once. ]
no subject
Clive is intricately part of him now. He knows that. He knows what that means.
Zack's head lulls forward. The last vestiges of his humanity slowly seep away and Zack feels his "death" rush to greet him like falling out of the sky to hit the ground below. His stomach lurches. His body seizes and it heals faster than it ever has. Soon enough, Zack is no longer bleeding out but instead is growing stronger every single second that Clive's blood mingles with his own.
Clive might pull away but Zack grabs him roughly and desperately. Almost like he can't deal with the other man pulling away from him for a single second right now. Not when Zack's changing. Zack has to close his eyes as he drops his forehead to Clive's shoulder. His body is shuddering, his shoulders tense and his muscles screaming.
And then Zack goes still and silent. When he opens his eyes, they're no longer that pure blue colour they once were but now mingle with an otherworldly yellowness.]
... Did it. ... You did it. I'm alright. Damn it... We're alright.

let me know if anything wants changed
The archive for The Society for the Study of the Paranatural, Occult and Crypto-Scientific is a story and half beneath a busy street in Marylebone, accessed via a small black down below street level below some sprawling neoclassical edifice if academia. It is unclear if anyone in the building above even knows anything except the space has been used since the second Enlightenment and paid for in perpetuity.
One enters rooms of dark, dark paneled walnut made all the darker by two centuries of cigarette smoke and packed floor to ceiling with the imagines and artifacts of the strange.
A long hallway, lined with offices and then opening out into the library itself, a space the size of a ballroom, with the upper story comprised of a mezzanine with an iron railing accessed by spiral staircases at the four corners. Above, a little feeble light gets in via the small sidewalk level windows, grimey with the soot of the street. Eva does not clean them on the outside, for as they are it means the daylight does not trouble her. The rest of the space is lit by old lamps with warm bulbs as the bright, blue-tone modern light hurts her eyes, currently protected by glasses with color-treated lenses to ease the constant headaches. The walls are lined with enormous legal bookcases, the glass fronts pulled to protect them from the dust.
The most modern contrivence in here is a large, specialized book scanner. Dr. Nix dreams of digitizing it all before it turns to dust. Before she loses her mind and all the information about the archive contained within it. There is a card catalog for researchers, but it's largely faster to just ask her, most of the time.
That's if anyone is ever here at all to ask, which is rarer and rarer nowadays. There was a brief increase during the dark tourism boom of the early 2010s, when the library had appeared on the Morbid Anatomy blog and experienced a brief mention on Atlas Obscura. Harrowing time, really, for the deeply private woman who stewards the place.
It seems silly to keep adding to the collection, then, if so few people use it. But books are perhaps the only human vice left to Dr. Nix and the promise of an old book, particularly on the matters the library specializes in, is utterly irresistible to her. And Ms. Chandler had been so accommodating of her request to meet as the sun was setting, and in the library itself. Nix has lived here since just after the second world war, you see, and rarely leaves the dusty quiet. Going out into the teeming streets of London, full of vulnerable humans and sometimes other vampires (which frighten her, and in turn make her a target for their disdain), is simply too much for her senses nowadays. How good of the antiquarian bookseller to agree to terms, it means she might actually get to feel excited about it instead of having to work up her nerve to leave the library.
She moves the prewar pencil holder on her desk to a different spot for the dozenth time when the bell-- hoarse from disuse-- rings, shattering her delicate hearing for a moment with the harsh tone. The silence after it feels deafening, broken only by her little heeled shoes on the wooden floor.
She peers through the small window at the top of the door before opening it.
"You must be Ms. Chandler." She says, stepping back to permit entry. "Do come in."
She's certainly not a very impressive specimen, as far as vampires go. All of five foot tall, rail thin, bespectacled and with a wild nest of dust-brown curls piled on top of her head, dressed in tweedy wools you almost can't buy in a store anymore. Marble-pale skin with a blue-gray undertone and pale gray eyes that seem to simply lack any color at all, as if the whole form of the little archivist was itself a fading photograph from the dawn of the last century. Her smile is thin-lipped so as not to show any teeth at all, but seems genuine enough. Making an effort at social function, at least.

Plus, they've seen what science can do. Science made miracles seem obtainable. It gave both men a sense of control in a cold universe. Wasn't it better to try to fight than to be resigned to unfair fates? What they failed in their separate projects were also teaching moments. Perhaps from the ashes of those setbacks they could combine their works into something better.
So the men trudged on despite being well aware of the risks. After many nights and many disappointments, the moment of truth finally arrived.
