TYPES OF SCENES

ANGST.
① Injury / illness → Your character has become injured or ill! To what extent is the mun's choice.

[ this wasn't the first time a job had gone completely sideways, leaving them stranded. it was more like the fifth or sixth time. not that anyone was keeping count. they find themselves in a corporate haven of a planet this time—a place where tight security, high-tech amenities, and an obvious class divide meant bounty hunting was less utilized. the far flung outposts on the edge of colonized space was always their best bet; that is, if they're looking for small fries. but here? well, let's just say faye has a good feeling they're about to catch wind of a rather lucrative bounty.

another not-first: she ends up being right. the bounty roll updates and showcases a crime lord with the largest payoff she's ever seen, so large that it brings a sparkle to her eye. a sparkle of awe! it's enough to fix all of her—well, all of their problems. and so far it felt as though luck was truly on their side when they soon discover said crime lord would be attending a high-society gala taking place nearby later that evening.

spike need not ask just how faye managed to steal an invitation to the event. she comes and goes at her own volition, they know this, and some secrets are best left as such. ]

We'll need some disguises.

[ —and by "disguises", she means something classy and fitting of their surroundings. ]

Do you have anything other than that boring suit of yours? Something, I don't know, distinguished?

It's not boring,

[Comes Spike's immediate, petulant protest. How he keeps getting dragged along with this woman's wiles is beyond him, but here he is anyway, hot on the tail of high-digit woolongs. And now here she is, complaining about his suit. It's a good looking suit, damnit.]

Besides, the best kind of disguises are the ones that let you hide in plain sight. Which a perfectly good suit always does.

You just want to draw attention.

[And she will, he's sure. He's going to have to think about how to use that to their advantage.]

It's boring.

[ faye returns with equal immediacy but her words get lost in his rambling. she shrugs it off with a sigh, waiting for him to finish, watching from behind her cigarette. if what he's implying is not coming along and getting his half of the reward, she'll more than happily take it for herself. does he really want to risk getting it rubbed in his face later on? ]

You're wrong. It'll draw more attention because where we're going is very high class. What you find perfectly good about the suit is just not good enough to the ritzy and affluent guests that will be attending. I, at least, have outfits that are appropriate.

[ one last drag before she snuffs her cigarette. speaking of, time to go find that befitting dress. she comes to a stand and pivots towards the broom closet her room, as if she were finished speaking to him, but the conversation isn't over. ]

We have to look like we have money, Spike. That's how we blend in.

[Ugh. That's yet another thing she's right about. Spike isn't about to let her have it, though. Not when he still has the energy to complain, which is almost always, actually.]

There's other people to be at a fancy gala, you know. Less visible people.

A delivery guy, a janitor— it doesn't always have to be glitz and glamor.

[His own cigarette twitches between his clenched teeth as he talks, wagging like a scolding finger. Yeah, right, as-if. He can't imagine her pulling off the part of a janitor if she tried, but it's worth it to argue while he re-scans his closet in his mind, apparently.]

Oh, please. A janitor? A delivery guy? [ her voice carries down the corridor. what you don't hear is her sifting through piles of clothes. ] You think the guy we're after takes meetings with the sanitation department?

[ we all know she'd make for a hot janitor but slate gray is really not her color... however, red? paired with her dark hair, fair skin, green eyes? oh, she knows—hard to say no to a woman in red. alluring. like a venus flytrap. that's the angle she's trying for, close to it anyway. all part of the plan. ]

Would you rather be strategic, or be reckless and risk losing the bounty?

[ the word reckless is very pointed. at spike. any comeback will go ignored—she plucks two separate yet curiously similar dresses from the pile and holds them out. hmm. she settles for one and chucks the other, then starts to strip while continuing the conversation. ]

The guy really likes to dance so there's going to be dancing involved.

[ she means them, dancing. together. it's part of the plan, man!! ]

[Only because Faye isn't looking does Spike make little mocking faces while she goes on a bout his choices of fake careers. He sways with his slow cowboy stride and saunters on down the hall, leaning against the port jam so she can maybe not have to yell. Just... he also makes sure to turn on his heel, leaning on it so he's facing the hallway. He'll never hear the end of it if Faye has the chance to accuse him of peeping.]

