I find that a person's hands tell you much about them. Scars, how one keeps their nails, calluses. Here, can I see yours?

[Johnny holds out one of his own hands in invitation.]

[The suggestion is enough to give Glenn pause. It's... not an unappealing subject, but the worries in the back of his mind do not quiet. The potential (negative) repercussions are not something he really ever accustoms to.

[But after some idle peering at Johnny's hand, Glenn slowly strips away the slightly-glossy, thin material of his black glove and reveals a hand covered in overlapping scars from fingertips to wrist, in stretch mark-like shapes. Miraculously, his fingernails - and the nail beds beneath - are entirely unaffected. They're kept short and rounded.

[But he offers it, touching with great hesitance and watching the way they eventually make contact. Probably. It's not like he can feel any tactile contact for the most part.]

Pardon me. I cannot imagine that this is particularly pleasant to look at.

[The scars themselves are myriad, assorted of raised and indented, dark marks that clearly struggled to heal, and have yet to blend in with skin tone. And yet, despite all that, there aren't any callouses to be found.

[For now, eye contact is even further off the table than usual.]

[Grantaire puts a hand to his chest, mock appalled.]

And spoil all the mystery?

[Pfft. As if he isn't flattered, even if it's just a line. It's a line with somewhere it's going: that's nice enough. Grantaire's smile curls up at one edge and he grandiosely offers the same hand (the left, his dominant, a source of sinister jokes when he feels inclined) to be inspected.

His hands do tell stories, if Johnny is in fact looking for them: well-worn first knuckles tell that he's a fighter; the tough top and meat of his palm hints that he prefers savate et canne to solely fistfighting, while the small but equally sturdy one on the inside of his middle finger murmurs that sketching and painting sometimes win out over either as a pursuit.

Though, that last doesn't require the calluses. R keeps his nails more or less short, and scrubs his hands before going out where he might clasp another's, but his hands are never quite...neat. It might take magic to remove every bit of charcoal that hides under cuticles -- or perhaps today it's ink or pigment that's stubbornly dying his skin. And Grantaire isn't known for being particularly careful with himself anyway: little (...mostly) scars scattered across both sides are from fighting, but there are also some from slamming a glass or bottle down in emphasis or temper, or taking a bet to do something stupid.

He feels awkwardly cognizant of how rough-looking he must be, hand held by a man who so far seems much more refined. Both in custom and appearance.

So, obviously, he deflects.]
