Life is hard. You can go through rough patches and over bumps, and sometimes it feels as though you're definitely worse for the wear, both physically and mentally. It's nice to have someone - someone more than a friend - there for you in those times...even if you don't think you want them or deserve them. But they're here, and they'll take care of you.

How to Play:
* This is a shipping meme for more tender, soft moments, but a little more serious than your usual "fluff." It's for people who've been broken down by their experience and those who wish to heal them.
* Comment with your character/your preferences. You may also want to specify whether your character will be the one "cared for" or the one doing the "caring" + pertinent information, but for most effectiveness, it's best to be open to both.
* Comment around.

1. Know You've Been Hurt By Someone Else: There are scars left on their heart from a past relationship or fling, and you have to let them know you're not the same way.
2. Can Tell By the Way You Carry Yourself: The person you have feelings for is one of those "cold stone wall" types who pushes people away. Can you get past that?
3. I've Asked About You: You've only heard bad things about this person, but you don't believe it.
4. What's a Life with No Fun: Lighten up a bit! You'd do anything to bring a smile to their face.

[After a moment, she looks up and smiles at him, managing fairly well to make it convincing. She tugs on him slightly and gets them heading into the house, pointing him towards the kitchen.]

Go sit down, I'll get the clippers.

[That distance. He can sense it. Smell it. His nostrils flare. Tonight. Tonight when she's asleep he'll run. Return. She's safe now.

He hits his head on the doorframe, coming up. His licks the light blood off his hands before his lip trembles]

I hurt my head.

[She winces in sympathy as they move through the door the rest of the way.]

I've got peroxide, it's ok. We'll take care of it.

[She pointed him to the kitchen, while she headed towards the bathroom on this level. She comes back a moment later with a comb, scissors, a bag of cotton balls and hydrogen peroxide.]

[He's stripped out of his ruined shirt. Thankfully his pants are still intact but there's hair along his back and along his bulging arms too without it. He is sitting however, very patiently. He should be able to go to someone professional. She shouldn't have to do this. To be scared like this...

Can he smell her fear? The way he smelled the fear of others? that was what turned him he was sure of it....

He shook it away and swallowed the saliva down. The moment she touches him he'd lean into it with a contented purr.]

[Fear was only lingering, the trace remains of the adrenaline that was recently rolling off her in droves.

She rubs his neck, a touch of contact before setting to work on his hair, chattering as she goes, to fill the air with something.]

My mom used to cut my brothers hair in the kitchen like this.

[He leans into her touch again. She might notice there are two ridges on the top of his head, bumps.]

...Probably kill me if they found out about me huh?

[Her hands falter and stop. She hadn't even thought about her family. Her brothers, her mom.

It takes her a half second before she starts again, brushing and snipping.]

I-I don't know.

[silence again. He's looking a little more presentable.]

...I didn't mean to do it.

[She brushes the cut hair from his shoulders, perhaps a moment longer then was strictly necessary before pausing and turning away to get the broom.]

I know.

Do you want to go shave or.. put on a shirt?

[he breathes deep] Do you want me to?

[Her heart picks up a beat as she pauses, but she sweeps his hair together in a pile.]

You could shave... At least enough for me to see you under all that..

[Fluff fur and fuzz where all words that would have fit there, been teasing and playful enough. It was still fresh. To fresh and Reggie stumbled over her sentence.]

hair...

[But she lightened her voice and took a deep breath. And smiled.]

You look like one of those mountain men.

[He smiles, running a hand over his chin.] ....yeah ok. It takes a certain kind of guy to pull off that look and I don't know if it's me.

[He's gone for about ten minutes, twenty minutes. He returns with his hair a little longer, but his face is clean shaven.

...He shrugs sheepishly.]

...Can I keep the shirt off?

[Reggie takes the time to clean up the mess and wash her face, to get herself a Valium and to relax.

She's got a cup of tea in hand and is sitting on a bar-stool, staring off into the back yard by the time Paul comes back. She looks back at him with a soft smile and a tilt of her head, considering the question.]

I don't object if you don't. I like eyecandy sometimes too.

[He flexes an arm that bulges with muscle] ...Yeah?

[She snorts out softly a genuine note of laughter as he flexes and hold out her hand to him.]

Yeah. But I won't go into public with a topless man, just so you know.

...Who says we have to go into public? We could just stay here. I could ...hold your hand.

[He won't say hold her this is a lot to take in.]

I could tell you about the things I saw.

[She figures that maybe he's just not.. in control enough to hold anything but her hand, so she'll settle for what she can get.]

That's true...

Are you sure you'll be alright... talking about it?

[He strokes her fingers] It's not what made me like this. What brought him to me. He was dying, I see that now and he had to move on to another host but there's no place for him anymore.

[his other hand taps on his leg.] The place I was, was this tiny valley filled with flowers, grass. Even in winter it was ... it was warm somehow. Snug. You could hear the animals hearts beating.

[Reggie tugs lightly on his fingers, encouraging him to come closer if he wanted.

She needed his solidarity and to know that at least for right now, things were going to be ok.]

That sounds pretty. So, you get to be like a successor or something to a horrible legacy? What brought him to you?

[She figured that if she understood, it would all be easier to swallow.]

[He moves closer, taking her hand in both of his. He's warm. Generating his own heat. This is so much easier.]

[He keeps his hand on hers.] My father. My mentor. He ...he was misguided. Trying to keep me alive. I had to be punished too.

....I always loved the forest.

[It was cyptic and not that telling, but she was trying. She rubs her thumb over his fingers and knuckles. She was silent for a minute.]

And you're staying out of the forest because of me?

[Oh, he doesn't want to say yes. That's too much to bear. He doesn't want to hurt her, to say those things. Even if they're true. His hands tremble slightly, ever so slightly.]

...You saved me.

How could I not...want to try and save you too?

[Reggie looks up at him.]

Because I'm not instinct.

[Considering his rip and tear, animistic actions, Reggie figured that h'ed be a... a slave to it, in a way and that her, just being a woman that he cares about, not enough to resist against it.]

...I dream. I keep holding onto this dream and it's...you holding me back from this...this abyss and it...

[He doesn't let go of her] He understands what it's like to have a mate.

[What he's said doesn't sink in for a good minute before he realizes it and curls away] ...Oh god. I'm so sorry.

[She catches his fingers, won't allow him to pull away any further then he already has.]

No. It's ok.

[She stands up and tentatively slips an arm around his waist, letting her other hand rest in the center of his chest, where she can feel his heartbeat.

Trying to control her was one thing. She would have her own mind, period. But being his mate wasn't that. It was something different and something that she steps into, generally understanding what it means.]

Just as long as you can keep me safe from yourself.