I dunno. You're starting to sound a lot like you just want an excuse to dance with me.

[Ugh. He really doesn't have a lot in his closet and he doesn't even really want to get dressed up anyway, but there's not a lot of easier, less annoying solutions he can come up with. They're both in too much hot water with Jet lately over property damage to take a more aggressive approach.

...Huh. He looks up, not really at anything as much as into his own memory. There might still be something...]

[ she's busy smoothing out wrinkles and adjusting the dress where needed by the time spike reaches her room. his leisurely stroll went undetected, therefore she doesn't realize he's there until she nearly bumps into him with the same idea of walking over to his room. she blinks in mock disbelief over such a ridiculous idea, pausing for a moment to finish pinning her hair back. her arms drop only to be folded across her chest. ]

Do you even know how to dance?

[ oh, great. he's doing that weird spacing off thing he does—and he still hasn't changed. ]

You have nothing else to wear? Really?

Hey— I'm working on it. I've got something.

[He sounds kind of defensive about it. He isn't lying, he just sounds kind of defensive. Waving her off with his hand, he starts tromping back toward his own room as well, trying to stave off the suspicion she'll follow.]

Just because I don't dance doesn't mean I can't.

Uh huh, sure—and just because I don’t believe you doesn't mean I’m wrong.

[ she does follow him for all of five seconds, up until midway when she stops to watch him stroll back into his room.

maybe, finally, he's changing his outfit. and she'd hate to be accused of peeping of all things... ]

Can you work on it a little faster then? The gala starts in two hours.

[He's got something. Something fancy enough that was never really meant to stand out in a crowd, but it's good enough. Besides, he's not the one who needs to stand out; he just needs to look appropriate next to a well-dressed lady. But with all the things he removes from it, there is one little problem they still have to solve.

Meandering toward the doorway in a black 3-piece (subtle, sharp-angled, no frills but not cheap, either) adjusting the cuffs, Spike ventures;]

You wouldn't happen to have any fancy ties in your little hoard, would ya?

[And, with a smile that seems like he very much thinks it'll get him out of any scolding he'd get for calling it a hoard, he sweetens the deal;]

The whole going-together-in-disguise thing only works if I match your dress.

[ to say she isn't surprised would be a fat lie. maybe even pleasantly surprised might be what she's feeling because spike has made the effort to actually play the part. with her rather than against her. there's a first for everything! when he rounds the corner and reveals his outfit, faye silently issues a once-over before rolling her shoulders in a shrug. and while she may appear flippant over this reveal, she doesn't deny herself the moment of appreciation that spike looks... good. ]

That's definitely better than anything else you've got lying around. Nice job, lunkhead.

[ if he's quick, he'll catch the bite behind her smirk when he labels her stuff a hoard. hmph. ]

Guess I'll check my little hoard and see, but I doubt I have one.

[ after some rummaging, and a moment of huh i thought i lost these..., faye comes across a lonesome little wrinkled tie. she pulls it out to survey it. simple, black. no stains but a little frumpy. she holds it out. ]

Well, there's this, no idea where it came from but it's all yours if you want it.

[Spike sticks his tongue out at Faye as she walks away, while she can't see him, being so very mature and manly about it all..

But at least this works out. It's not something he's particularly pleased about doing, but it does get the job done. And if they can get a job done without racking up a huge damages bill for once, maybe, just maybe they'll have about three weeks free of Jet's reminders that they are in fact the reason the ship never has any god damn money.

He's right, but it's not like Spike can just let that stand.

When she produces a tie, Spike looks it over carefully, taking it between two fingers and inspecting it.]

...This party's when, again?

[As if he's actually contemplating figuring something else out before they go, when they both know damn well this is pretty likely how he's going to that gala.]

