12, almost 13, a mutant would make the family look bad; happens to a lot of us.

How'd you meet Steve? Want to hear the real stuff, not like whatever they write on museum walls.

I'm sorry to hear that. Seems to happen for a lot of reasons these days. Has anyone figured out how mutated genes started to happen?

He was in an alleyway on the way home from school... putting up a good fight, but not enough for the kids beating on him to try and smash his face into the ground and steal his money. I kicked their asses instead. He was pretty mad about it.

You don't have to be sorry; I mean, if I changed anything, my life wouldn't be what it is, and there's some good shit in it.

Some people think it's just evolution; some people think we've always been here; fairies, skinwalkers, and other myths might have just been mutants; maybe it's a mix of both.

It's still a terrible thing though. But it's great that you're able to see the good in it. That's not an easy thing to do.

Do you think that?

Yeah, he wanted to stand up and do it all on his own. He was stubborn like that. Always acted like he had 'em on the ropes, even when he was seconds away from being pummeled to death. Dragged him out of more fights than I could count.

It took a while; I was angry and, in a really bad way for a while, made some choices I wish I hadn't, but again, I probably wouldn't be talking to you or have the people in my life I do.

Also, if they hate mutants that much, I don't really want to think what it would be like if they hadn't kicked me out.

I think it's evolution; we've been around for a while. Science isn't really my thing, but I know enough to know that it's just an extra bit on the 23rd chromosome or something like that. I don't think like my parents were irradiated or something.

I know a couple of hot heads, too, that need to be pulled out of stuff, but it's nice to have people that have known you that long. It's good he has you; it sounds like he has no problem getting into trouble but a problem getting out of it.

I have, yeah. I grew up near a beach. Used to go there all the time.

The sea? Fresh air. Childhood. Good memories that keep me grounded. Guess it really does mean a lot to me.

How much d'you remember now? Got most of it back, or there still gaps?

How long ago was that?

I remember a lot more now, but there are still gaps. There are moments when I have a hint of a memory but it isn't all there, and I know it's cause my brain is keeping it from me.

Twenty, twenty-five years ago? Dunno exactly. Wasn't really keepin' track of time for a while right at first.

Can you tell the difference between somethin' that got blocked out, and somethin' you just forgot the old fashioned way? Does it feel different?

I don't know. It's really hard to say. Hard to know if one effects the other too. It's frustrating. Even more so cause I've got no one around to help fill in the blanks anymore.

Would you've gone back if you'd had the chance?

Pretty impressive. Where'd you go after that?

Maybe. I don't know. I would've wanted to be with Steve, but he wanted to be with someone else, so I guess third wheeling might've been rough. But also- I've changed too much to live a life back there, I think.

Couldn't really tell you. I hit a lotta different places without ever really stopping. Wasn't sure how far they'd chase me, so I just...kept going. Up 'til we started flyin' out of Earth durin' the Blip, I dunno if I'd ever spent more than a couple weeks in one place on purpose.

That's what I did too- when I escaped. I just kept running, didn't matter where, just had to get away. What did you do during the Blip?

Oh no, I didn't mean like... [He hesitates, then sighs and shakes his head. It's ok now, isn't it?] Yeah, okay. That's what I meant. And no, he never caught on. Or maybe he did and he was just trying to let me down easy.

Runnin' escort on aid shipments. Takin' out dickheads who thought they could fill a power vacuum. High end tech stuff for places that got all their experts Snapped. Just, y'know...tryin' to keep it all from goin' to shit, mostly. Turns out Thanos was kind of a dumbass.
