We always thought alien life would come from the stars. But it came from deep beneath the sea, a portal between dimensions in the Pacific Ocean. Something out there had discovered us. The first Kaiju made landfall in San Francisco. The second attack hit Manilla. Then the third one hit Cabo. Then we learned this was not going to stop. In order to fight monsters, we created monsters of our own. We needed a new weapon. The Jaeger Program was born. Two pilots, our minds, our memories, we were connected. Man and machine became one.

In the near future, giant monsters identified as "Kaiju" have begun attacking Earth's coastal cities, resulting in a war that takes millions of lives and quickly consumes humanity's resources. To combat the monsters, a special type of weapon is designed: massive robots, known as Jaegers. The Jaegers are controlled simultaneously by two pilots who are bound together in a process called Drifting, creating a neural link between their minds. The link lets them share the mental strain which would otherwise overwhelm a single pilot. The Jaegers are the last, best hope for humanity's survival.

Instructions:
1.Choose a role (or multiple roles!) and post with your character/fandom.
2. Others will post to you with a scenario.
3. All Jaeger names must made up of two words that have little to do with each other. This is mandatory.
4. Go big or go extinct. Or just have fun, that works too.

Roles:

1. Jaeger Pilot: The rock stars of the kaiju wars. You and your partner may be siblings, spouses, parent and child, or just two people who have the trust and compatability necessary for a successful Drift. Get out there and kick some ass.

2. Engineer: The war against the kaiju isn't just fought by the pilots. You're one of the countless support staff that design, repair, and enhance the Jaegers for maximum kaiju-smashing potential.

3. Scientist: Biologist, physicist, kaiju groupie. You study these horrific monsters so you can figure out how to destroy them...or you just really have a thing for alien anatomy.

4. Mission Control: Off the front lines but not out of the battle. You're watching the monitors, dealing out the orders, and generally making sure your Jaeger pilots don't do anything more stupid than normal.

5. Civilian: A black market dealer in kaiju organs, a reporter trying to get a (literally) big scoop, or just some poor schmuck trying not to get stepped on. You're one of the folks that the Jaegers are fighting for.

6. Other: Go wild.

Scenarios:

1. Preparations: Dealing with kaiju is a process, not a moment. Pilots need to physically and mentally hone their strength, engineers need to perfect the Jaeger weaponry and armor, scientists need to run their experiments, and black market dealers need to make their money.

2. First Neural Handshake: It's time to Drift with your partner. You'll experience each others' most painful secrets, joyous memories, and the time you got drunk and made out with the captain of the football team. Hang on, it'll be a bumpy ride.

3. Downtime: Chill out, have a beer, pretend the world isn't ending. You can explore the thriving towns that have grown up amongst the kaiju remains or just stay in the Shatterdome doing combat practice. However you relax, you've earned it.

4. Kaiju Detected: Battle stations, folks. Get to your cockpit, your command post, or your underground bunker. The monsters are coming, and they ain't gonna stop until someone does something about them.

5. Combat Mode: It's go time! You're in the heat of things, punching these otherworldly abominations in the face with your awesome. Remember to call your attacks; it makes them more powerful if you shout their names first.

5. Aftermath: Job well done, folks. Sit back, enjoy the celebrations, put another tick mark on your kill count...and if necessary, mourn the dead.

6. Other: Go further wild.

[A Jaeger-filled world must, by definition, include Jaeger groupies. Andrew Carter's never been in the running for pilot candidacy, but he's okay with that. His real dream has been to work on the giant robots themselves, elegantly crafting more powerful weaponry and stronger armor. He has promotional pictures of Striker Eureka and Crimson Typhoon on the inside of his locker where other people have pin-ups, and he's memorized the stats of every Jaeger currently or formerly in existence. One of his most precious possessions is a chunk of helmet armor that was taken off Tacit Ronin during repairs. You want a chain sword that shoots lasers? Carter will find a way to make a chain sword that shoots lasers.]

