hurt/comfort

HURT/COMFORT MEME
Hurt/comfort is a fan fiction genre that involves the physical pain or emotional distress of one character, who is cared for by another character. The injury, sickness or other kind of hurt allows an exploration of the characters and their relationship.

- Post with your character.
- Others respond

1. INJURY. You've been injured. Broken bones or bleeding out or maybe just a tiny little papercut. The choice is yours.
2. SICKNESS. You're sick and laid up in bed, at home or in a hospital. The severity is up to you.
3. FEAR/ANXIETY. Something is happening and you're scared beyond belief.
4. LOSS OF SENSES. Sight, touch, taste, hearing, smell, etc. You've lost some important sense or ability and now you're left to deal with it.
5. DESPAIR. Nothing is good or right anymore and you can't shake the depression. Maybe that friend of yours can help though...
6. BREAKUP. You've been dumped. You need someone to comfort you, possibly by the one who dumped you.
7. MAKE UP. Fight or break up, it's time to makeup.
8. RESCUED. You've just been held captive and/or tortured for however long and finally, someone has come to the rescue.
9. BAD ROMANCE. Fight, cheated on, abused, whatever the case is, someone else can clearly see you need comfort from someone who isn't your terrible lover tonight.
10. LOSS. You've experience a loss of some kind and need help getting through it.
11. INSANITY. You're seeing things that aren't really there, hearing voices, or you're just convinced you're at your wit's end finally and you're going to crack. Maybe someone can give you a helping hand.
12. TIRED. You've had a heard life recently and you're just worn too thin to really care anymore. There's no fight left in you anymore. Can someone help change your mind?
13. ADDICTION. Drugs, alcohol, sex, gambling, or any other type of addiction has got you in its grasp. First time or relapse. Will someone be able to save you?
14. INSOMNIA. You can't sleep anymore, no matter how hard you try. Maybe someone can give you company.
15. NIGHTMARES. Or, on the other end of the spectrum, you can't sleep without gruesome, horrible nightmares. Either someone is stuck in your dream with you, witnessing it or they're just waking you up, soothing you out of it.
16. BLACKMAIL. You've been caught doing something you shouldn't and you were blackmailed because of it
17. SEPARATION. You're going to be separated for awhile or were separated for a long time. Either make up for lost time or try to spend every last moment together.
18. VIOLATED. You've been violated in some way. Can include sexual overtones or not. Can someone help you through it?
19. STRANDED. You've been stranded somewhere remote, with no help of anyone finding you for awhile. Can you survive this together?
20. SINS. You're feeling the weight of your sins and guilt clearer than ever. Can someone give you absolution or lessen the ache any?
21. SECRET. It's difficult having to keep that secret of yours, be it a relationship or something you just don't want to share with anybody else. Maybe it's okay to talk about it now though...

[ She doesn't know this. While she still thinks there's some playful teasing in their relationship and that they're important to each other, she doesn't -- or didn't -- realize just what she meant to him. Maybe she should, though. Especially after he went out into the city and to the hospital for her sake, not even knowing if he'd find any kind of cure or anything to help her. ]

What did you mean?

[ She knew what he meant. ]

I see.
I'll be waiting for you, then.

[ Jill doesn't think that's happening right now. She thinks he just needs someone to talk to, to air his grief to. Especially over the fact she'd been considered KIA. That shakes someone up if they care about you, but she can't even begin to fathom the reality of how much it's uprooted him. ]

We can meet at my place.

[ It feels like it could be dangerous to meet somewhere like her place rather than mutual ground, but it's not the kind of "danger" most people would consider. ]

Is something in particular bringing this on?

[ Not being dead, not being lost, being within arm's reach... She knows the answer to all of this. It's just easier to ask the question and hope for it to be something different. ]

[ The past is what it was and that's just it. It clung to him still. It's why he wants to move this to a way he can see her — a way he needs her. ]

Jill

[ Simple, singular, and knowing. He doesn't want to keep this up through text, but he didn't exactly think this through. Carlos just went and acted on impulse. He was drawn to her, maybe like a moth to the flame. Whatever it was, whatever it lead to, he knew he had to see her.

He lightly jogs to speed things up when he's given permission to proceed to her place. He's casual in a zipper up hoodie that's olive, black t-shirt underneath and a pair of black cargo pants. A pair of dark grey sneakers finish the outfit as he nears her apartment.
]

Maybe it's just ghosts.

[ It's the he realizes he hadn't responded to her first question. He figures he could explain when he got there, and yet... ]

I just want to know you're okay.

