hurt/comfort

HURT/COMFORT MEME
Hurt/comfort is a fan fiction genre that involves the physical pain or emotional distress of one character, who is cared for by another character. The injury, sickness or other kind of hurt allows an exploration of the characters and their relationship.

- Post with your character.
- Others respond

1. INJURY. You've been injured. Broken bones or bleeding out or maybe just a tiny little papercut. The choice is yours.
2. SICKNESS. You're sick and laid up in bed, at home or in a hospital. The severity is up to you.
3. FEAR/ANXIETY. Something is happening and you're scared beyond belief.
4. LOSS OF SENSES. Sight, touch, taste, hearing, smell, etc. You've lost some important sense or ability and now you're left to deal with it.
5. DESPAIR. Nothing is good or right anymore and you can't shake the depression. Maybe that friend of yours can help though...
6. BREAKUP. You've been dumped. You need someone to comfort you, possibly by the one who dumped you.
7. MAKE UP. Fight or break up, it's time to makeup.
8. RESCUED. You've just been held captive and/or tortured for however long and finally, someone has come to the rescue.
9. BAD ROMANCE. Fight, cheated on, abused, whatever the case is, someone else can clearly see you need comfort from someone who isn't your terrible lover tonight.
10. LOSS. You've experience a loss of some kind and need help getting through it.
11. INSANITY. You're seeing things that aren't really there, hearing voices, or you're just convinced you're at your wit's end finally and you're going to crack. Maybe someone can give you a helping hand.
12. TIRED. You've had a heard life recently and you're just worn too thin to really care anymore. There's no fight left in you anymore. Can someone help change your mind?
13. ADDICTION. Drugs, alcohol, sex, gambling, or any other type of addiction has got you in its grasp. First time or relapse. Will someone be able to save you?
14. INSOMNIA. You can't sleep anymore, no matter how hard you try. Maybe someone can give you company.
15. NIGHTMARES. Or, on the other end of the spectrum, you can't sleep without gruesome, horrible nightmares. Either someone is stuck in your dream with you, witnessing it or they're just waking you up, soothing you out of it.
16. BLACKMAIL. You've been caught doing something you shouldn't and you were blackmailed because of it
17. SEPARATION. You're going to be separated for awhile or were separated for a long time. Either make up for lost time or try to spend every last moment together.
18. VIOLATED. You've been violated in some way. Can include sexual overtones or not. Can someone help you through it?
19. STRANDED. You've been stranded somewhere remote, with no help of anyone finding you for awhile. Can you survive this together?
20. SINS. You're feeling the weight of your sins and guilt clearer than ever. Can someone give you absolution or lessen the ache any?
21. SECRET. It's difficult having to keep that secret of yours, be it a relationship or something you just don't want to share with anybody else. Maybe it's okay to talk about it now though...

What about monsters? Like people and things in the shadows you can't really see?

[ It could be said about their day to day with mutations and even things that can turn themselves invisible. ]

Well there's something that keeps coming back.
Not like a BOW or anything.
And I can't shake it.

You think that counts?

[ What a weird way to go about things, but he's not good at addressing things and when some of those things may or may not involve her and the two of them. ]
torsion: (clothesline.)

[personal profile] torsion 2025-05-24 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I believe in BOWs. And I believe that people can be terrible enough to be considered monsters.
I don't believe in traditional "monsters" though.

[ She wonders if he's attempting to go there, to talk about his former comrades or perhaps Wesker? Because she believes in that and she believes he's capable of haunting her from the grave somehow. ]

I suppose you could consider that being haunted.
I understand that sort, at least. In my own way.

[ She fears what he might say now. It could get deeper than she'd thought this conversation was going to. ]

[personal profile] platoon 2025-05-24 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
So no Dracula or Invisible Man for you, huh?

[ He jokes, but her first part gets him. ]

Yeah, people kind of monsters.
The ones you can't shake even when they're gone.
[ —or absent. ]

You got something that keeps coming back too, huh.

