WHAT TO DO:

OPTIONS:

1. Hosting: This is your dinner party, and you’re panicking, trying to make sure absolutely everything is going smoothly. Time to conscript one of your guests to help out!

2. Sitting with a Stranger: You’ve been seated beside someone you’ve never met, but this meal’s going to be incredibly awkward if you just don’t say anything to them the whole time. Make introductions--why are each of you here at the party?

3. Bad Manners: One or both of you really doesn’t belong in this posh setting. You’re making a mockery of the refined setting with your table manners, your clothing and your overall demeanor.

4. What Is That?: There’s a food in front of you on the platter--at least, you’re pretty sure it’s food and not a centerpiece. Beyond that, you have no clue exactly what it is. Do you dare to try it?

4.5 No, Really, WHAT Is That?!: You’re at the sort of amazing dinner party that Hannibal Lecter throws--the wine’s just a little too red, the meat’s nice and fatty, and you’ve just realized that this salad dressing might be made with Soylent Green.

5. Dancing: You’re not just at a banquet, you’re at a ball. It’s time to convince the partner of your choice to take a spin on the dance floor. Do you even know how to waltz, bro?

6. Intrigue: One or both of you are undercover, secretly armed to the teeth under your formal attire. How do you keep this a secret? How does the other person find out? (This option is also totally great for superheroes attending the party in their mundane identity!)

7. Poison: Midway through one of the courses, someone on the other end of the table turns purple and passes out (or possibly even passes away!) at the table. It looks like they’ve been poisoned, and you have a mystery on your hands. What do?

8. Dessert: After a delicious meal, there’s something truly decadent being put on the table. Does this make up for the tiny portions of the previous courses? Do you tease your partner with the chocolate-covered strawberries, or share a spoonful of tiramisu?

9. Wildcard!: I know I forgot something, probably several somethings, so here's your wildcard for whatever else you can fit into this meme.

[Why can't Diplomatic Events ever go smoothly?

An hour ago Captain James T. Kirk thought the worst he'd have to deal with during this event was a mild faux pas explaining his allergies away to the hosting species. He hadn't expected to get pulled aside and warned about a planned assassination attempt. If something happened at this gathering, there could be outright war in half the quadrant.

Is Jim a hundred percent certain his new companion is on the level? No, but she can break him in half if she wants to so he's not stupid enough to say as much to her face. Spock's looking into it. Either way, Jim can't waste time. So he's acting as if this is fact and has agreed to take on his strange new companion as one of the many Federation diplomats he'd brought to this event, even if that's a bald faced lie.

They're walking side by side from the main hall to the event room where all the dinner tables have been set up. Jim's gaze sweeps the room.]

What's the plan if we catch this guy...? You open fire in here and take him out, it's Still going to cause an intergalactic incident.

They were supposed to come to this filmmaker's gala together since this is more up her alley than his-- she's always been the one more in tune with fashion and gossip, so this should be the best place for it. Too late to back out and her busy with 'other obligations' after he'd cleared his schedule means he's stuck in the weeds. Hell, Alex doesn't know the first thing about being behind the scenes, so he's been doing a lot of smiling and nodding along. He likes films! He does, but the creative bits? Yeah, he leaves that to the creatives.

He's no stranger to going to events his mom wants presidential support but can't find the time or clearance to do it herself. At the very least, it gives him the opportunity to dress a bit more fashion forward and ditch the standard suit-and-tie combo that most functions call for. By the time dinner rolls around, he's a few cocktails in and can't help the audible sigh as someone in the same age-decade sits beside him. ]

I'm not gonna lie, I thought I'd be stuck sitting next to somebody with no common ground. [ He leans in a little closer, almost conspiratorial: ] I am super out of my depth here, man.

[It's odd for Joshua to be flying solo at this kind of shindig. Sure, his folks are here, but he's a grown ass adult for one thing. For another, he's well aware that his Dad wouldn't appreciate Josh bothering him. Usually he's got his sisters with him, or on rare occasions one of his friends. Tonight though everyone else is tied up so it's just Joshua Washington wandering the gala and making nice with all the social elites about.

No familiar faces in other important people's kids he's met before, so no chance to get into any kind of mischief on the fringes of the whole affair. So it's a pleasant surprise that there's an open seat next to a guy who looks like he's close enough to Josh's age. Even more of one when he gets addressed directly.]

Oh yeah? [One corner of Josh's mouth lifts in a subtle grin he's trying to stifle. He's supposed to be on 'best behavior' out at shit like this, so the no filter jokes have to stay in his head.] You look like you're doing alright and that's half the battle at these events. First time?

[ Alex tries to be subtle about it, really he does, with his assessing gaze flicking from Josh to where Bob Washington sits toward the far end of the table and back. ] Me too, man.

He's got less than 0 pull anywhere. Distantly, Josh is aware that this means A Lot of eyes are going to be on them, so he'd better not fuck this up. He's still got to travel back home with his old man after this and he'd rather the trip be a decent one.]
