"I have brought you all together to tell you that I have been chosen for a holy pursuit by one of our Old Gods, Rowan of the Weirwoods," Sansa says, motioning toward Rowan. He is still glamoured but he will remove it when the time is right, she thinks, so she continues.
"As this will take me from Winterfell, I decree that Jon Stark will be my successor and he will be returned from exile beyond the Wall and installed as your King in the North once more."
There's a riot from the crowd and Sansa speaks over them, holding up a hand. "Silence. Your God has yet to speak."
no subject
He waited, watching eyes turn to him, watching people fall, some kneeling, some fleeing. His hand came out to take hers, holding it gently. "I have been longing for a mate for longer than any of you have thought of breath. I have finally found one worthy. Her consent has been given, and that is the only word that matters in this discussion, barring mine."
He hated adding that last part, but for the men sizing him up, he knew his word mattered more than hers.

"We have supported our queen even before she was our queen. If a woman of House Stark is chosen as the mate of one of our Old Gods made manifest, we are bound to fulfill the decree issued by her to retrieve her brother to become our king once more. Pledge your allegiance to the Queen in the North once more and the King in the North yet to come."
Now the crowd does just that, chanting her title and Jon's title to be, and Sansa lets out a breath she didn't know she was holding. She holds up a hand once again.
"I consider the matter concluded. I have to leave before we install the new king but Lord Manderly will have the throne in my stead. If there is any thought of rebellion, know that the gods will retaliate swiftly."
Sansa does not believe that to be true since Rowan isn't actually a god but it is a threat strong enough to keep any ambitious lords in check. She reaches for Rowan's hand and squeezes it.
"I think that's done," she says quietly.

"There are certain things I need to bring. Will it be possible to bring one trunk with me? I do not know how much we will be able to carry but I would like to bring my sewing and my harp."
Dresses can be left behind as she can always make them anew but she will want her coronation gown along with her needles and thread and current embroidery. No matter where she goes, she will want to sew.

He could almost feel the nervousness and anxiety thrumming through the bond that hadn't solidified yet.
no subject
Still, she goes to her chambers and packs a trunk with her most precious things. It does not take her long. The thing that takes her a long time is writing letters to each of her siblings and when she is finished, she is crying.
"I know there might be a way to see them again," she says softly. "But I know I will miss them."
no subject
For the long term, it wouldn't work, but at least for a year from now, he could give her a meeting with her siblings to say goodbye in person. He lifted his hand and wiped at her cheeks, brushing away her tears. "If I could make it easier on you, I would."
no subject
Sansa takes a deep breath to steel herself.
"No, this must be goodbye. This must be final."
no subject
"Do you want to stay for a last meal, or would you like to leave now?"
no subject
No, Winterfell is not the place for someone like Rowan who doesn't seem as if he would thrive in the deep snows and ice. She has to say goodbye to her home for the final time and she feels it best to snip the thread quickly and not let it fray over time.
"We should make our way to your more permanent home."
no subject
"If you'd like." He was quiet for a moment, hand lifting to let his fingers glide through her hair. "I'm not going to say I'm sorry for this, because I'm not. I found you, and that means more to me, but I am sorry if you're saddened."
no subject
"But I want to leave and be with you. I have never had nothing of my very own before, not since I was too small to understand the significance of such things. Also, I feel it will be easier to be...intimate in a place that is not Winterfell. As much as this is my home, it was once my prison and the place I was broken."
no subject
He let his thumb trace under her cheekbone, looking into soft blue eyes and smiling. "As you like. Then let's be on our way. The sooner we're in my land, the sooner we can sort out how to make it yours."
no subject
Sansa impulsively hugs him again.
"This is where you will have to lead me. I do not know where we are going or how to get there so I trust you will get me there safely."
no subject
She hugs him and he smiles, pleased that she was starting to slowly start to trust him with herself.
"We'll go back to your Weirwood and have Rue take it from there."
no subject
"I wonder where we came out," she asks, looking around. When she looks toward the horizon, she sees buildings that touch the sky, buildings higher than the Eyrie.
"Is that where you live? In that city in the sky?"
no subject
Sansa might also notice that as they walked to where Rowan left his car during his camping trip, and as they drove back to the city, all the people there, young and old, had a familiar with them. It made him wonder if her entering this world would bring her one of her own, or if her not having one would make her stand out. He expected she wouldn't like the pity from others. He held the door open for her enter the car, explaining to her what it was and what he was doing as he started it and started the drive down the long winding roads towards where he'd made his home.
no subject
"This is absolutely delightful," she says, looking around excitedly. "You travel so quickly - you could cover the distance from Winterfell to the Wall in a day with something like this. And you can see everything through the glass, too, while having the cover of a wheelhouse."
no subject
no subject
"How far is it to your home?"
no subject
no subject
It's a beautiful house, even if it's much smaller than Winterfell, and Sansa can see why anyone would want to live there.
"It's too cold to have that much glass in the North."
no subject
no subject
"I cannot wait to see the inside," she says. "There will be no touches of me there, of course, but that will change soon."