[ It's tempting to leave it at that. He's come this far and all things considered, he owes her more than beating around the bush. ]

You know it's just that...
I've been thinking about you.

I believe in invisible Hunters, at least.
I imagine there are nuances that I don't understand in the process to doing it to humans, if it's possible.

[ But she's answering too seriously, probably. It feels that way to her, anyway. ]

Yeah.
That's not wrong.

[ So who is he talking about? It definitely has to be someone in particular, or at least a group of someones. The UBCS? The Pursuer? Her palms itch and she wants to know.

There's a pause when he finally caves and Jill wants to ask him if he considers her a monster, but instead of that she just... waits. And tries to figure out what to say that isn't a snappy little joke or doesn't take him seriously -- or worse, takes him too seriously.
]

And I haunt you?

[ She ultimately decides on being direct, even if it could potentially be damaging to their relationship in some way. Whatever this is already felt like it might not be easy to come back from, so she'll at least try not to mince her words after this. ]

Or am I misunderstanding?

[personal profile] platoon 2025-05-24 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Somehow he didn't see that one coming and takes pause, letting out a small chuckle at the seriousness of her answer. ] Fair enough.
I've never seen an invisible human before either if that's what you're getting at.
Guess I shouldn't put it past anyone if they can do it to other things.

[ There's a pause between texts reading over her question. There were several things that haunted him, including the UBCS, pursuer, and... ]

What happened, yeah.

[ He thinks it over trying not to be too vague or too pushy. There wasn't an easy way to go about saying any of this. ]

Not being there. I...
I don't know what it was like and I don't know how to tell you that it haunts me.
That I couldn't find you.

[ He puts a hand to the back of his head overthinking everything surely. ]
torsion: (pic#14318564)

[personal profile] torsion 2025-05-24 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She's just trying to be honest with him since it seems like that's the kind of thing he's going for right now. Otherwise he wouldn't have kept pushing on the question. ]

I imagine a viral infection could potentially do it.
They can do a lot of different things.

[ But that conversation feels like it's not important anymore, that it's dying out. She nearly starts to reply to the rest of it, but then she sees what he has to say next. It garners another pause on her end ]

I'm sorry.
I don't know what I could have done differently.
Maybe fought harder against it, but by the time I was in Kijuju I already thought I would never be free.
I don't know.
I'm sorry.

[ She doesn't know what to say and realistically, she knows it isn't her fault or something to apologize over, but it can't be helped. She wants him to know he was in her thoughts, too. Still is. ]

[personal profile] platoon 2025-05-24 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah.
They can can't they.

[ He doesn't mean to be so dour, but the weight is starting to push down. Not her, but everything that's happened. The reconnection, the distance, and then hearing that she's been killed and come back? That was a lot to take in. But he doesn't want to put it on her. It was his to bear, but he needed a release. She had a right to know. ]

Jill, it's not your fault.
I should have known.
I should have come for you.

[ But the reality is, he misses her terribly. There had been a build up for a while, in dreams and not being able to shake her and what they had become. What they still might become and could. It was complicated. ]

I still would.
I'd come for you now if you...

If you need me.

[ I need you is what the reality of it is. ]
torsion: (pic#14337277)

[personal profile] torsion 2025-05-24 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She figures that line of conversation is dead now. While it might be worthwhile to talk about (in her opinion), what they're talking about now is heavier and more important. She'd never really discussed what happened to her with him -- not with anyone, really, not directly anyway. Jill thinks she probably owes it to him. ]

Yeah and I should've been alright, too.
If you'd known.
If you'd known you would have. I know that much.

[ She's missed him, too, but things felt so complicated now. Everything felt... strange and different, like time had been stolen from her. ]

I know you would.
But
Do you need me?

