( 2 ) subtle touches; helping her down from the carriage, touching her hand in a crowded ballroom, whatever it is, tonight you're communicating with small gestures and subtle glances.

( 3 ) note passing; have something to tell the one you like but no chance to do so in person? surely there is a servant willing to run an errand or two for you...

( 4 ) awkward carriage rides; you're alone in the carriage without a chaperone. what to make of it?

Methos didn't always choose the life of a man of high standing. While he had a preference for the academic like doctors, scholars, and the like. At this point in time, he'd opted for the even lower profile of a butler.

The butler in charge of the household of this particular well to do Regency family. He stood at the far wall, watching the ballroom as the quests trailed in. He'd occasionally direct a servant, housekeeper, or footman to assist someone or bring out more food trays, but mostly he watched those in attendance considering their similarities to those of the aristocracy that he'd known in the past. Some things never seemed to change.

There was a pause before River slowly smiled, taking that final step and descending into the dimly lit corridor. With a turn, she presented herself to him, as though she had been saving the best til last - for despite the demure intentions of her era-appropriate gown, there was no denying River's less than modest figure.

"You think because I am in the servant's corridor, I am lost?" she said, the smile not fading from her lips. "How very presumptuous of you, sir."

It wasn't the first time she and Methos had pretended not to know each other. It was certainly fun on all counts, especially when it came to seeing who would give up character first.
