It was over a century ago now that I fell in love with Nimmie Amee. But I do not love her anymore- I believe my love for her was lost with my original heart. It is the only explanation for why, despite having gained a new heart from the Wizard, I am satisfied never seeing her again.

As for her, she has married another man. The two are far happier than she and I ever would have been.

Love makes us do things we never imagined possible. They say that we never choose love but that it chooses us. It is hard to understand this expression until you find love has chosen you.

It has certainly chosen me when it comes to family.

[ He understands the sentiment, of course. He hadn't chosen to love Emma, or Maelle, or Sophie anymore than he chooses to breathe in and out. And despite that he had still felt chosen by them, somehow. Every time he earned a smile from Maelle, or a laugh from Sophie, or a squeeze of Emma's hand, he felt as though he'd won some unknown, unknowable lottery.

But to lack choice entirely, to be made to do something whether he wishes it or no— it grates at him, it always has. Every choice he can't make for himself feels like one more long-reaching finger of the Paintress' shadow brushing over the sun and dimming even the brightest of days. ]
