[ seeing space from inside the ship is beautiful. beautiful and endless and jim can never, ever get enough of it. he wasn't built to settle on the ground, he knows that now, and so does everyone else.

but there are moments of quiet when they're on the ground, new planets, first contact, and all things no one in the federation has seen before, where jim thinks he can understand why some people like the little pockets of existence.

like now, on hautex ii, part of a binary star system with irregularly alternating sunrises and sunsets. they're to stay on-planet for about a week to really get things settled with the locals and for now instead of feeling antsy jim's just... comfortable. comfortable sitting on the railing of the balcony of the room they've been put up in for the duration, looking out at the rising dual suns.

jim didn't sleep much, but that feels inconsequential and unimportant right now. this is the closest he'll ever be to settling down, he thinks, and that's alright by him. ]
