Mermay!

Time for mermaids, sirens and other water creatures! Comment with your merfolk characters, or make your very own AU. Splash around in the waters or try to drown someone. I'm not judging.
IDEAS
Merfolk
Longing to see the surface and all it offers?
Trapped in a net! Are you facing your kidnappers or a savior?
Long travels with your pod, to explore new waters?
Hurt or sick, and taken to a mer facility to be healed - but they actually nice, or will the experiment on you?
Taken from your pod, you've ended up as a sideshow, a circus act or any other form of entertainment.
It's mating season! Try to impress your future mate, even if you might come from different worlds!
Humans
Is that an actual mermaid???
Fallen into the water and saved by a person with fins!
Lured to the waters by siren songs, you're risking an early death by drowning...
How do you kiss? Is it going to be wet and salty?
Finding an injured merfolk, and dragging them home to your bathtub to heal?
A little merfolk child needs your help to find their guardian. Hopefully they won't get the wrong idea.
You really want to be a mermaid, too. Is there any way your new friend can help?

[ Verso announces his arrival with an apology. His steps echo in the empty laboratory; it's not like they have to worry too much on their prized experiment.
Where could Leon go? How far could he actually drag himself?
Somehow, he thinks that's more of a mockery to the man than what has been done to him. That they don't even consider his escape a concern so leave no one to guard the room. As for his place in all of this, he's just another experiment. But, he's also a failure -- so left to roam the laboratory because they know he has nothing outside.
What's freedom for something that could turn into one of those horrific BOWs? ]
Stupid question... but how are you holding up?

Bucky Barnes | MCU | OTA
He was still jumpy, and had a tendency to lash out when he was startled -and he was easily startled- and to lurk in the far corners where he couldn't always be seen right away. With a tail like tarnished bronze and a tangle of dark hair that he refused to let anyone even trim, he usually kept his left arm tucked in close, because that arm was a liability.
That one that had thirty two different electrode nodes, surgical shunts and even magnets in it when they'd found him, not counting the old scars where some had been removed, and the open wounds where he'd obviously pulled others out himself. There were only five still there, electrode nodes that they hadn't been able to remove just yet because they were embedded in the bone.
It was usually easy for him to go unnoticed if he was sitting and listening like he was doing at the moment.

Dex wasn't sure where he'd been taken but he was apprehensive. He'd been kept as a scientific curiosity for so long that he didn't really understand this wasn't just another lab that he'd been taken to. Angry, suspicious, and prone to lashing out because of those two emotions, he was confused by the humans around him as they went through the final steps to transfer him into a new tank from the cramped one that had been used to transport him to his new home. Unable to understand they were here to help instead of hurt him, when one got too close as they went to get him out, he moved with surprising speed as he reached and grabbed one of the humans with his clawed hands.
One of the rescue workers screamed as his teeth sank all the way down the human's forearm right into the bone. Reluctant to use anymore force than they needed to, it still took shocking him with a prod on the lowest setting to finally get him to let go. They took advantage of his temporarily stunned state and got him into his new home. Rather than he punished as Dex expected, the humans merely looked at him with expressions he couldn't interpret. He had no idea that they viewed him with compassion and sympathy, wondering what he'd been put through in order to become so aggressive in temperament, ready to attack as his first defense mechanism.
Once in the tank and left to his own devices, Dex began to calm down and look around curiously, noticing there was another tank right next to his own.

At least it was nice to look at, bright blue scales edged with black and flecked with white and gold speckles here and there, really looking like a drawing of a mermaid's tail rather than a tail itself.