You know what's really frustrating? Being completely fascinated with a thing that you are not allowed to fully experience or investigate.

The discovery and creation of actual artificial intelligence is a step forward for science so gigantic that it can't really be put into words, and it has been slowly driving Filly mad that she can't get to talk to the jaegers.

She's actually talked to the big machines about it during the long hours of maintenance work, and have quietly wondered if they've heard.

Now, at last, she is about to risk everything just for a chance to do it once because guess who's managed to hack her way into LOCCENT? You got it, it's Filly. She knows she will most likely get put away for it for a very, very long time, but it's a risk she's willing to take.

She can sadly only communicate via text, but it's at least a start.

Gipsy has for some reason always been the jaeger she's enjoyed working on the most, and so it is Gispy she tries to contact.

It's after one of those successful drops back in the glory days, when the pilots could go get roaring drunk afterwards because there were months between kaiju attacks and no one really worried about war clocks or what the future was gonna bring.

They'd bagged another kill; father and son, another name that Chuck couldn't remember at the moment because he was so goddamn drunk he couldn't see straight, and he didn't care anyway. It was a number, another stamp to the armor, another etching to the leather jacket he wore. A kaiju is a kaiju, he'd tell you, another kill to add to his already growing number, but he'd be lying if he told you he didn't remember every damn one of them when he was sober.

He's leaning on the bar and trying his damnedest to get laid, but it's not working, and god knows what he's even said but the next thing he knows he's getting popped in the jaw, then it's on.

Assistance would be appreciated, even in the form of his father.

[No, he's not a baby kaiju. Or a half-breed kaiju. Or a mutant. He's a perfectly reasonable scientist who happens to have an unusual look to him for reasons completely devoid of kaiju matters and he'd be very grateful if you'd stop asking awkward questions so he can go back to his work. Abe's used to the stares by now and shaming people into silence seems to be the best way to get a little peace...he doesn't need to tell them that his condition also renders him mostly immune to the effects of Kaiju Blue.]

[Helena was on one of many scientists who was working on the clean up detail. Her work had less to do with how to get rid of it and more about what it could do. it wasn't exactly sanctioned either, but no one was denying help from a woman with her credentials who was willing to risk her life to help.

She was dressed in the specialized waders that they were using to move around the muck. Old blue stains turned the orange plastic material into dye below her waist. She'd already taken of the top half, her black tank top showing off pale skin and long arms, suspenders holding up the oversized bottoms. She went over to what had to be the second oddest looking man she'd ever seen. Her faced gave away none of her reaction to him, but it hid mostly intrigue.

It had taken some work to get herself in a position where she could bump into him and she wasn't going to let it pass.]

[Vladik is a neurologist working with the Pons System, enhancing it and ensuring it is safe for both pilots. While his own encounters with Drifting have been brief and detached from Jaeger control systems, generally used to test the latest version of the technology, his mild psychic abilities have given him a slight edge in determining their mechanism. He can't quite Drift, but it's the barest edge of Drifting. A sensation of another mind's activity that lets him know if the Drift is a success before the systems have time to calibrate brain activity. It's quite useful, in a stupid little way.]

Sousuke Sagara || Full Metal Panic!

[ Though young for the position, Sousuke is a pilot-to-be - a rough upbringing in the Middle East has seen him more than combat-ready, and it turns out his body is just as suited for combat in a Jaeger as it is outside of one. His mind, however, is something of a different story. One of the greatest disadvantages of his battlefield upbringing is a difficulty in connecting to people, and he seems to have some trouble initiating a successful neural handshake. Though he shows promise, time is a factor in the war against the kaijus - humanity needs pilots now, and they can't afford to wait much longer. If Sousuke can't succeed in drifting with his next chosen partner, he may lose this chance forever. ]

[ As it turns out, Baird is exactly the kind of engineer this war needs. As the frequency of kaiju attacks increases there's less and less time between battles to gather materials and perform repairs. There's a lot of improvising required when it comes to reassembling entire robotic limbs after they're ripped off somewhere in the Pacific, and turning scraps into success is what he does best.