I'm sorry I haven't exactly been around

But I am now

[ With that he approaches her door and gives a brisk knock. ]

[ She's pretty sure something is going on, something much deeper than just the words they were saying. ]

Carlos?

[ Unsure of where they're going, she gets the feeling the depth of all of this is going to be deeper than expected. The fact that he needed to see her so soon and the start of the conversation should've clued her in on it, but it didn't get to her until now -- where it's not just serious, but he's going to be present.

Jill is waiting for him now, comfortable in a pair of black leggings and a sweater that's a little too big for her, cream and cableknit.
]

Maybe it is.

[ Maybe it's been for a long time, too. But when he carries on, she understands where he's coming from but she doesn't know how to deal with any of this. She has to be okay, after all. ]

Really, I'm alright.

[ Maybe he needs to see her alive for himself? ]

It's alright.
You can't be everywhere, always. Neither can I.

[ But the knock has her stomach feel like things are floating in it. It makes her nervous, but she has to keep a normal look about her. She doesn't want him to get upset, especially not because she is upset. But she swallows hard and answers the door with a faint smile; her brows are knit in a way that's slightly concerned looking, but she mostly seems just as she'd said she was: alright. And perhaps a little relieved. ]

...hey.

[ He doesn't believe her. A part of it is his own guilt that's not her's to bear. It's a moment where things felt like they were going to come to a head. They were dangerously close to something — an elephant in the room at the dark corners unexplored but undeniable. Easy when their lives were as fast-paced as they were. Easy to be onto something else that seemed more pressing; life or death without ever having to answer to it. Sometimes the answers weren't there and sometimes they were within reach but locked away so far it was impossible.

He didn't want that to be them; where they were close but impossible to reach.

When she answers he can feel his stance stiffen, straightening up at attention as if it was someone of higher rank giving an order. His breath is stilled for a moment as he remembers to breath. She looks... alright as she says.

Her dark hair is like he remembers it, maybe slightly off to her original color and longer. His hair is about the same; longer and with some facial hair that's cut close to his face. It hasn't been so long since the days of Raccoon City, but that's how he remembers her most vividly. Not in passing or on occasion. Not before reaching out became impossible. There's a knot in his stomach as well trying not to think of it all despite it being the very reason he's here.
]

Hey. [ When he speaks, his stance relaxes slightly, taking a tentative step forward and physically reaching for her; a hand slowly testing the waters for a shoulder and his eyes sincere. They're softer in a moment before he speaks again. ]

So uh... ghosts.

[ He thinks it's silly as much as it does hold a weight. It's an attempt at an ice-breaker to try to quell nerves and mostly his own. He offers a half-smile, one that's reserved and with a small duck of his head. Carlos waits for an invitation and reception while he ultimately drops his hand to his side. ]

[ Carlos knows her well enough to not believe what she's saying about being alright. She knows that something is about to happen, whatever it may be. Personal and intimate, whatever it might be -- whatever she knows it might be. It's obviously about their relationship, but Jill is figuring that it's about guilt and about loss (or perceived loss) when she was declared MIA then KIA.

Part of her can't fathom that he'd love her, that he'd be in love with her. Maybe she won't let herself think and feel these things, maybe it's too hard to deal with. It's a fear that she can't quite pinpoint or gather up in her arms and examine, something she's afraid of learning because what if? What if it changes things between them, what if it changes things in general, that it can't be just the way it was any longer?

She looks at him for a moment longer than she should, examining him the same way he seems to be doing to her -- Jill doesn't really notice, though, because she's too busy doing the same. He looks less put-together than she remembers, although he probably does put effort into his hair it's just not... that soft, smooth look he sported in the past. And he has facial hair. It's a little weird to her, but only because he doesn't quite meet the standard of her memory and she's struggling to overlap now to then.

Jill is about to usher him in, but he goes to touch her. While Jill doesn't flinch, she does stiffen slightly and swallows hard enough that it might be visible. She lets him touch her, still, and takes one step closer just to make sure her subtle responses aren't what he judges her on.
]

Ghosts.

[ She says, her voice at least the one thing that's the same about her. His, too, sounds the same. Once his hand has been removed, though, she does invite him in and shuffles backward to make room for him to enter. Once he does, she shuts the door for him and locks it, indicating that she feels he might be here a while, not just for a single conversation. She looks behind her like someone else is here, toward the kitchen. ]

Um, can I get you anything? Water? Coffee? ...something stronger?