He'd been caught since then, on a few occasions, and had always managed to escape again the few times he wasn't almost immediately thrown back. Because the thing about being sickly was that it led to being cunning, to being creative, and more than that, to wanting to survive, and sometimes that was all that mattered.
It was also how he'd fallen in with Dr. Erskine and his crew, researchers who had put together an educational traveling exhibit of all sorts of creatures, some rare animals, and others like him, a lamia, a gryphon, even a pair of centaurs and a copse of dryads, their trees rooted in what amounted to a large mobile garden bed.
Like them, his traveling tank was large enough to be comfortable, though small enough that he was thankful whenever they stopped somewhere at the seashore, as it gave him a chance to really swim for a while.
[Good for all kinds of timeline shenanigans, and down for other situations if you have an idea.]

The ocean beneath the great city was indeed deep, had to be in order to be able to cover the city when it was submerged. But further out, the floor plummeted away into almost complete darkness.
Great whale-like creatures showed up on the Puddlejumper's scans, some got curious and close but nothing aggressive.
As the trip continued a smaller blip showed up, moving swiftly, followed by several others of the same size. Two caught up with the first, they seemed to buzz around and bump into one another before the two pursuers appeared to vanish from the scanners, leaving whatever their quarry was to continue on, heading right for the Puddlejumper. It suddenly stopped at the right side of the vehicle, and circled around the front, and in the bright lights it came into view.
Some might call the being a merman, but it certainly was not half human. The lower half was shark-like, all white, no dorsal fin but had ridges along almost the entire length of it's back. It was bleeding dark blood from several gashes along it's flank, but seemed unconcerned as it stared inside looking at Sheppard with deep curiosity.
[Todd is a merman but also maybe later since Sheppard been hanging around ancient artifacts he too turns into one or something?]
This is amazing, thank you!

He should have just gone by airship.
They were still a few days or so out from arriving to Tal’Dorei when the ship was caught in a terrible storm. As much as the crew tried to keep all the passengers safe, the storm was too strong. A particularly large wave had ended up taking Dorian with it, and before he realized what was happening he was thrown overboard and into the raging sea.
And while he could hold his breath indefinitely, it would only last as long as he was conscious. But the waves were strong, and determined to pull him completely under.

I'm also weak for a "Shape of Water" scenario where he's been kidnapped by scientists who don't bother to figure out he's a sapient being with feelings and instead treat him as a lab rat to cut up and torture, which means he gets very angry and lashes out at all humans until someone comes along who can see how he's really in a lot of pain and wants someone to care about him. Can be shippy or platonic in nature for the relationship in this idea.]

the food out by the shallows is getting scarce. they've had a couple of lean winters, but the fish supply always bounces back once the water warms back up-- except this year, the days are growing longer and longer and they're still having to scrounge for every meal. some nights he's going hungry. and wolfwood doesn't want to admit it, but he's scared. how're they supposed to keep on like this? so the next time wolfwood goes hunting, he swims far out beyond the waters that they stick to this time of year, pushes deeper in search of food.
it pays off. he's only been out here a few hours, and wolfwood's pouch is half-full of fish and vegetation. it's been taking them days to find this much food lately. emboldened by success, he decides to swim just a bit further out, hoping to find something with a bit more meat on it. sinking back below the surface, wolfwood hears the boat before he sees it. the buzz of the engine, the propellers whirring through the water-- the sound waves make his teeth ache down to his jaw. then he sees the wide expanse of net skimming through the water, coming right for him. wolfwood takes off in the opposite direction. his powerful tail propulses him forward, moving at a clip that's nearly dizzying, frantically swimming to outpace the boat. he clicks and chirps to try to judge the distance he's gained, but with the ambient sound waves and sonar, it's useless. so he looks back over his shoulder to see the net getting further away, leans hard to the left to try to circumvent the ship's path and double back... and slams his flank into the submerged base of a sea stack.
wolfwood almost inhales water in pure shock, the pain searing along the left side of his tail. the rake marks are deep, and his whole mouth tastes like iron, red starting to cloud the water. he swims another two hundred or so feet on adrenaline alone, but the blood loss catches up with him almost immediately. vision blurring, then dimming, wolfwood loses consciousness just as he starts to drift back and into the boat's nets, which begin to pull up and out of the water to drag their spoils aboard. ]