Not that he won't complain constantly about his work conditions, but he'll get shit done. ]

Tyrell Badd | Ace Attorney

[Tyrell Badd is one of the pilots on the Mark-2 Jaeger Lightning Raven, stationed at the Los Angeles Shatterdome. Despite the flighty name the Jaeger is quite the bruiser, recognizable by the three sharp 'wings' protruding from its back. He's one of the oldest pilots around and his Jaeger's getting up there too, but age hasn't dimmed his skills. He holds one of the highest kill counts on the California coast line and has no intention of stopping.]

[Sometimes Kili feels as if they were born to pilot a Jaeger. It's not something he says aloud often, because even now with Jaeger pilots being such celebrities it's a hot topic. Still, there's something harmonious in the way they meld together, chasing thought and memory playfully as they drift and spend hours patrolling the stretch of coasts between Dome and city. It's the worst part of the job, boring and tedious and half the time they end up bickering with themselves and the Comm just for the hell of it. Likely, it's the best part of their handler's day -- or at least the boys like to think so. Still, sometimes Fili teases that Kili should have been a scientist instead what with how happy he is to get elbow deep in Kaiju guts.

Never mind the fact that Kili would probably touch all the buttons and all the shiny things and cause an explosion of some sort every half hour.

("You're as much of a fuckin' groupie as some of them, Kili, fess up!" "Oh stuff it, y'know I like it up here better." "Groupiiieeee! Might as well get a Kaiju tattoed across your ass already." "Can't, space is taken up with your fuckin' name, bitch.")

Now though they're in the middle of downtime between the aftermath of a Kaiju and the anticipation of the next attack. It's led to fidgeting and restless practice, fists bloodied and bodies bruised as the brothers pushed themselves to their limits. Fili's stronger than he is, but Kili's faster, more slippery. He dodges and laughs, catches a fist to the face and goes down hard.

Kili spits blood, sweeps Fili's legs out from under him and pins him to the mat, grin wide and red.]

C'mon Fili, thought you were better than that!

[It's kind of a secret among pilots. Some psychologists have latched on to the idea and tried to study it, there's mechanics and techs that swear that Jaegers move in their hangers without anyone around sometimes, but no one really gets what it's like, unless they've been inside the conn pod, hooked up to a pons and inside the Drift. There's no way real way to describe it, people have tried, hell Raleigh's tried but either he's not smart enough to find the right words or they just don't exist.

But if he had to describe it, he would say it's like this: there's a piece missing in your head and it found its way over into your co-pilot's mind and it's never coming back but that's okay because you've got something of theirs in yours.

The first time Raleigh experienced it was in Lima, on leave. It was funny and charming at first and then just downright creepy, how he and Yancy would mirror each other and actually answer questions the other was thinking but not saying. They spent the night staring at each other over a chess board and they never did crown a winner.

This time it's kinda different than that. Their first two Drifts they didn't really have time to take a breather, were always around each other anyway so there was no way to miss her. But after the breach, the two of them were made to stay in the Shatterdome's infirmary overnight. It makes sense, he supposes, since he did technically crash another Jaeger and survived a nuclear blast and there was that whole thing where they're still not sure if the pod was just broken or he was actually dead. But it doesn't mean he likes it. Doesn't mean that lying there in his tiny cot, he doesn't miss her. Doesn't mean that he doesn't reach for her just to touch her only she's not there or that he doesn't open his mouth to say something only to remember that no one can hear him.

Raleigh huffs and gives up after about an hour and a half of that. Wrapped up in his blanket, he leaves his room and heads to the one next door, where he just knows that she is, don't ask how. He knows. He doesn't bother knocking before letting himself in.]
