(Probably a weird suggestion…. Or couple of suggestions…. But! 1. Abduction by space aliens (either good natured or nefarious ones) 2. Something like wolfenstein where the Germans/HYDRA won. 3. Modern day but they hunt monsters. 4. Modern day but Bucky is a vampire. Or Steve is a vampire. Or they are both vampires which explains the modern day thing. 5. There is no serum but Steve still joins the war as a driver or a civilian aid worker. 6. HYDRA found a way to neutralize the serum. 7. Bucky comes back from the war but the HYDRA experiments made him a werewolf. 8. The whole world is supernatural. Steve is psychic or magic. Bucky is a vampire or werewolf or he’s clairvoyant. 9. It’s modern day and they visit Jurassic Park. Maybe Steve won a contest or something.)
