So tired and sleepy, you just wanna catch a few z's. Don't worry your pretty little sleep head, someone else is here to keep you company into dreamland. Though whether it's comforting, romantic, melancholic, or perhaps even something a bit more sinister, depends entirely upon who is tucking who in.

Maybe your dreams won't be so sweet tonight.

He was always meant to be a guardian. It was what he had been trained to do, and it was what he felt best doing. So in silence, he seated himself in a good position to keep watch, a knife drawn from his boot to both occupy himself with whittling and be close at hand if anyone were to suddenly become brave enough to attack.

Loki was in no mood for attack, not right now. Right now, he needed time alone and away from everything, and that was why he chose that particular remote area of Midgard to prop himself up against a tree and sigh heavily. He was exhausted, but the sense that he was not entirely alone here kept him awake for now. He had his knives and magic if need be, but honestly, it wasn't as if he was here to do anything wrong. Not yet, at any rate.

"I only intend to rest weary feet," the god called out, as he slid down to the base of the tree. "But try anything, and you will regret it."

"I'm not averse to sharing my fire," Merrick answered, "but if you intend to share the meal, then you contribute to it." But the accent. Something in his words stirred a little familiarity. "Where are you from, stranger?"

"I am in no need," came Loki's response as he leaned further back, the tree too solid and awkward for a proper slumber but it was better than curling up in the dirt. The man didn't concern him much, but he was averse to sharing space with a common mortal. "And that is not of your concern. I am not from here, and that is all that you will ever need to know."

Merrick hid a smirk. The self-importance in those few words... He chuckled under his breath. "Then maybe you're too good to share my fire," he murmured, amusement in his tone.

Shouldn't he be in bed? Marion checks the clock then groans. No. Still up. So with her mused up hair Marion extracts herself from bed and grabs the blanket she had bought just for him. A big luxurious ad soft looking green one that just screamed it was meant for him.

Then she pads off to find him carrying the blanket over one arm. He needs rest and she will just gently encourage him.

As if he didn't need to be too predictable, Loki had his books strewn about, one heavy tome being read via candlelight. He was weary - exhausted really, it had been possibly weeks since his last full night's sleep and it felt like even longer - but there were important tasks to finish first before any manner of shut-eye could happen. He was strict on that, at the very least.

He flipped to the next page when he heard footsteps, and he tried not to sigh, attempting to focus on the pages but the words were starting to blur. After leaning back and rubbing his eyes, Loki cursed quietly under his breath. This was going to take longer than he'd thought, and he was certainly in no mood for her conversation.

She isn't talking. She just pads up behind him peering over his shoulder carefully. The words are blurred together since she needs sleep just as much as he does. The full moon had beaten her up again.

Instead of asking him when he will be done or asking him to just stop and rest she tucks the blanket around his shoulders.

For when he is ready. She cannot order him to do anything.

Then she takes over her favorite chair and balances her chin in her hands as she watches and waits.

He was all ready to tell her to leave, that he had work to do and her presence would only be a nuisance, but her silence held his tongue for the moment. Save for one heavy sigh as he heard her footsteps approach, but honesty he was a bit too weary to start up a full argument at this hour.

Still, it was on the tip of his tongue. The moment she approached, Loki decided that would be it, and he would shoo her back to her chambers-- but instead there was a warm blanket draped over his shoulders, and further silence. Puzzled, Loki hesitated before drawing a hand up to trace a fingertip along the fabric. He had to admit ... he was not expecting that.

Eventually he sighed, leaving the blanket where it was as he returned to his book. He didn't look up, he already knew she'd be staying there with the foolish pretense of keeping him company. "This is unnecessary."

The fact she got something like this for him? It was silly but when she had seen it she thought of him. She thought of him even more after feeling how comfortable it was.

"You're tired," she points out. "You also have more work to do. I just wanted to be sure you would at least be comfortable."

That doesn't explain why she is still up. She rubs her face with one hand. "I'll be quite."

Well.

True, Loki was tired. But he wasn't going to let something silly and pathetic as mere paperwork and research get the better of him. At the very least, he vowed he was going to finish the next ten encryptions, and then he could consider resting his eyes for a while. Whether or not she chose to stay in that chair the whole while ... that was her own volition.

"I work better in solitude," Loki responded, but he left the blanket around his shoulders, his pen returning to the old text to write and write some more. "Surely your bed is more comfortable."

pre-Thor?

While Thor enjoys a good hunt with Sif and the warriors three, it's also nice to get away from the court with his brother only.

They're in pursuit of some manner of wild animal which has been terrorising nearby villages and decided to stop for the night, if only to extend their leave of absence. Thor, after all, far prefers hunting to the stuffy councils his father has him sit on. Peace may be good for the realm, but it makes for extremely dull conversation.

Their campfire is beginning to burn low, but Thor finds sleep eluding him.

"Brother, are you awake?"

Loki prefered these outings. When they traveled with the Warriors, Thor's attention was usually given to his friends, and Loki was oft left behind, told to remember his place. It wasn't always, but it was frequent enough for Loki to let himself focus on it and stew in his frustration. That was why he was at least a little more eager for this adventure - he had been in the middle of his book, but he could get back to it upon their return.

The animal had yet to be tracked down, but they were well on their way. It was a longer, more tiring journey than what Loki was expecting however, and the fallen tree trunk he was leaning against wasn't helping the ache in his back. He was weary, chin propped in one hand as he tried to keep his eyes open, but the burning embers of their fire was almost like a sweet lullaby.

Of course, Thor's voice startled him awake, and Loki rubbed his eyes as he straightened his position.

"I am now," he answered, raising his arms to stretch his muscles. "What is so important to discuss that you had to wake me?"

Thor rolled his shoulders thoughtfully, starting up into the dark sky.

He was not accustomed to deep thought; indeed he usually had little use for it. He was skilled enough at hunting and fighting that instinct and strength served him well, and he often found himself growing bored if there were long stretches where he lacked anything to do.

But he was not incapable of it, his deep thoughts were like icebergs; large and slow, usually moving out of sight. He liked to think Loki's thoughts, in comparison, were like lightning, fast and deadly.

"When do you think father will name his heir?"

It was not a question he would have asked the warriors three, or even Sif. To them he boasted that his father's mind must be made up already. He did not like them to know of that he himself was not as assured of the outcome as he would like.

Now that was a topic often discussed, but not often enjoyed. At least, not by Loki's standpoint. It would either result in arguments between them, or awkward silence, either of which would make the rest of their journey unpleasant. Loki leaned back and watched the fire before them, deep in thought. What was the best way to approach such a heavy topic, that wouldn't set either of them off?

It was probably impossible. Loki shrugged his shoulders.

"You are too eager," he answered, his voice as tired as he was, but now wasn't the time to get any rest. Not when Thor would go off on this tangent again. Was he excited again? Probably - Thor usually was.

"Do you not know how he is by now?" Loki continued, a hand lifting to rub his eyes. "He makes us wait, and judges our behaviours to ensure the decision he has already made is the right one."