[ the fact spike doesn't appear to be fighting this idea too much provides faye with a deep sense of triumph. of course, his motivation likely stems from whatever share he'll get after bagging this bounty. she knows he wouldn't just let her run off and do it herself—she'd keep the reward all to herself in that case. they all know that. ]

It starts in like an hour and a half. Luckily, we're not docked too far from it but we'll need to make haste if we want eyes and a decent proximity on the guy. He's got very deep pockets so chances are he's paid for a number of bodyguards.

[ faye is ready. except for one last detail: the pistol she straps in a holster to her thigh, hidden by the flow and length of her dress. ]

[One with a bunch of guys he could be beating up, but shouldn't. Rude, frankly. But that's how the job goes sometimes.]

And you're sure you're not walking right into some kind of trap?

[He's not sure she isn't, but that's alright. He's prepared. He's always prepared.]

This gala isn't open to the public. That's why I nabbed an invite.

[ faye grabs the clutch she plans to take with her that houses miscellaneous items but most importantly the invitation. she slips it out and shows it to spike, gauging his reaction while he looks it over. ]

There's no way they're expecting anyone other than their esteemed guests.

Especially not a couple of bounty hunters.

[ she watches him study it a little longer until—her attention drifts and... she's staring at his hair? ]

Nothing about what you've just said tells me whether or not it's a trap, you know.

[It's fine. He's got it— and he's looking over the invitation when he notices she's looking at him especially hard.]

You're paranoid.

[ faye quickly retorts before the focus resumes to that wild head of hair. she steps up to him and reaches out, tentative, though not quite touching just yet. ]

And yeah, your hair, we need to fix it. May I?

My hair...?

[A quirk of the brow, because Spike isn't entirely sure, but he leans forward just a touch out of curiosity. And yet;]

What's wrong with my hair?

Nothing, it's just—

[ when spike leans forward, that gives faye the OK to touch his hair—and so she does, carefully, for the first time ever.

... and it's surprisingly soft! she kind of spends a second too long brushing her hand over it before finally pulling away. ]

We need to slick your hair back.

It'll look good, I promise.

[ promise. ♡ ]

[Spike scowls, lips out in a pout, but he lets her do what she wants, anyway. Fighting with her would only waste more of their time, and then it'll be an argument about leaving twenty minutes ago, and then—]

Ugh.

Never knew you were such a stickler for details.

[ she's so used to that scowl of his that it doesn't even faze her as she walks off, once more, to fetch a small jar of gel and a comb. when she returns, she immediately grabs his wrist and leads him to the bathroom. ]

I just can't let you leave with your hair looking the way it does. Not while you're wearing a nice suit like that.

[ once they're both standing face-to-face, faye turns the faucet on and runs the comb underneath. ]

Do you want me to do the honors, or should you? We need to wet your hair and comb it down before I apply the gel.

[ she tells him like he's never done it before—and she assumes as much! ]

[Somehow, he feels like if he does it... she's just going to want to fix it, anyway. And yet, he still takes the comb from her, scowling. This will undoubtedly make everything take longer, aaaaand he still bumps her just a bit to the side with his hip for a better view in the mirror.]

I know how to use a comb,

[He mutters, but with hair that thick he still has to wet his hand to course it through as well. As Spike stares into the mirror, he grimaces all the same; it's still been a minute, and he just knows she's going to have something to say while he bumps the faucet closed with his elbow and starts sliding that comb through his fairly neglected tresses.]

[ the bump to the side earns him a small little 'hey!' under her breath, but since she's been forced to move, faye turns to watch him from the side. hopefully he doesn't catch the look she gives him—a single brow very distinctly arched in disbelief. ]

You sure about that?

[ faye hates to say it ( does she? ) but those tresses are definitely neglected. still, she stands by and watches him, enduring the awkward silence that overtakes while he wets and combs back his hair. there's a subtle grimace on her face whenever the comb catches. ]

Geez. Be a little more gentle.

[ as if he's brushing her hair or something??? anyway! she's preparing a small glob of gel for when he's ready. ]

[gripes Spike as he continues, but eventually water and comb tease all those tangles free and glide through with a bit more ease.

Ugh. He already hates this look, which at least speaks to its usefulness as a disguise (that he, again, will assert he does Not need).]