[ That's what it seemed like to her. Not just that he was offering to lend an ear and a shoulder. And even if he was, it still felt... awkward. Wrong? Not quite. All of it was jumbled and her heart's beating so much faster now that she doesn't know what to say. ]

[ It might be interesting for another time — an easy way to dive into something more serious. He could afford to be better at this sort of thing. Jill was always someone that he enjoyed talking to but he misses her in ways that he doesn't always address in earnest.

It's what she says next that manages to halt him in his tracks. There's only one part he sees right now.
]

Are you?

[ alright. It's probably the most direct he's ever been with her outside of surface flirting and teasing. It was important — she, was important. ]

Yeah.
I think I do.

[ It's been a long time coming and while he mostly needs to know that she's okay, he needs her in ways that he can't fully explain. ]

[ She's always up for talking work, since it's her main interest. Sometimes it just isn't appropriate -- like when your friend tells you that you haunt them. He'd at least tried to explain it in a way that wasn't insulting or hurtful, but if she does have that kind of hold on him... it was probably difficult to find the right words. ]

I'm as alright as I can be.

[ Which almost isn't an answer and she knows it. ]

I didn't know.
Do you want to come over?
Or meet up somewhere?

[ This doesn't feel right over text. ]

[personal profile] platoon 2025-05-24 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Jill has always had the kind of hold on him that was unshakable. No matter how far they physically were or how much time had passed, it only got stronger. ]

That's not what I meant.

[ It's getting dangerously serious and he's ready to move. ]

I'm already on my way over.

[ It was when she said that she should've been. It was something that shook him and uprooted him where he couldn't sit still on this. ]

We could still meet somewhere if you would prefer.
Either way, I'm gonna show up for you.

You're worth it.

[ He needs her to know this. ]

[personal profile] torsion 2025-05-24 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She doesn't know this. While she still thinks there's some playful teasing in their relationship and that they're important to each other, she doesn't -- or didn't -- realize just what she meant to him. Maybe she should, though. Especially after he went out into the city and to the hospital for her sake, not even knowing if he'd find any kind of cure or anything to help her. ]

What did you mean?

[ She knew what he meant. ]

I see.
I'll be waiting for you, then.

[ Jill doesn't think that's happening right now. She thinks he just needs someone to talk to, to air his grief to. Especially over the fact she'd been considered KIA. That shakes someone up if they care about you, but she can't even begin to fathom the reality of how much it's uprooted him. ]

We can meet at my place.

[ It feels like it could be dangerous to meet somewhere like her place rather than mutual ground, but it's not the kind of "danger" most people would consider. ]

Is something in particular bringing this on?

[ Not being dead, not being lost, being within arm's reach... She knows the answer to all of this. It's just easier to ask the question and hope for it to be something different. ]

[ The past is what it was and that's just it. It clung to him still. It's why he wants to move this to a way he can see her — a way he needs her. ]

Jill

[ Simple, singular, and knowing. He doesn't want to keep this up through text, but he didn't exactly think this through. Carlos just went and acted on impulse. He was drawn to her, maybe like a moth to the flame. Whatever it was, whatever it lead to, he knew he had to see her.

He lightly jogs to speed things up when he's given permission to proceed to her place. He's casual in a zipper up hoodie that's olive, black t-shirt underneath and a pair of black cargo pants. A pair of dark grey sneakers finish the outfit as he nears her apartment.
]

Maybe it's just ghosts.

[ It's the he realizes he hadn't responded to her first question. He figures he could explain when he got there, and yet... ]

I just want to know you're okay.

I'm sorry I haven't exactly been around

But I am now

[ With that he approaches her door and gives a brisk knock. ]

[ She's pretty sure something is going on, something much deeper than just the words they were saying. ]

Carlos?

[ Unsure of where they're going, she gets the feeling the depth of all of this is going to be deeper than expected. The fact that he needed to see her so soon and the start of the conversation should've clued her in on it, but it didn't get to her until now -- where it's not just serious, but he's going to be present.

Jill is waiting for him now, comfortable in a pair of black leggings and a sweater that's a little too big for her, cream and cableknit.
]

Maybe it is.

