[ it's a marriage of political interests. denji's treasonous father had gambled his fortunes away and plotted with bandits to steal from the king. and when the yoshida family managed to stop and subjugate the rebels, he committed suicide before he could be questioned by the royal court.

there wasn't much to denji's lineage to begin with; his mother died at childbirth and his father struggled to stay relevant within the court, and when his gold ran dry, he tried to sell off his son for extra gold - and he probably would have anyway, had not for his failed insurrection. by the end of the week, seven full days after his father committed suicide, the king had taken upon himself to order the execution of the rest of his lineage. by the time word of the rebellion reached yoshida's ears, he'll not know anything about denji's family except for his given name.

— it must have been pity. yoshida's mother begged for the young boy to be spared, and that they would take him in. yoshida has always just listened and done what he was told, so when his mother told him that he is to wed denji into the family, despite not knowing anything about him or even what family he's from, yoshida kept his thoughts in the deep crevices of his mind where it can't even reach his face - knows his mother would easily see through him, and, well: mother always knows best.

his in his finest fabrics, hanging heavy on his shoulders and body. the ceremonies have come and gone with the kind of fanfare that he was frankly disassociating throughout, and not once was he able to see what denji looked like - his fiance, his spouse after they consummate. he never thought about how stupid traditions are now that it was forced upon him. but yoshida is fine with the burden of responsibility; it makes him feel important, and it makes him feel like he's important to both his mother and the kingdom as a whole. this marriage -- even though he had no say in it, is proof of his loyalty.

he steps into their bedchambers, and it's dimly lit with warm candle light. there's festive music still playing far in the distance of the castle walls, but he shuts all the noise off as he steps over to the vaguely-transparent drapes over the canopy frame of the king-sized bed. the room is decorated in gold and red, the colors of union, fortune, and happiness - it even smells like fresh floral, likely from the excessive arrangements set up all over the castle, and even now he catches whiffs of roses as a breeze disrupts the light fabric of the canopy.

it's sheer enough that he can see denji's smaller frame - only his silhouette, really - shaking, and if he focuses on listening, he's certain that he's sniffling under there.

crying, maybe? yoshida almost forgets that denji is a few years younger than him.

it makes sense - denji is the last remaining of his family, and when he's wed into yoshida's family, his bloodline will be gone. that, and he has no one else to rely on - not that his father was much of a man from what yoshida's heard. he doesn't think the boy - his betrothed - should be so broken up about such a deadbeat, loser of a father, who was going to sell him off anyway, but maybe he shouldn't be so quick to judge.

he opens up the sheer drapes and finally meets denji's face.

he's young - and he's got a handsome face with red eyes that seem to glitter and shine unfairly beautifully despite the fact that he's clearly crying or holding back tears. the way he looks at yoshida makes him want to reach over and pet him, instinctively, like he's a cowering puppy. he's scooted back to the far end of the bed in a wedding gown that should have been for a woman, and it's too big for a boy of denji's size. he can't help but think that the court is trying to humiliate him on top of everything, like they can't punish his father in life so they'll torture his son in his death.

yoshida sits at the edge of the bed and closes the drapes behind him, moving closer. ] Hey... I'm Yoshida Hirofumi. Did... they tell you what was happening, Denji?