[ Maybe it's been for a long time, too. But when he carries on, she understands where he's coming from but she doesn't know how to deal with any of this. She has to be okay, after all. ]

Really, I'm alright.

[ Maybe he needs to see her alive for himself? ]

It's alright.
You can't be everywhere, always. Neither can I.

[ But the knock has her stomach feel like things are floating in it. It makes her nervous, but she has to keep a normal look about her. She doesn't want him to get upset, especially not because she is upset. But she swallows hard and answers the door with a faint smile; her brows are knit in a way that's slightly concerned looking, but she mostly seems just as she'd said she was: alright. And perhaps a little relieved. ]

...hey.

[personal profile] platoon 2025-05-25 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He doesn't believe her. A part of it is his own guilt that's not her's to bear. It's a moment where things felt like they were going to come to a head. They were dangerously close to something — an elephant in the room at the dark corners unexplored but undeniable. Easy when their lives were as fast-paced as they were. Easy to be onto something else that seemed more pressing; life or death without ever having to answer to it. Sometimes the answers weren't there and sometimes they were within reach but locked away so far it was impossible.

He didn't want that to be them; where they were close but impossible to reach.

When she answers he can feel his stance stiffen, straightening up at attention as if it was someone of higher rank giving an order. His breath is stilled for a moment as he remembers to breath. She looks... alright as she says.

Her dark hair is like he remembers it, maybe slightly off to her original color and longer. His hair is about the same; longer and with some facial hair that's cut close to his face. It hasn't been so long since the days of Raccoon City, but that's how he remembers her most vividly. Not in passing or on occasion. Not before reaching out became impossible. There's a knot in his stomach as well trying not to think of it all despite it being the very reason he's here.
]

Hey. [ When he speaks, his stance relaxes slightly, taking a tentative step forward and physically reaching for her; a hand slowly testing the waters for a shoulder and his eyes sincere. They're softer in a moment before he speaks again. ]

So uh... ghosts.

[ He thinks it's silly as much as it does hold a weight. It's an attempt at an ice-breaker to try to quell nerves and mostly his own. He offers a half-smile, one that's reserved and with a small duck of his head. Carlos waits for an invitation and reception while he ultimately drops his hand to his side. ]
torsion: (flying cross armbar.)

[personal profile] torsion 2025-05-25 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Carlos knows her well enough to not believe what she's saying about being alright. She knows that something is about to happen, whatever it may be. Personal and intimate, whatever it might be -- whatever she knows it might be. It's obviously about their relationship, but Jill is figuring that it's about guilt and about loss (or perceived loss) when she was declared MIA then KIA.

Part of her can't fathom that he'd love her, that he'd be in love with her. Maybe she won't let herself think and feel these things, maybe it's too hard to deal with. It's a fear that she can't quite pinpoint or gather up in her arms and examine, something she's afraid of learning because what if? What if it changes things between them, what if it changes things in general, that it can't be just the way it was any longer?

She looks at him for a moment longer than she should, examining him the same way he seems to be doing to her -- Jill doesn't really notice, though, because she's too busy doing the same. He looks less put-together than she remembers, although he probably does put effort into his hair it's just not... that soft, smooth look he sported in the past. And he has facial hair. It's a little weird to her, but only because he doesn't quite meet the standard of her memory and she's struggling to overlap now to then.

Jill is about to usher him in, but he goes to touch her. While Jill doesn't flinch, she does stiffen slightly and swallows hard enough that it might be visible. She lets him touch her, still, and takes one step closer just to make sure her subtle responses aren't what he judges her on.
]

Ghosts.

[ She says, her voice at least the one thing that's the same about her. His, too, sounds the same. Once his hand has been removed, though, she does invite him in and shuffles backward to make room for him to enter. Once he does, she shuts the door for him and locks it, indicating that she feels he might be here a while, not just for a single conversation. She looks behind her like someone else is here, toward the kitchen. ]

Um, can I get you anything? Water? Coffee? ...something stronger?
